Halloween Costume Guidelines
Halloween Costume Expectations
Children are permitted to wear a simple Halloween costume to school on this day. Please see the costume guidelines below:
Costumes should not impact the student's ability to be transported to school nor impact their ability to participate in learning activities throughout the day.
Masks are not permitted as part of the costume.
Children are to WEAR THEIR COSTUMES TO SCHOOL and will keep them on throughout the day.
Costumes should be fun and appropriate as opposed to costumes that depict blood, violence, death, or gruesome in nature. Offensive costumes should not be worn and no weapons or fake blood should be brought to school.
Makeup or face paint should not be a part of your child’s costume for school.
Please plan for costumes to be comfortable and not big and bulky, as students will be wearing them throughout the day.
Success!
To teach a child to write a sentence is pretty amazing, and to have a 9 year old write a paragraph is astonishing. However, to see 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students write a paragraph using textual evidence, and making sure it flows well using transitional words...that is college level stuff there! Miss McCauley and Mr. Magyar are so proud of the work of the students and staff! This is just one of many great things happening here at BBH Intermediate.
Special shout out to some of our 5th graders as they had a successful week by winning their league volleyball championship in exciting fashion by taking the final set 15-13! Congrats to Skylar Wood, Dani Patete, Lily Kosir, Eva Cox, Amelia Treter, Maddie Erker, Josie Suttmiller, and Lou Berdysz.
Bus Evacuations This Week
Fines For Intentional Chromebook Damage or Lost Chargers

- Breaking their screen because of horseplaying.
- Losing a charger
If any of the above occurs, the following will be charged to the student's school fees. Families will be notified. Chargers are $10, broken screens are $20, and any intentional damage is at least $20.

AASA, The School Superintendents Association Survey
The survey link will be shared with district families on Sunday, October 25th.
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District is proud to be a participating district in a nationwide research initiative led by AASA, The School Superintendents Association, in partnership with ThoughtExchange. We are joining thousands of school districts across the country in an important conversation about public confidence in education and how schools can best prepare students for the future.
At the heart of this initiative are two important questions: How can we ensure public confidence reflects the outstanding work happening in our classrooms every day? And what do our students need most to be successful in an ever-changing world?
We are inviting all BBHCSD parents, staff, and community members to share their perspectives through a brief, anonymous survey. The survey takes approximately 5–8 minutes to complete and asks participants to reflect on their confidence in public education, identify areas of strength, and suggest opportunities for improvement.
Why is your participation important?
Your feedback will serve two important purposes. First, it will contribute to nationwide research findings presented at the National Conference on Education in Atlanta in February 2027. Second, BBHCSD will receive its own district-specific results, providing valuable insights into our community's perspectives and priorities.
These findings will help inform the development of our next Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District strategic plan and provide important insight into community priorities as we prepare for future levy discussions.
We encourage every family and community member to participate. Whether you currently have children attending our schools or simply care about the future of public education, your voice matters.

Basketball Jones Assembly!
We have great students! They truly are a wonderful group of kids. Like any parent, I'm reminded daily at home with my three daughters that no child is perfect, but that’s what makes watching them grow so special.
On Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting the incredible Basketball Jones! Beyond showing off his amazing skills, he delivered an inspiring message to our students about perseverance, kindness, taking ownership of their choices, leadership, and if you want something you have to do the work!
As you can see in the photos below, our students and staff were completely engaged from start to finish with the music, movement, and positive message. A huge thank you to our PSO for making this unforgettable experience possible for our school!

