We're excited to share our Little Literacy Links newsletter with you! The goal of this newsletter is to provide simple, fun literacy activities you can try at home to support your child’s reading and writing skills. You can expect to receive these newsletters periodically between now and the end of the school year—and also throughout the summer. If you have any questions or would like additional support, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Read, Read, and Read some more!

The best way to support your child’s learning at home is by reading together! Reading with your child helps build their knowledge, vocabulary, and understanding of what they read. As you read, point out any big or unfamiliar words and take a moment to explain what they mean. It’s also helpful to talk about the message or lesson the story teaches. The books in this series by Jory John are wonderful—they share meaningful messages in fun and engaging ways that kids really enjoy!

Practice Chanting the Alphabet

We use a program called Fundations to help students learn letters and sounds. This is the alphabet chart we use in class. If possible, have your child practice saying the alphabet daily—just like in the video (click on the picture to the right). Strong knowledge of letter names and sounds lays the foundation for more advanced reading and spelling skills. A few minutes of daily practice can make a big difference!

Correct Pencil Grip

Holding the pencil correctly is a skill we learn right away in Kindergarten. Here is a video (click here) that shows how we do this.
