This week at Coulston

IREAD Testing March 4-14

Our 2nd and 3rd grade students did a great job with IREAD testing this week. We still have a few make-up tests to administer next week. We should have the test results back in early April. We will send those reports home as soon as they are released. Thanks for helping your child and school prepare for IREAD!!

Spring Break

Just a reminder that Spring Break begins on Friday, March 15(No School) through March 23. Students will return on Monday, March 25th.

Babe Ruth Baseball Registration

Registration for Shelby County Babe Ruth baseball is open for boys and girls (ages 4-13). Deadline to avoid late fee is March 2nd. For more information & registration visit https://bit.ly/scbr2024

Book Fair

Due to renovations, we will be moving our Book Fair to the week of April 1-5. We apologize for the change, but it will be a Spring Fling event! Information for this event will come home this month.

Kickball For Scuffy

We will be celebrating SCUFFY with a district-wide Kickball game this month at SHS. Be on the lookout for more information on how you can come and support your favorite Coulston staff members. GO COMETS!!!

CogAT Testing

Our 5th grade classes completed the CogAT assessment this week. We have a few more assessments to make up this week.

A reminder Cognitive ability refers to a student’s readiness to learn in different situations and environments and demonstrate creative problem-solving skills. Unlike a traditional achievement test, which measures how well a student has mastered the curriculum, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) shows us how well a child can reason abstractly and identify patterns and relationships in the world around them. The CogAT measures reasoning in three areas, also called batteries, that are based on the most important ways students and teachers communicate in the classroom: Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative.

This assessment will assist in identifying high ability students in each grade level.

Report Cards

Report Cards will come home with students on Thursday, March 14th. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher.

Transportation Reminder-Please Read

We are asking that any requests for a transportation change be submitted to the office no later than 1:30 pm daily. A reminder that requests must be consistent throughout the week, meaning that the pick-up and/or drop off address remains the same all week. Also please know that once a student has been put on the bus in the afternoon, we are not able to remove them to go to the car rider line. This process delays our buses from departing school on time to run their elementary route and arrive on time for their secondary route. If your child needs to be a car rider for that day, please call the office and inform the office before 1:30 and make sure that your child has a car rider tag. It is also important you call the office for ANY changes to transportation and not the classroom teachers, this includes walkers and car riders. Fridays have also become a heavy end of the day pick-up in the office. If you could please pick your child up in the car rider line, that will help eliminate the high volume in the office. If you require an additional car rider tag, please call the office and we can provide it for you. Thanks in advance for your understanding and assistance with transportation.

Pruebas CogAT

Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention month in April

The elementary schools at SCS will be recognizing Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention month in April

this year. It’s important to spend time talking about Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention for all of our students, as well as letting families know about the events taking place at school!

As you may recall, in the fall semester, students received the Think First and Stay Safe: Child Lures training

as a way to promote body safety and smart choices in their community. During the month of April, we use the

time to reflect on why making smart and safe choices is important, as well as why feeling safe in your

community is an essential part of Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention. In coordinating activities, our

school has partnered with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to provide these special events to

help students understand safety at home, at school, and in their community:

● Students in grade K-2 will read the story, Do You Have a Secret?, to help them understand the

difference between secrets that are okay and not okay. Students in 2nd grade will receive a copy of

the book to take home.

● Students in grades 3-5 will hear the story of how the pinwheel reminds us that childhood should be

safe and fun for children. They will color a picture of a pinwheel which will be displayed in the halls

of the school.

● On Wednesday, April 3rd, representatives from various organizations that help children feel safe will

be at school at the beginning of the day to greet students. Organizations that may be here are SPD,

SFD, CASA, Firefly, Youth Assistance Program, etc.

● Also, on Monday, April 1st, we are asking students and staff to wear blue to show their support to

preventing child abuse, this will be a community wide initiative to go blue!

● Lastly, April 11th, ten 4th grade students from Coulston will travel to the courthouse to participate in a

community event to recognize Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

We’re excited to partner with organizations in our community to promote safety for children as well as to

reinforce the importance of child abuse awareness and prevention. We hope you and your child(ren) find the

program helpful. If you have questions or would like to opt your student out of the grade level lessons, please

contact me.

Best Wishes,