Success!
As I prepare for my 6th graders' championship cross country race today by getting my rain gear ready, it is always nice to see and hear about the success of our students outside the classroom. Whether it’s theater, Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts, athletics, or other activities, Bee Nation is super proud of your accomplishments!
Below, this weekend, some of our 4th graders were part of a championship volleyball team, and some of our 4th and 5th graders contributed to a fall softball championship team! Congrats, ladies!
What To Do With The Halloween Pumpkins?!
As Halloween comes to a close, The BBHCSD is encouraging our families to embrace sustainability by participating in the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District's Pumpkin Composting Program! Instead of sending your pumpkins to a landfill, give them a second life by turning them into nutrient-rich compost!
Following Halloween, special 20-yard collection containers will be available at designated locations throughout Cuyahoga County for one week. Fortunately, a local drop off site is available for BBHCSD families. Residents can simply drop off their pumpkins and gourds to the Brecksville Service Department, located at 9023 Brecksville Road, where they will then be transported to a composting facility for sustainable composting.
What Can Be Composted?
Whole pumpkins and gourds
Carved jack-o'-lanterns
Decaying pumpkins
What Is NOT Accepted?
Painted, bleached, or chemically treated pumpkins
Pumpkins decorated with permanent markers
Candles, stickers, or other decorations
Cornstalks, hay bales, yard waste, or kitchen scraps
Plastic bags or other packaging
All pumpkins and gourds must be placed directly into the collection containers without bags.
Please remove all candles, decorations, and stickers before dropping them off.
Since launching in 2023, the program has helped keep pumpkins out of landfills, collecting and composting more than seven tons of pumpkins and gourds during its inaugural year alone!
For other outdoor organic decorations, families can find an appropriate yard waste disposal facility. Please do not place pumpkins in your regular yard waste collection.
For additional information, collection locations, or questions about the program, contact the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District at (216) 443-3749 or email info@cuyahogarecycles.org.
Let's do our part to make this Halloween a little greener and continue building a more sustainable community. Go Bees!

Please Bring A Form Of ID When Signing Your Child Out Or Volunteering
BBHES Parents/Guardians,
At BBHES, the safety and security of our students is our highest priority. To ensure our campus remains safe, we require a valid physical photo ID (such as a driver’s license or state ID) whenever you sign a student out or enter the building.
For Student Sign-Out: When you arrive, our staff will verify the name on your ID against the authorized contacts listed in our school system. If you do not have your ID with you, our staff will ask you to retrieve it before your child can be signed out.
For Volunteers & Visitors: If you plan to volunteer in our school or visit for an event, please remember to bring your photo ID with you to check in at the main office before entering.
While we understand this may occasionally cause a brief delay, these protocols are strictly enforced to safeguard every student in our care. We encourage you to keep your ID handy whenever you plan to visit.
Thank you for your partnership and cooperation in keeping our school community safe! If you have any questions or need to update your student's authorized contact list, please feel free to contact the main office.
Did You Know~ Attendance Policies and State Law
As we continue through the 2026–2027 school year, we want to make families aware of important changes to Ohio’s attendance requirements and explain two terms you may hear throughout the year: Chronic Absenteeism and Habitual Truancy.
While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are very different from one another. Most importantly, chronic absenteeism includes both excused and unexcused absences, while truancy is based specifically on unexcused absences.
Under Ohio Law, All Absences Count
Under Ohio law, ALL ABSENCES COUNT, toward Chronic Absenteeism collection. For awareness, attendance is calculated in hours and minutes, not simply days. As a result, repeated tardiness, early dismissals, appointments, and partial-day absences accumulate over the course of the school year.
A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the instructional time in the school year, regardless of the reason for the absence.
This means that time missed for both excused and unexcused reasons counts toward chronic absenteeism, including:
Student Illness
Medical, Dental, or Behavioral Health Appointments
Family Illness/Funerals
Religious Holidays
College Visits
Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals
Other Excused or Unexcused Absences
A student does not need to miss long stretches of school to become chronically absent. Missing approximately one to two days per month can result in a student reaching the chronic absenteeism threshold by the end of the year.
Why Attendance Matters
These changes from the state are designed to encourage schools and families to identify attendance concerns earlier rather than waiting until a significant amount of instructional time has already been lost.
At BBHES, our goal is not simply to send attendance letters or meet a state requirement. We want to work collaboratively with families to understand why a student may be missing school and, when appropriate, identify supports that can help.
We also recognize that students become ill, have medical appointments, experience family emergencies, and encounter circumstances that legitimately require them to miss school. An absence may absolutely be excused while still counting toward the state's chronic absenteeism calculation. That distinction is important for families to understand.
If you receive an attendance notification from BBHES, we encourage you to review your child's attendance record and contact the school if you have questions or believe there is an error. Our administrative and attendance teams are happy to work with you.

