School Wide Positive Intervention Behavior Supports (SW-PIBS)

SW-PBIS is a way for us to TEACH students positive behavior similar to what we do in reading and in math. In each area of the school, we have expectations because, at Mallinson Elementary, our Cardinals are:

  • Safe
  • Respectful
  • Responsible

Anywhere a student goes, whether in the classroom, on the playground, or on the bus, we ask students to have this positive behavior:

Keep all hands, feet, and other objects to yourself (KAHFOOTY)

Use appropriate voice level

Follow directions

Walk purposefully to destination

Keep school neat and clean

Use materials as instructed

You can help us by asking your child not only what they learned today, but also how your child behaved. Was your child safe, respectful and responsible?

October Specials October Specials

From Art- Mrs. Vance

The school year is off to a great start in the art room!

5th Graders are working on Japanese Carp Kites. Students are learning about simulated texture--texture made to LOOK like it is real--by drawing scales on their fish. They recently made and finished the cardinal masks used in the ISD Parade. The masks had real or actual texture from tearing up small pieces of paper to create a mosaic style appearance.

4th Graders have just finished up studying the artists Pablo Picasso and Henri Mattise. Their next project is going to be a Christmas project using tints and shades...yes a Christmas project this early!! Fourth graders in the Independence School District all participate in an art contest for the Mayor’s Christmas Program. The winning entry must be submitted in October, so we are getting a head start. Best of luck to all my 4th grade artists!

3rd Graders are currently working on using symmetry making a 3D stuffed owl. Students have also finished up their beautiful blended oil pastel toucan drawings.

2nd Graders are currently working on their MAD Scientist projects by mixing the primary colors to make secondary colors. They have drawn science beakers and have mixed the colors together to create new ones. October will bring some exciting Halloween or Fall projects.

From Music- Ms. Clark

Hello Mallinson Families! We are doing some amazing things in music class this month. We have just recently started playing ukuleles in 5th grade (which is incredible!), 4th graders have experimented with online music games, 3rd grade is starting to learn patriotic songs for our Veteran’s Day program on Thursday, November 10th (more info will come out later!), and our 2nd graders are having a blast experiencing instruments and stories together to make them more interesting. We are so excited to learn new things and play new, fun games to help us experience music to the fullest! We can’t wait to tell you more about it. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me at Emily_Clark@isdschools.org Thanks for your support!

From PE- Coach Ross

Hello again Mallinson Parents!

In Physical Education this month, your students are working very hard learning about several muscles and what is meant by “the full range of motion” of their muscles! We are currently exercising our muscles by doing a variety of exercise stations such as push-ups, mountain climbers, wall sits and many more. So, if your student comes home with sore muscles, please know that your students are working hard everyday building strength, endurance and flexibility in their muscles to prepare for the state mandated physical fitness examine! We appreciate your support as always! Have a Blessed day!

Coach Ross

Students in 4th and 5th grade ran for classroom representative positions in Student Council. Those running gave speeches to their grade levels about how they are safe, respectful and responsible. Their classmates listened to the speeches and voted for who they wanted to represent their classroom. The members of Mallinson Student Council will be involved in various service projects throughout the year. They will also serve as role models to younger students on how to behave safely, responsibly and respectfully at school.

Second and third grade classes had classroom guidance lessons on personal/social topics. 2nd graders learned about ways to be a good friend and 3rd graders learned about having a positive sense of self esteem.

As always, if you need anything, please contact me at Mallinson 816-521-5530.

Weekly Attendance video

From IMPACT- High Achiever or Gifted?

Sometimes it is hard to distinguish a student who is a high achiever from one who is gifted. While it is true that gifted students can also appear to be high achievers, often the student who is truly a high achiever is doing a wonderful job in class and does not need support outside of the classroom environment.

The first question a teacher or parent needs to ask is, “How much effort is the student putting into his/her work?” High achievers have an admirable work ethic that allows them to finish their classwork (sometimes even ahead of time) and they also turn in quality work. A gifted student often does not have to put much effort into his/her work because most of it comes so easily to him/her.

Many gifted students (not all) have unique traits that set them apart from other students. They often see themselves as equals with adults, can be difficult if they don’t agree, strong willed, they may think they know more than the teacher or parent, they don’t always have to apply themselves, they may ask annoying questions or challenge the teacher and can appear to be arrogant.

Remember that not all gifted students display these traits. None of them fit into a “gifted mold”. If you have a child or student that displays many of these characteristics – you may want to consider referring that child for IMPACT testing in the spring. Be sure to talk to the counselor or the student’s classroom teacher about the possibility.
