CVU Celebrations
October 20, 2023
Dear CVU Community: Our Campus Supervisors have a small jar of candy on their desk. Anyone is welcome to request a piece, but there is a small price to pay. In this case, the price is way more valuable than the product. The joke, compliment, or trivia (even if slightly forced) creates a tiny, joyful connection. Here are the best jokes, compliments, and trivia they've heard this week:
Joke: What did zero say to eight?
(nice belt)
Compliments: The building is better place with you in it.
Trivia/Riddle: What does the letter T have in common with an island?
(WATER)
Chemistry trivia (shout out to Peter Gilliam for being a chem expert!)
Also, please welcome Kathy LaRose our newest member of our Campus Supervisor/Welcome Desk Team (from left to right: Kathy, Rex, Kevin, Seth)!
From Carly Brown: Wednesday morning, looking from the outdoor classroom back to CVU!
Upcoming Events
10/24 - Beltrami Picture Retake Day
10/27 - End of Snapshot 1
10/31 - Crystal Skull Competition (special schedule)
11/3 - Senior pictures due for Yearbook
11/10-11/12 - Newsies, CVU's Fall Musical
Student Celebrations
From Heidi Beaudry: Ruby and I had a wonderful Friday afternoon creating Halloween decorations for her to take home!
From Carly Brown: Botany students showing off their recent eco-printed napkins. They experimented with different leaves and flowers to see the effects. Thanks to Jess Lemieux (and, ultimately, Mara Gitlin) for the inspiration!!
Chris Hood, Coach
CVU student poets attended Sun Dog Poetry's annual teen writing conference, Share Your Heart, Share the World on Wednesday. Students engaged in workshops with poets from around Vermont, attended a talk by Baron Wormser, and shared their work onstage.

Nichols Core went on a field trip to Isham Family Farm this week. Every student walked away with a pumpkin!
The CyberPatriot team competed in Round 1 of this year's competition yesterday. CyberPatriot is both a competition and a learning experience in which students apply essential cybersecurity concepts to secure networks. We have a great, collaborative team this year! Pictured are Dylan E, Jacob V, Nathan B, Alex F, Will S, and Addison H.
CVU Staff being trained in CPR!
From Cross Country Head Coach Dave Baird: The girls varsity team had a pretty amazing day at the Manhattan College Invitational last weekend. They placed second in the most competitive race (Eastern States Championship), facing teams from all over, including Delaware and California and were 2nd overall out of 137 teams and over 1,000 varsity runners. All seven ran personal bests for 4K. Our scoring five were only 35 seconds apart, the winning team was 38. CVU's 6 and 7 both beat their #6 by 20 places. Pretty amazing team all around! Congrats to Noe Jenni, Estella Laird, Annalise Wood, Alice Kredell, Charlotte Crum, Lydia Donahue and Audrey Nelson!
Also, the boys won the District Championship and the JV girls ran as varsity for that District Championship race and placed 2nd against 11 other varsity teams, missing first by only 10 points. The varsity girls say ROHO (run our hearts out) on three right before every race, and the whole team really does that!
Faculty/Staff Celebrations
Andy Miskavage and Cameron Brownell will be a part of the Solaris Vocal Ensemble's 10th Anniversary Concert at the First Universalist Unitarian Society of Burlington (the church at the top of Church Street.) Hope you can come!
Join Solaris Vocal Ensemble as we kick off our new season and our 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 21st at First Unitarian Universalist Society in downtown Burlington. This concert is free. Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door. In recognition of the difficult times many Vermonters are continuing to experience, all donations collected from this performance will go to VT Flood Response & Recovery Fund. In addition to Solaris, this concert will feature several special guest choirs, including the Aurora Chamber Singers, Bella Voce Women’s Chorus, Counterpoint Vocal Ensemble, the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington Choir and the UVM Catamount Singers. The choirs will perform individual pieces then join together to sing the rousing Mack Wilberg arrangement of “Bound For the Promised Land” as well as an exciting rendition of “May the Circle Be Unbroken” arranged by Solaris’ own James Stewart. Topping off this musical extravaganza will be local favorite, Joe’s Big Band. This 17-piece band’s special blend of American jazz standards will cap off the night of celebration.
Community Celebrations/Notes
It was a very busy and successful Saturday at the 18th Annual Fall CVU Handcrafters Fair! With 150 vendor options and several food trucks, we welcomed over 3,000 shoppers. Hosting an event of this size takes a village and many months of planning. A special thank you goes to Carol Fox for her excellent leadership and vendor organization. Thank you to Laura Howard and Jennifer Morton for their marketing and coordination of helpers. Taylor Craft for making sure the building was functioning and spotless throughout and after the event, and a shout out to Sharon Ogden, Ben Butterfield, and CVU Student, Claud Bigue.
Lastly, we couldn't have done it without our team of awesome CVU Students. From helping vendors set-up and break down, to food runners, 50/50 ticket sellers, greeters, and clean up, we would like to recognize and thank the following student helpers for all their support and smiles during the craft fair:
Addie Nevitt
Ariel Toohey
Linni Goldsmith
Emma Main
Kathryn Lewis
Molly Silvia

Vivian Volzer
Teagan Scruggs

Connecting Youth Seeks Mentors
CVSD’s Connecting Youth (CY) seeks new community members to join our team of mentors for 5th - 12th grade students. This is a meaningful volunteer opportunity to be engaged with your community and truly make a difference in the life of one great kid!
Mentors and mentee pairs meet weekly for about an hour. *We work with mentors' personal/professional schedules*
School year commitment
Mentor training and continual support provided by CVSD mentor coordinators.
Middle school mentors have access to dedicated spaces for cooking, crafting, playing games and developing a friendship.
High school mentors work alongside students to grow their skills and resilience, guide in goal-setting, and even explore possible career paths through new interests and experiences.
If you consider yourself fun, caring and trustworthy, your consistent presence can enhance a young person’s self-confidence, improve their academic performance, prevent substance use, and help them discover new passions. All while enriching your own life.
