Dear Norfolk Public Schools’ Families:

As we navigate through the winter months, I want to take a moment to reflect upon the incredible journey we have shared so far this school year. The dedication and resilience demonstrated by our entire school division continues to inspire me deeply. From the warmth and creativity found in our classrooms to the enthusiasm and engagement in our extracurricular programs, we are fostering meaningful experiences that nurture our students' growth and unlock their potential. This progress is a testament to the steadfast commitment of our community to prioritize education and the well-being of our students, even in the face of challenges.

December and January usher in the beauty of a new season and provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect and express gratitude. These months are a time to celebrate the hard work and commitment of our families, teachers, and staff who strive each day to create a positive and productive learning environment. I encourage everyone to acknowledge the efforts of those who make our diverse educational community so special.

Our recent academic progress has been inspiring, reflecting the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and families. Open and consistent parent-teacher communication remains a key element of our success, helping us to understand each student’s unique needs and develop personalized strategies to support his/her growth. Our educators are deeply committed to partnering with families, working together to ensure each child has the tools and opportunities to thrive academically and personally. With every milestone we achieve, we reinforce the importance of collaboration and a shared vision for success.

As we embrace the heart of winter, this is a wonderful time to celebrate the diverse traditions and cultures that make our community so vibrant. By honoring and learning from our differences, we create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and supported. This spirit of inclusion strengthens our division and enriches the learning experience for all. Let’s continue to find joy in learning from one another and building a community where diversity is a source of pride and strength. Your involvement makes a significant difference in our students’ lives and in our entire school community. Each effort, no matter how small, contributes to creating an environment where students feel supported and empowered.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping our students reach their full potential. As we move forward, let us continue to work together, embracing our shared vision of success for every child, No Matter What!

Wishing you peaceful moments and bright spirits this season!

If You Miss School, You Miss Out!

The Norfolk Public Schools' School-to-School Attendance Challenge is in full swing! Across the division, schools are bringing creativity and enthusiasm to the forefront as they compete to highlight the importance of being present, on time, and ready to learn each day. From raps and chants to cheers, steps, and spirited theme weeks, our schools are proving that attendance counts at NPS!

This friendly competition underscores a vital message: When students miss school, they miss out. Chronic absenteeism—missing 10% or more of school days for any reason—has a significant impact on learning. It can hinder early reading skills, middle school achievement, and even high school graduation.

We’re proud to share that your efforts are making a difference! Norfolk Public Schools has seen a steady decline in chronic absenteeism, dropping from 24.3% in 2021-2022 to 16.8% in 2023-2024. This progress is a testament to the commitment of our families, educators, and community.

Let’s keep the momentum going! Together, we can continue this positive trend and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Please keep the lines of communication open by letting us know if there is something standing in the way of getting your child(ren) to school. We want to help so that we can continue to build on our promising growth in academic achievement in the coming year, as well as strive toward equity and excellence for all… no matter what!

Together, we can overcome the barriers to attendance and engagement. You can help by:

  • Making sure your child(ren) arrive(s) to school on time, every day.

  • Talking to your child(ren) about the importance of reporting to class on time, prepared, and ready to learn.

  • Scheduling family trips and vacations during scheduled school breaks.

  • Providing a written explanation for your child’s(ren’s) absences before they occur or on the first day they return to school.

  • Contacting your child’s(ren’s) school(s) if you have concerns or questions.

  • Making sure your contact information is up to date and you are receiving important school/division information.

Remember, if you miss school, you miss out!

Literacy Focus: Kick Off the New Year with the NPS Reading Race!

As we step into the New Year, let’s embrace the joys and opportunities reading brings to our lives. Winter Break is a perfect time to cozy up with a good book and create lasting memories through shared reading.

Research shows that reading just 14.2 additional minutes each day exposes students to more than one million additional words in a year, boosting vocabulary, comprehension, and academic success. Norfolk Public Schools invites families to join the Read 14.2 Initiative and participate in the NPS Reading Race! This winter, dedicate extra time to reading and capture the moments that matter. Snap photos of your reading adventures and share them on social media using the following dedicated hashtags: #Read14Point2NPS, #LiteracyRocksAtNPS, #NPSLovesLiteracy, and #LearnToReadReadToLearn.

Make literacy a priority this year by visiting your school library or the Norfolk Public Library to discover exciting new titles. Adult readers can even join in-person or online Book Clubs and students can Have Fun while visiting Norfolk Libraries! Let’s make 2025 a year filled with stories, growth, and shared reading moments! School Board Votes “YES” on Personal Electronic Communication Device and Cell Phone Policy

Save the Date: All Norfolk Public Schools will be cell phone-free starting on January 1, 2025

During their December 18, 2024, Business Meeting, the City of Norfolk School Board approved the Personal Electronic Communication Device/Cell Phone Policy JXXZ, which will go into effect on January 1, 2025. This policy is designed to promote a healthier, distraction-free learning environment by limiting the use of cell phones and personal electronic devices during the school day. Under the policy, students must turn off their devices before entering the school building and store them in their backpacks throughout the instructional day. Any emergency communication for students must occur through the school’s main office.

There are allowable exemptions for cell phones and personal electronic communication devices. These exemptions must be documented in a student’s 504 Plan (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act), Individualized Education Plan (IEP), or Individualized Health Care Plan. For students with medical needs, a medical exemption must be included in one of these plans to meet their unique requirements. If a student with a disability or an English learner has a documented accommodation, such as text-to-speech or translation services, and requires technology to ensure a free and appropriate public education, the IEP, Limited English Proficiency plan, or 504 teams will work together to identify and implement appropriate school-based assistive technology such as communication devices or tablets) to meet the student’s unique needs. For students requiring assistive technology, the IEP team or 504 committee will evaluate the features and characteristics of potential tools to identify the most suitable options. During this process, teams will also consider compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), ensuring that decisions do not draw unnecessary attention to the students involved.

We appreciate your understanding and partnership as we work to create a focused and positive learning environment for all students. If you have any questions or need to discuss possible exemptions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school principal for assistance.
