Message from Dr. Antonelli
Dear Norwood Families,
Welcome back to a brand-new school year! We hope you had a fun and relaxing summer filled with family, fun, and learning adventures. We are excited to welcome our students back to school and are looking forward to an amazing 2025-2026 school year together!
As we begin this year, our focus remains on creating a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. We have several main goals this year that we want to achieve with you, our school families, as partners:
🎯 1. Strong Attendance, Every Day Matters
We are setting a school-wide goal for 90% or better daily attendance. When students are present, they can participate in class, build routines, and stay connected with their teachers and peers. Every day counts toward your child’s success, and we’re here to support families in making consistent attendance a priority.
📚 2. Every Student On Track for Learning
We are committed to ensuring every student is on track in reading and math by the end of the school year. Through high-quality instruction, small group supports, and regular progress monitoring, we will work hard to meet students where they are and help them grow. Students will continue to utilize their My Path for their personalized learning as part of small group work in the classroom and beyond. High quality instruction materials will be utilized for every subject. Students will be engaged in their learning through, questioning strategies, student discourse, student data chats and goal setting, student voice and hands on activities.
🥬3. Edible Gardens / Hydroponic Garden
We are excited to expand our Outdoor Learning Space with the creation of edible garden beds. Each grade will be responsible for a garden bed. We have also purchased a Hydroponic Garden which students will use to grow and harvest food indoors.
🌐4. Student Leadership and Extended Opportunities
We plan to continue and expand our student leadership opportunities. Students have opportunities to have their voices heard, be part of the decision making process for the school and help out their peers through student council, safety patrol and recess rocks junior coaches. This year we will be working with the Rhode Island School Recycling Project (RISRP) and recruiting Recycling Rangers to assist with recycling and improving our food waste. Afterschool and enrichment programs will continue to be offered and students will continue to access our 21st century innovative learning space to prepare them for the future and beyond.
As we prepare to welcome your students back to school, we want to ensure that arrival and dismissal are safe, smooth, and efficient for everyone. Below are important procedures and reminders for student drop-off and pick-up at Norwood School.

What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronic Absenteeism is a measure of how many students miss a defined number of school days for any reason. Rhode Island defines Chronic Absenteeism as the percentage of students who miss 10% or more school days during the year (or 2 days per month).
Research shows that chronic absenteeism is associated with a number of negative consequences for students, including lower achievement, disengagement from school, course failure, and increased risk of dropping out.
Attendance Matters at Norwood School!
Early Dismissals
Please refrain from requesting an early dismissal for your child after 2:45 pm. The dismissal process begins at 3:05 pm and it becomes very difficult for us to fill an early dismissal request once the process begins.
Student Absences
Students will be marked absent, no matter the reason, if they are not in school.
If the absence is due to illness please supply a doctor's note to have the absence labeled as an excused absence.
STUDENT ABSENCE CALL-IN PROCEDURE
In accordance with Rhode Island State Law #16-19-10, Notification of Pupil Absence, the Warwick School Department requires that all parents/guardians call their child’s elementary school on the day that he/she will not be in attendance. We would like to receive all calls by 9:15 in the morning. If you are aware of a pending absence, feel free to call at any time prior to the day of the absence. In the event we do not hear from you, an automated call will be sent at 10:00 a.m. to inform you that your child did not arrive at school.
ASPEN Family Portal
It is important that the Aspen Family Portal is updated with correct address and contact information. Students can only be released to emergency contacts listed in the Family Portal so please make sure this is updated. You can find more information about the Family Portal on the district website here. Using the WPS Family Portal (PDF) WPS Family Portal (direct link)
