Week 7

Dear Elmore School Families,

We had another great week at the elmore School, beginning with our annual Trip to the Elmore Fire Station and ending with our first day of ECO!

With the School year well underway, this week we started some of our regular traditions. Each year, during Fire Safety Week in October, the Elmore Fire Station welcomes us to the Fire Station to teach us about fire safety and what to do in the event of an emergency. On Monday, we walked to the Elmore Fire station where the students talked about fire safety, and practiced Stop, Drop, and Roll. They also learned about the gear firefighters use, and, as a right of passage for third graders, they are able to try on the firefighting gear. Then the students were able to go into a couple of the fire trucks. Thank you to the volunteer Firefighters who took time out of their day to host us!

Students are continuing to work on writing personal narratives, This week they drafted their beginning and middle of their stories. Next week they will draft their endings and then they will be ready to edit and revise their writing.

In math this week, 1st and 2nd graders are learning how to use data on a graph to create diagrams to represent comparison problems and solve equations to find the difference between two or more categories. Third Graders are representing situation involving multiplication using diagrams and drawings and solving to find the unknown.

We had our first day of ECO (Educating Children Outdoors) on Friday. It was a great morning, enduring chilly wind, rain, and sun! Students played a fun fox tail tag game (predator and pray), they listened to a story with the theme of teaching the "3 Cares" ( care for the earth, care for each other, care for yourself) while enjoying their snacks. Then, students selected their Nature Names for the year and then created their name necklaces. Over the school year each student will be learning about their selected animal and will share their learning in writing and with a creative project. We also talked about fire safety, and heated tea water with a Kelly Kettle and everyone had a bit of warm tea before we ended our morning at a sit spot where students entered an nature note in their journals.

Next week will be our first ECO at the State Park. During ECO, a campfire creates a central meeting place for our outdoor classroom. In addition to the central focus, we also use the fire to create some delicious snacks! Most weeks we will have a tasty treat that students help to prepare for a little snack during forest choice. We need firewood! Please consider donating a few pieces of small, dry firewood or kindling. We appreciate your contribution.