What's new at BBH Intermediate?
Our Third classes had a chance to go on a nature field trip thanks to the Metroparks. It is quite amazing what we have in our own backyard here at BBH.
There are also some pictures of our students from Mr. Sybo's class making a connection to the book Hatchet and the survival tool known as a paracord. It's amazing what that little bracelet has the capabilities to do. Thank you to our parent volunteers for helping and making this a success.
Just like any class, you will find some pictures of students doing some good old fashion learning. I am so proud of the students and staff, the bar is set high by the staff and the students really are doing some amazing learning.

Classroom Party Volunteer Sign-up
The classroom party sign-ups for each grade are below. Reminder: Families may volunteer for only one party per classroom at this time including spouses/partners/family of Room Parents (any multiple sign-ups will be deleted). If there are any open spots remaining after the Halloween party on October 30th, you will be invited to sign up for an additional party. This process ensures that as many families as possible have the opportunity to participate.
Also, if you sign up for an alternate spot, that means you will be available to help even with a short or same day notice. The alternate may only attend the party if called upon by that classroom’s room parents.

Bee Your Best Beestro Lunch!
Below are our students that had lunch with the high schoolers because they were nominated by their teacher for being leaders in our school and modeling kindness! Congrats to these amazing kiddos and thank you high school students! This month we are focusing on responsibility.
Kids are doing great!
In life, nothing is perfect, and it's easy to reflect on the things that don't always go the way we planned. However, the students and staff are doing amazing. Miss McCauley and I try to say good morning or good afternoon to every classroom, every day. That short hello says so much to us because when we pop in, the teachers are showcasing their talents and care for our students. In response, the students are listening, collaborating, trying, and staying engaged!
Again, good luck to all of our students participating in a game and/or activity this weekend! Special shout-out to the U12 Boys CAPS team, who won the Great Lakes Tournament last weekend at the Canton Hall of Fame!

Attendance Laws
Ohio’s attendance rules have changed, and families should know that both excused and unexcused absences now count toward chronic absenteeism. A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the required school hours, regardless of the reason for the absence. Regular attendance is important to help students stay engaged and successful in school and attending when not sick is important to the students overall ability to perform well academically, socially, and emotionally.

WIN Time (What I Need)
Like last year, our students may work with different teacher throughout the year! The purpose is to provide extra academic support tailored to exactly what your child needs right now, whether that’s extra practice on a tricky concept or a little bit of a challenge to help them grow. These short blocks of time are a great way for us to give our students targeted academic support, and we are really excited to see how much they progress here at BBHES.
Final Forms vs. Dismissal Forms
The dismissal forms filled out in classrooms during Meet the Teacher are for emergency purposes only (e.g., evacuation or loss of power).
Please ensure all individuals authorized to pick up your child are listed in FinalForms under Emergency Contacts. If you experience any issues with FinalForms, please contact your grade-level secretary:

Our Character Strong program guides students toward making positive choices by centering each month around an essential core value, including kindness, responsibility, perseverance, and honesty. Throughout the school year, we actively look for students who embody these monthly focus areas and celebrate them whenever they step up to do the right thing. By recognizing everyday acts of courage, empathy, and cooperation, we foster an encouraging school community where good character becomes a lifelong habit.
We started off with Kindness, next week we will emphasize responsibility.

- Families, you did great. Just another friendly reminder for the safety of all of our staff, students and families, please utilize the drop off loop for arrival. Parents should remain in the car.
- When sending in money for your child's lunch account, please label it clearly with your child's first and last name in the memo line. Beekeeper families must park in the lot and enter the building to sign in their child. There is absolutely no parking in the front loop at any time.
- Please bring your driver's license when volunteering in the building or picking up a child. We will not release a child to any adult without the proper identification. Volunteers will not be admitted in the building without a valid driver's license or state ID.
- Please be sure that your PikMyKid Default is set. Families will no longer be able to change the default mode after Monday. Any changes to dismissal modes must be done through the calendar on the app. If your default must change during the year, please notify Mrs. Davies, our school secretary. Remember the default mode is the mode your child will use most frequently during the week (bus, car line, after school beekeepers, walker, etc)
iReady Inform Benchmarks
This week and next, students will be taking their iReady Inform Benchmark Assessments, with the exception of 3rd Grade Reading. These are assessments that provide data to help better support and enrich the students. We will prompt students to take their time, and try your best.

