Parent - Week of 9/16
Week of September 16
Welcome to Week 5!
We’re officially in the groove of our sixth grade journey, and it’s been wonderful to be a part of the great community we’re building with our group of 444 students! Everyone is getting the hang of handling those locker locks and mastering the art of getting to class on time. It’s all part of the fun and growth that comes with middle school life.
Thank you for your continued support and open communication—it truly makes a difference. Together, we’re on the same team, working toward a fantastic year ahead!
Warmly,
Tera Thomas

Celebrate Clover's First Birthday! 🎉🐾
Our Student Council is hosting a special birthday party for Clover, our beloved therapy dog in training, who is turning one at the end of the month! To mark the occasion, from September 17-24, we’ll be collecting donations for One of a Kind Pet Rescue, where Officer Dan adopted Clover. Donation points will be tallied, and students will have the chance to earn a fun pod prize! Let’s come together to celebrate and support a great cause! Happy Bark-day!

Tackling Procrastination: A Must-Watch for Sixth Graders! ⏰
We know 14 minutes might feel like a lot, but we encourage you to watch this TED Talk with your sixth grader! The video, "Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator," dives into the world of procrastination and introduces the idea of the “Panic Monster.” It's a fun way to start a conversation about time management skills—something so important for our sixth graders as they navigate their busy schedules!

Erin's Law-Opt Out
Dear Parents of SMS Health Students:
Ohio’s 134th General Assembly recently enacted Senate Bill 288, which updated the prescribed curriculum for health education. It added requirements to provide developmentally appropriate instruction in child sexual abuse prevention, dating violence prevention and sexual violence prevention. The law includes requirements for student instruction, parent and legal guardian notification and training for school personnel. This law, also known as “Erin’s Law”, went into effect in January of 2023, with a mandate for Ohio school districts to implement these new requirements in grades K-12 during the 2024-2025 school year. More information about the requirements can be found here.
For middle school students, SB 288 requires that students in health classes receive developmentally appropriate instruction in dating violence prevention education and sexual violence prevention education, which must include instruction in recognizing dating violence warning signs and characteristics of healthy relationships in health classes.
Strongsville Middle School will begin teaching Speak Up - Empowered, to students enrolled in Health 6 and Health 8 during the 2024-2025 school year. School personnel selected this curriculum due to its age-appropriate content regarding abuse prevention and healthy relationships, as well as its approval from the Department of Education. Participating in the abuse prevention curriculum may help to create a greater awareness of the warning signs associated with unhealthy relationships and prevent abuse before it occurs. The content includes instruction on the following required components:
Personal safety and assault prevention
Dating violence prevention education
Sexual violence prevention education
Dating violence warning signs
Characteristics of a healthy relationship
