Dear Jane Ryan Families,

As we wrap up another wonderful week at Jane Ryan, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Flagg for leading our school in celebrating International Dot Day. This special event gave our students the chance to explore their creativity, embrace their individuality, and celebrate the importance of “making their mark.” The hallways and classrooms were filled with vibrant colors, inspiring activities, and joyful energy. Dot Day is always a reminder that every child has unique gifts to share, and Mrs. Flagg’s thoughtful planning and enthusiasm made the day both meaningful and memorable for all.

Looking ahead, we have a busy and exciting week coming up:

  • Tuesday, September 23rd – No School in observance of Rosh Hashanah.

  • Wednesday, September 24th at 7:30 PM – Our PTA Meeting will take place in the Jane Ryan Library. This is a wonderful opportunity to stay engaged, share your voice, and learn more about upcoming school events and initiatives.

  • Saturday, September 27th at 4:00 PM – We invite you to join us for the Father’s Club Back to School BBQ, held in the back of the school. This is always a highlight of our fall calendar, bringing families together to connect, enjoy good food, and strengthen the strong sense of community that makes Jane Ryan so special.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support. We are off to a fantastic start to the school year, and I am confident that the weeks ahead will be filled with even more learning, growth, and shared celebrations.

Warm regards,
Pat Horan

Important Reminder: Walker Policy and Change of Dismissal Procedure:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I want to take a moment to reinforce our expectations regarding student walkers and dismissal procedures. These protocols are in place first and foremost to ensure the safety of all children, as well as to keep our dismissal process orderly and efficient.

Walker Policy

If your child is designated as a walker, this means they are expected to travel between home and school entirely on foot. Please note that it is not permitted to park in the school lot and walk to the front doors to meet your child. Doing so is considered part of the carline procedure, not the walker procedure.

If you are driving to pick up your child, you must remain in your vehicle and follow the established carline. Parking and walking up to the building creates congestion, interrupts traffic flow, and most importantly, compromises student safety. Consistency in how children are dismissed helps us protect every student.

Changes to Dismissal Plans

If you need to adjust your child’s dismissal plan for any reason, all changes must be communicated to the main office no later than 12:00 PM. We understand that emergencies may occasionally arise, but we ask that changes be limited to only those situations that are absolutely necessary. Frequent or last-minute changes disrupt the dismissal process and create unnecessary confusion for staff and students.

Your cooperation is critical in helping us maintain a safe, efficient, and predictable dismissal process for every child at Jane Ryan. Thank you for your attention to these expectations and for your continued partnership in keeping our students safe.

First Lion's Den of the Year:

This week we held our very first Lion’s Den Meeting of the school year—a special moment where the entire Jane Ryan community came together in our first whole-school assembly. It was especially meaningful as we officially welcomed our newest Kindergarten students into the pride, giving them their first experience of what it means to be part of Jane Ryan.

During the assembly, we set clear schoolwide rules and expectations, ensuring that every student understands the importance of respect, responsibility, and safety in all areas of the building. We also revisited the Six Pillars of Jane Ryan Pride, which serve as the foundation of our school culture and guide how we learn, grow, and support one another every day.

This gathering not only set the tone for a successful year ahead, but also reminded us that we are strongest when we come together as one school family—supporting each other and taking pride in who we are.

Dot Day:

Dot Day was such a special way to start this week! All the students came into the school wearing their creative dot shirts, and were welcomed by Mrs. Flagg who hung up a pop up art show throughout the hallways. The kids walked past over 400 unique circle inspired artworks on their way to class! This event has gotten bigger every year and now is even cross curriculum. The students read the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds (who inspired the whole thing), some were writing sentences about dot day in their ela work, and of course they make dot day art. To close the day we all sang The Dot Song by Emily Arrow together as a whole school as an act of community art to demonstrate that we all can be brave enough to make our mark while we are here at Jane Ryan. Thank you to all the parents/guardians who helped their kids get their shirts ready, looking forward to next year already!

