National Read Across America Day is celebrated every year on March 2nd. This is a day dedicated to encouraging children and young people to discover a wide world of literature that is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity The day was created and is hosted annually by the National Education Association.

Reading not only contributes to achievement it is very, very good for you. Research shows that regular reading**:

  • empowers you to empathize with other people

  • aids in sleep readiness

  • reduces stress

  • lowers blood pressure and heart rate

  • prevents cognitive decline as you age

  • contributes to a longer life

I hope your entire family can take a little time next Tuesday to read together. Visit the Read America website here for books, featured articles, and other resources.

4K SPREADS COMMUNITY KINDNESS

During this month, Mrs. Ruffing's 4K students at Southwood Glen have been learning about kindness. They read a book and it said one way to show kindness is to make people SMILE! The class talked about COVID-19 and how many grandmothers and grandfathers can't see their families and how that might make them feel sad. The class jumped into action and made valentines for the residents of Elizabeth Residence in Franklin. As you can see in the photos below they were SO happy to receive these special messages from the AM and PM 4K classes! Mission accomplished! Kindness shared. #BetterCommunity.

Additional groups of individuals will become eligible for vaccine beginning March 1. Vaccine supply is still extremely low to local health departments and Franklin Health Department continues to work on getting the vaccine to Phase 1A, first responders, and those over age 65 at this time.

If you are in a newly eligible group (see image below) please provide your contact information here to be notified when vaccine will be available for these groups through the Health Department.
