Prospective Student Shadowing

In mid-November, we held our annual Shadowing Day where prospective students spent the morning with us touring the campus, participating in hands-on activities, and learning a little about GSSV. The current seniors showed the visiting students around. They assisted them in their classroom activities, which ranged from dissecting to building the tallest tower from paper that would support a can to using imagery to paint a picture from a poem to a Socratic seminar. It was a wonderful day with over 200 students visiting us.

Will it Fly?

STEM juniors took their Gas Laws study to new heights -- literally! STEM juniors built hot air balloons at home to test at school. Before flying the balloons, students measured radius and mass of the balloons. Radius was challenging to measure. From this data, students were able to calculate the balloon's payload by using the balloon's volume (assuming spherical) and the density of cold air displaced versus the density of hot air in the balloon. This gave them a calculated hypothesis of if the balloon would fly. Some hypotheses were supported and some were not. It was a great mix of learning and hands-on fun as the students put their designs to the test.

Student Highlight

This month, we highlight Addy Carney, a Cumberland senior. Addy has had great success in Forensics competitions and below is a bit of her experience in her words.

"My journey with Original Oratory began freshman year when I joined Speech and Debate. Speech and Debate consists of several categories: Impromptu, Humorous and Serious Interpretation, Extemporaneous, and, of course, Original Oratory, to name a few. Each of these categories comes with its own specific guidelines and requirements. Original Oratory, often shortened to OO, is when a student researches, writes, and performs a speech on any topic of his/her choosing within a time span of ten minutes. Writing these speeches and sharing them with others gave me the unique opportunity of sharing my thoughts and voicing my concerns about the world. My first year, I wrote a speech on the unethicality of book banning. I received first at regionals, first at super-regionals, and third at the state championship in my category and class. A love for OO spurred within me, and I was more than excited to return the following season, where I wrote a speech on the mental health crisis in schools across the nation. This speech earned me the first place title at states that year, an incredible feat that I was ecstatic to have accomplished. Last year, after presenting my speech on how the foster care system could be improved, I won another state title. Our team as a whole also received runner-up for our class! OO has traveled with me throughout my entire high school career and has helped me become a better advocate, student, and person. This year, as a senior, I look forward to being the team captain of my Speech team and helping others who also have a love for public speaking."

We look forward to see what Addy writes about her senior year and if she can have a three-peat state title! Either way, we are so proud of her.

12 Days of Holiday Fun

The end of the semester can be very stressful while preparing for exams. In order to count down to the end of the semester and our winter break, our staff and students participated in 12 Days of Winter Fun. These days provided many laughs and hopefully a little breather between all the studying for exams.

Inclement Weather

As we enter the colder weather, this is a reminder of our inclement weather policy. Please check our Facebook page for announcements; a Remind will also be sent if we are delayed or closed.

Remember that the Christanna site in Alberta follows the Brunswick County Public Schools' weather closing and delays, and the John H. Daniel site in Keysville follows the weather closing and delays of Lunenburg County Public Schools.

See our website for more information on our policy.

Parent Advisory Committee

Our second Parent Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 6:00pm until 7:00pm in Chase City at the Estes Center. At this meeting, we plan on discussing the 5-year GSSV strategic plan and gathering some input from the parents on goals for our program over the net 5 years.

If you are interested in serving on this committee, please complete the PAC Google Form.

In an effort to continue the partnership and communication with our parents, we are hoping to grow our Parent Advisory Committee that will meet at least twice a year. We would like at least two parents from each participating high school to be on this committee. These parents will be the liaison between the community and GSSV. Of course, direct communication with Mrs. Swain is still always welcome if there is an immediate or private concern.