Expectation Meetings Slide
The students at BBH Elementary are an extraordinary group of individuals. This does not happen by accident, it starts at home. Starting from Kindergarten all the way to 5th grade, we strive to have students make good choices, be kind to one another, and try their very best. The slide Miss McCauley and I shared with students reiterated these values. Please feel free to give it a look if you want to see what we discussed with your child.

A Few Important Reminders
- For the safety of all of our staff, students and families, please utilize the drop off loop for arrival. Parents should remain in the car.
- Please be sure to update your PikMyKid app to reflect your child's dismissal plan for the first day of school. All students were defaulted to bus, so it is important for parents to make the necessary changes in the app if your child will not be riding the bus home.
- Please do not drop your child off prior to 8:45 am. All cars will line up in the front loop of the school. Staff will be outside to assist so parents should not exit vehicles. All students must exit on the curbside of the car.
- When sending in money for your child's lunch account, please label it clearly with your child's first and last name in the memo line.Beekeeper families must park in the lot and enter the building to sign in their child. There is absolutely no parking in the front loop at any time.
- Please bring your driver's license when volunteering in the building or picking up a child. We will not release a child to any adult without the proper identification. Volunteers will not be admitted in the building without a valid driver's license or state ID.
- Please label all lunchboxes, water bottles, and coats so they can be returned to your child if found.
- Please review the traffic flow map for arrival and dismissal.
Cell Phones and SmartWatches
Phones and Smartwatches are not permitted to be used throughout the day for texting/phone calls. This also includes field trips. These should be stored in your child's backpack or kept at home.
If a cell phone, smartwatch, or other device needs to be addressed for any reason we will utilize this protocol:
1st: Time is a warning by staff and student will put it away in their locker.
2nd: The device will be taken and given back at the end of the day. Parents will be notified.
3rd: The device will be taken and parents will have to come and pick it up after school.

