Special Education Grant Info Special Education Grant Info

The Parent-Directed Special Education Services (PDSES) grant is an incredible opportunity for families of eligible students with disabilities to receive financial assistance for supplemental special education services. Offered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), this program helps parents take an active role in their child’s education by providing funds to access additional resources tailored to their child’s unique learning needs.

Through the PDSES grant, families can receive up to $1,500 per eligible student to use toward a variety of educational supports, including tutoring, therapy, instructional materials, and other specialized services. These funds are designed to enhance learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom, helping students with disabilities thrive.

To qualify, students must be enrolled in a Texas public school and have a current individualized education program (IEP). The application process is straightforward, and families can find more details, including eligibility requirements and how to apply, on the TEA website.

This grant is a valuable resource for families looking to provide additional support for their children. If you or someone you know could benefit from the PDSES grant, we encourage you to explore this opportunity and take advantage of the funding available.

For more information, visit TEA's official website or contact your school’s special education department.

Adrian Bernal Adrian Bernal

My name is Adrian Bernal, and my mother is Alma Rocha. I have five siblings who attend Meridian ISD, and I have spent most of my education here at MISD.

After high school, I plan to work for an irrigation company while continuing to live in the Meridian area. My goal is to develop the necessary skills in the field so that I can advance and work with other companies in the future.

One teacher who has had a significant impact on my education is Ms. Dunn. She has always been a great supporter of mine and continues to encourage me, even though I no longer have her as a teacher. She has always been willing to help with anything I needed, and I truly appreciate her guidance.

Throughout high school, my friends have been a big source of support, especially my classmates Matty Jones and Mackenzie Borhofen. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.

This year, I learned valuable lessons in Mr. Pitman’s class, where he taught me how to weld and operate a plasma cutter—skills that I know will benefit me in the future.

Joshua Law Joshua Law

My name is Joshua Law, and I am part of the Meridian High School Class of 2025. I live with my dad, and my older brother lives in Houston. One of my favorite high school memories is learning how to weld in shop class.

After graduation, I plan to attend Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Waco to train as a lineman. This career will involve working with power lines and high-voltage electricity—an essential and rewarding job that keeps communities connected.

My favorite teacher this year is Mr. Pittman. He treats all of us as equals and makes an effort to teach us something useful every day. He genuinely cares about his students and wants the best for us—plus, he’s pretty hilarious. My advice to younger students is to treat everyone with kindness and expect nothing in return. Stand up for others when they have no one to speak for them.

I have quite a few hobbies, but my favorites are fishing, hunting, working on engines, baking bread, and fossil hunting. My favorite type of fishing is ultralight fishing in small creeks. When hunting, I typically go for doves, pigs, whitetail deer, and coyotes. Right now, I’m working on a 2004 F-150 that was given to me. In the past, I’ve rebuilt dirt bikes, outboard motors, minibikes, and even a John Deere 5210 tractor.

Shop class is the best part of my day. We learn practical skills like welding, measuring and cutting metal, and using tools properly. Beyond that, we pick up random but valuable skills—like wiring plugs, repairing air lines, and building trailers. The atmosphere is great, and we’re not afraid to call each other out if someone is doing something unsafe.

One of my main goals this year is to maintain an A average. In past years, I didn’t care much about my grades or GPA—I just wanted to pass. But after working hard, I’ve raised my GPA to a 3.5. It may not be extraordinary, but I’m proud of it. A key lesson I’ve learned is not to judge too quickly. First impressions are important, but one meeting doesn’t define a person. Now that I’ve been in Meridian for over a year, my view of people has changed drastically.

Another lesson I’ve learned is to be kind to teachers. They already deal with a lot, and there’s no reason to make their job harder. Sure, you might think it’s fun to mess around, but eventually, you’ll realize you were wrong. Mr. Pittman has had the biggest impact on me this year. He looks out for us, treats us fairly, and teaches us real-world skills. He’s always willing to help and offers solutions when we have a problem. He’s a great teacher, and I wish I could have him for longer.

Lastly, my good friend Thomas has influenced me a lot this past year, and my girlfriend has helped me become a kinder and more open person.

Journey Stauffer Journey Stauffer

Journey Stauffer has been a student at Meridian High School since kindergarten, where she has created lasting memories and friendships. She is the daughter of Shawn Stauffer and Rachel Walker and the youngest of five siblings.

One of her favorite high school memories is a trip to a haunted house with her cross country team, where Afton’s unexpected encounter with a clown nearly got them kicked out.

Journey is a dedicated athlete, actively participating in basketball, volleyball, softball, track, cross country, and tennis. In addition to her involvement in sports, she is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a junior volunteer firefighter. She plans to pursue a career in nursing and is considering both the military and college as pathways to becoming a travel nurse.

She expresses deep gratitude for all of her teachers and coaches, especially Mr. and Mrs. Coach Schur, who have had a tremendous influence on her life. She appreciates their dedication to the students at Meridian and values the support, advice, and laughter they have provided.

Sports have always been a significant part of Journey’s life, dating back to childhood when her family would have "Softball Sundays" and basketball games at the park. One of her most cherished experiences has been playing alongside her sister, Canyon, for most of her life.

Journey is also incredibly thankful for her classmates, many of whom have been together since kindergarten. Watching each other grow up has been a special experience, and as graduation approaches, she knows she will miss the close bonds they have formed. The Class of 2025 has often been described as feeling like a family, a testament to the strong connections they share. Journey feels truly blessed to be part of such a remarkable class.

At Meridian High School, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive—not just in the classroom, but in every aspect of their lives. For many, school provides a consistent source of nourishment, but weekends can present challenges for those facing food insecurity. Thanks to the generosity and compassion of the Meridian Ministerial Alliance, our students in need have access to food over the weekend, ensuring they return to school on Monday ready to learn and succeed.

The Meridian Ministerial Alliance has demonstrated a true commitment to serving our community, working tirelessly to provide essential resources for our students. Their efforts go beyond simply providing meals—they offer hope, kindness, and a reminder that our town stands together in support of one another. Through their dedication, students who might otherwise go without have the security of knowing that they will have food to sustain them through the weekend.

We are deeply grateful for the Alliance’s unwavering generosity, their time, and their hearts for service. Their work makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and their families, reinforcing the values of compassion and community that make Meridian such a special place.

On behalf of Meridian High School, our staff, and the students who benefit from this incredible program, thank you for all that you do. Your kindness does not go unnoticed, and your impact is felt far beyond the meals you provide.