Learning Commons News: Learning Commons News:

This week in the library, we’ve been celebrating the creative world of Peter H. Reynolds, the beloved author and illustrator known for his inspiring growth mindset books.

Students in grades K–5 explored a variety of Reynolds’ stories during library class. From The Dot, to Ish, and Sky Color, we were inspired by his messages about creativity, courage, and self-expression.

Collage Creations: After reading Ish, children created their own collages, embracing the beauty of imperfection. We also used our imaginations to design Make Your Mark collages—just like illustrators! 4th and 5th Grade Role Play: Older children read Going Places and If Things Go Right, Go Left, then participated in role-playing scenarios that encouraged creative problem solving and thinking outside the box.

Dewey Crew Reminder – 5th Grade Only: Applications for the Dewey Crew, (our 5th-grade library helpers) are still open! If you're interested in helping out in the library, please submit your application to Mrs. Z by September 30, 2025.

Stay creative and keep reading!

Mrs. Z

Attention 5th Grade Parents:

Dear Parents,

The Trumbull Public Schools will be offering the option for parents to purchase Chromebook Insurance for grades 5-8 students as part of our 1:1 Device Insurance Program. Each student in grades 5-8 is issued a district managed Chromebook that is to be used as a tool to support their learning. Students are responsible for bringing their Chromebook from home to school each day and it is expected to be fully charged and available when needed during the school day. The 1:1 Device Insurance Program is designed to protect students and families in the event that the Chromebook issued to a student is stolen, damaged, or malfunctions due to no fault of the student. Students and parents may be charged for any damage resulting from intentional damage to the device caused by the student or for lost devices.

This program covers all accidental damage to the Chromebook or theft of the device subject to the following: $0 deductible for the first two occurrences per year and $50 deductible per occurrence thereafter. This coverage is effective for the duration of the school year. Insurance must be renewed annually.

The cost for the 2025-2026 school year is $25.00 per device, per child. If a family does not elect to purchase the insurance, the family will be responsible for the full cost of replacement parts plus labor or full replacement cost of the Chromebook if it can not be repaired. A typical repair for a screen replacement is approximately $85, which is why the district encourages parents to purchase the insurance to limit their liability in case of accidental damage to the device. Chromebook insurance does not cover intentional damage or lost devices, chargers or cases.

For additional information on the program please refer to Board of Education 5143.2 Student One-to-One Device Insurance Program. Families experiencing economic hardship may request a fee waiver by contacting the appropriate school administrator and following the process outlined in Board of Education 5138/Pay to Participate Policy.

Enrollment and payment for the 1:1 Device Insurance Program will be processed via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. To purchase the insurance login to the Parent Portal, and select School Store>Technology>Chromebook Insurance on the left menu. Click here to access step-by-step instructions for adding the insurance and completing payment online.

Parents must elect the insurance no later than 9/30/2025.

Volunteering in School:

As we move closer to the fall, please take the time to fill out the TPS volunteer form for the 2025-2026 school year. No person whose name is listed on the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, or who is registered as a sex offender under state or federal law may, volunteer in any District schools. Failure to provide complete or provide accurate information on this “School Volunteer Security Check” form will disqualify an individual from volunteering in any District school. A volunteer is defined as an individual, other than an employee, who works with the students at any of the Trumbull Public Schools.

Room Parents Wanted:

"Are you interested in an opportunity to get involved at Jane Ryan? Look into being a room parent! It’s a great way to get to know the school, the staff, the students, and other parents. What does a room parent do?

Room parent responsibilities include:

  • provide classroom opportunities outside of school for student and parents community building (ex. playdates)
  • communicate with classroom teacher
  • streamline communication with parents for the teacher for school events/classroom needs
  • coordinate with other grade level room parents for party planning/activities
  • organize activities and volunteer as needed or find volunteers for any in-school parties

If you’re not able to attend but want to volunteer, or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself, Liz Juselis (lizmjuselis@gmail.com) or Missy Dorsey (missydorsey@hotmail.com)"