Medication Drop Off Date and Time
2026-2027 Medication Drop Off Dates and Times
If your student requires medication during school hours, ONLY BBHCSD clinic staff will be authorized to receive student medications and over-the-counter medicines. Please note that building secretaries and administrators will not accept any medication drop-offs without BBHCSD clinic staff present for any reason. This district protocols verifies the proper collection and receipt of prescriptions or medications, ensuring student well-being and adherence to any medicine distribution guidelines required by healthcare professionals.
If a student needs to take medication during the school day, all required medical forms must be properly completed and submitted in advance. These forms are available under the Health Services section of the District website:
https://www.bbhcsd.org/departments/pupil-services/health-services
Clinic staff will be available to accept medication on the following dates and times for BBH Intermediate Families.
Elementary (Intermediate) School, Grades 3–5: August 17, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
If you are unable to attend during these times, medications can be brought to the clinic staff on any school day during regular building hours.
Additional School Supply Drop Off Tuesday, 8/18
Safe Arrival, Please Be Familiar With This
Safe Arrivals Attendance System:
BBHES will be using SafeArrival, an attendance system designed to streamline absence reporting. It will allow for parents to report absences via an app, website, or phone number and will notify parents when their student is marked absent. Notifications will be sent via email, text message, and a follow-up phone call if the absence has not been reported after the initial messages.
Please be patient as we roll this new system out. If you notice an unexcused absence please notify Heather Rakestraw at 440-740-4109 on the next school day. I may take an overnight sync to update the error.
Resources:
PikMyKid App and Arrival/Dismissal Procedures
- All PikMyKid accounts have been defaulted to "Bus". All families must download the app and make the necessary change in PikMyKid for car pick-up, afterschool beekeepers, walkers, or afterschool clubs. Please default your account to the dismissal mode your child will use on a regular basis. Daily and reoccurring changes can be made by clicking on the dates needed for a change within the app. If you do not change your child's dismissal mode prior to the first day of school, your child will ride the bus home on that day. For more information on downloading Pikmykid, please reference the information below.
- Any changes in dismissal modes must be changed in your Pikmykid account no later than 2:30 pm. If you need assistance with this process, please email or call Mrs. Maria Camperchioli.
- Display all car tags so they can be easily seen by our dismissal team. All families were provided a tag during the Meet and Greets. Please keep them in your cars even if car pick-up is not your primary mode. We use these tags in the event of an emergency as well.
- Please be sure to obey ALL traffic signs in the parking lot. I frequently witness cars entering the lot where signs are clearly posted as an exit only. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe.
- If you need to pick up your child early, please make sure to park, come in, and sign out your child prior to 2:45 pm. No early dismissals after this time. We will not release a child to an adult without the proper identification, so please bring your driver's license.
- All walkers and bikes will be picked up on the sidewalk near the preschool. A staff member will cross the students and meet families on the north side of the property. Parents are not permitted to pick up walkers/bikers at the building/doors.
Additional PikMyKid Informtaion
BBHES will continue to use the PikMyKid dismissal application this school year just like last year. The student information should still be populated in the program. All families will get a car tag which can be picked up at the Meet and Greets, or 5th Grade Supply Drop Off Nights.
If you are not familiar with the app, please download it and review the information below.
PikMyKid is a dismissal software that is intended to simplify dismissal, reduce traffic congestion, and most importantly, improve overall safety.
To Learn a little more on your own, please check out the following link that will show you a few of the PikMyKid features. https://www.pikmykid.com/features/for-parents/
All families will need to download the application and complete the registration process if not already done.
Below are a few resources to assist with the process.
Transportation and Bus Info
Transportation and Bus Lists
Use the following link for information about bus transportation including bus routes and "Here Comes the Bus" app. All routes should be updated by 8/08/25. Click here for the website.
Important Bus Information
As we prepare for the start of a new school year, we want to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding in the first few days and weeks of school as bus drivers begin to navigate new bus routes and new bus riders learn procedures to help ensure safe and timely pick-ups and drop-offs each day. Initial delays in pick-up times may occur, but rest assured, if your bus is running a bit behind during this initial learning phase for riders, transportation is coming.
Here are a few reminders of actions that can be taken to keep our students, drivers, and the community at large as safe as possible during transport.
- Be at the bus stop five minutes prior to stop time.
- Always know your place of safety. This will be assigned by your driver.
- Be aware of the “Danger Zone” – remember to stay 10 feet away from the bus to help ensure that the driver can see you. Never walk behind the bus.
- Use handrails when entering and exiting the school bus. Enter and exit in a single-file line.
- Always keep aisles clear by keeping backpacks and other personal items on laps.
- Students must stay in their seats, facing forward. Do not cause any distractions for the drivers.
- Stop, look left and right, and listen when crossing the street. Please wait for the driver to signal that it is safe to cross.
- To ensure safety at railroad crossings, always remain quiet until the bus has crossed the railroad tracks and the driver says it is okay to resume talking.
- Know where all emergency exits are and, in the case of an emergency, be sure to listen to drivers for any instructions.
Motorists : Please Follow All Traffic Laws Regarding Buses
According to the most recent one-day survey, school buses are illegally passed over 225,000 times every day in America. The National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) reports that more than 114,000 school bus drivers in 36 states witnessed more than 67,000 vehicles illegally passing their buses. When scaled nationally, it equates to a staggering 39.3 million dangerous violations each school year. In Ohio, more than 1,400 drivers reported 462 left-side illegal passes and 17 on the right side; scaling the numbers annually equates to over 4,500 on the left side and 170 on the right.
School bus traffic laws are in effect for the safety of children or other passengers entering or leaving a school bus. Children often will be crossing the street at the bus stop, so these laws are extremely important for their safety.
