CAPTAIN CROWTHER'S CORNER

Ahoy Navigator Parents!

WINTER BREAK IS HERE! Before we close out this calendar year, I have a few things to share with you.

First of all, a HUGE thank you to our Negley PTA and KIDS TOOTH TEAM in Buda for bringing us Chick Fil A boxed lunches on Friday! What a great treat to finish out the week. IT WAS A HIT AND WE THANK YOU!!

Next, I'd like to address the "Una Incident", as I'm sure many of you saw all over Facebook a few nights ago, which blasted that we were going to have this animal euthanized. The last time I checked, if a stray animal was trapped and taken to the animal shelter, they are kept there to try to find the owner OR placed for adoption. They are not taken for immediate euthanization.

For those of you who do not know Una, she is a cat whom roams the Plum Creek neighborhood. Apparently she is an icon (and of course anyone who does NOT live in Plum Creek would not know). She has visited Negley many times in the past, because as you know, any animal who roams will go where they want. As a parent, I'm sure you know that children are drawn to animals - which is sweet AND could be very dangerous. Although I am a HUGE animal lover, my first and foremost job is to keep each and every human Negley student and staff member SAFE.

The story I've been told is that no one knows who Una belongs to. They don't know if the family left the neighborhood or are still here. If she shows up to a PC home she will be let in, fed, etc. She's a smart cat - no doubt! Regardless of this, whether it be a dog, cat, raccoon, fox, etc.- they do not need to be on the school grounds due to safety!

"Una would never hurt anyone." How do you know that? I don't know her owner. She isn't wearing a collar. When was the last time this roaming cat had her rabies shot? If one of our sweet children picked her up and hurt her, she WOULD bite or scratch. What does that mean for this child? A trip to the doctor and probably rabies treatments. I promise - you do NOT want to see your child go through this.

Last week, Una got into the building as students were coming in. She was put out several times, but kept getting back in. If an animal is on campus, and they have their collar and ID tags on, we will contact the owner that their pet is at the school or roaming the neighborhood. We have done that many times over if the animal will not leave. We've had many families come up to school to retrieve their pets.

We have students on the playground all day long. We now have children in the portables. Wild animals LOVE to hide under the portables. We can't allow any animal to do this - it's not safe, regardless if the animal is the icon of Plum Creek. Please share this with your animal loving neighbors who do not have kids at an elementary campus if this topic of conversation comes up. I will always put my students' safety over that of an animal.

We have asked that the trap be taken down over the holidays so that no animal is trapped in there over the winter break. We will also ask that it be placed in a different location if we find the need to set a trap again in the future. I'm told that Una is back with her owners and is safe. For that, I am glad.

As always, please reach out to me if you have concerns about issues - especially those posted on Facebook. As many of you know, I am more than willing to hear your concerns - always!

During these next two weeks, please wear your masks when you are out in public. Keep washing hands and sanitizing. It would be amazing if the 2nd week in January, I don't have to send those annoying COVID emails out! LOL! Please keep an eye on your students for any types of symptoms and get tested if you believe there is a need to do so.

I would like to add a note here - our cases of flu and strep are down significantly from those we saw in December of last year!

On a final note, we made it through 2020! I want to wish each and every one of you a wonderful holiday season. Enjoy the time with your family.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We will see you January 5, 2021!

Important Student Absence Information! Please read and register your child in Schoology

With this year being a little different than any before, we are constantly trying to improve our procedures to make things as simple as possible for you and your student(s). That being said, we have come up with a new way to ensure that your student gets attendance credit for any day that they miss school, but are at home still working!

In Schoology, your student will need to go to “Courses”, listed at the top of the page, and click on “NES ATTENDANCE”. From there, click on their grade, and then open the pdf. Doing this will ensure that your student gets attendance credit for that day. Please be aware that if your student it out multiple days, you will need to follow this process DAILY. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Kaci at the front desk, 512-268-8501, and/or email nes.attendance@hayscisd.net.

We know rest is best when your student is not feeling well, so if your student is not up to doing any work due to illness, please be sure to email nes.attendance@hayscisd.net so we can code the absence correctly!

Daily Health Checks

PLEASE check your child for Covid symptoms before sending or dropping your child off at school! This includes:

TEMPERATURE CHECK

*Asking your child how they are feeling

*Look at their face and eyes! This is the FIRST thing we look at when a child is sent to the nurse. Their little eyes will tell you how they are feeling way before symptoms often begin.

If they do not feel well, PLEASE do not send them to school. They can meet with their teacher virtually. If they feel better later in the morning, bring them on in!

Nuggets from Nurse Jill

Hello Navigators and Parents!

Due to the pandemic and maintaining student, teacher and staff safety we are required by the district and TEA to stick to strict policy and procedures regarding when an ill student can return to campus.

Our goal is to get students back to campus as quickly and as safely as possible. When your student is kept home for illness or is sent home from the school, there are 3 options to choose from to return to campus.

Pick ONE option:

  1. 10 days self-isolation since symptoms began AND improvement in symptoms AND 24 hours fever free (without the use of fever reducing medication) *ALL 3 must be met with this option.
  2. The student is cleared by a physician to return to school with an alternate diagnosis listed on the doctor’s note OR a statement explaining they have no concern for COVID. Also, symptoms must be improved or resolved for 24 hours.
  3. The student has had a negative PCR test result indicating symptoms were not due to COVID-19. A rapid antigen test will NOT be accepted. Also, symptoms must be improved or resolved for 24 hours.

Curative is offering FREE COVID testing. This is a mouth swab test that the district is accepting results from for return to school. See the flyer here for locations and to schedule an appointment.

Because Hays County is considered to be an area of high-community spread, parents must ensure they do not send a child to campus if the child has any ONE of the following COVID-19 symptoms:

* Temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth

* Sore throat

* Congestion or runny nose

* New, uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing or for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline.

* Diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, or abdominal pain

* New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever

* New loss of taste or smell

* New onset of fatigue or muscle/body aches

If your child has any one of the above symptoms, is lab-confirmed with COVID-19 OR has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting results, do not send him/her to campus and contact me. Please also do not send your child to school if a household member has tested positive or is awaiting COVID-19 test results.

Campus nurses are your point of contact for all things related to COVID so please reach out if you have questions.

Remember to bring your picture ID - always!

Please remember that ANYTIME you come to school to join your child (other than just dropping off your child at the beginning of the day) you MUST check in at the front office and get your Raptor sticker. To receive a sticker, you must present a photo ID regardless if this is your first time or thousandth time to check in to the school. This is for student safety and for us to know who is on our campus at all times. Thank you for being nice to the front office staff as they enforce this safety measure.

This does not apply to evening activities - just the school day.

TRANSPORTATION TAGS

ALL FAMILIES WILL NEED A TRANSPORTATION TAG IF THEY WILL BE PICKING UP THEIR CHILD FROM CAMPUS.

These tags are super important for picking up your child at dismissal. Each family has a distinct number - it is your family number. Instead of calling out your child's name for all to hear, we call your family number. Each family will receive 2 cards and 3 round discs that need to be attached to your child's backpack. If you need extras for another adult that may be picking up your child , just let our Receptionist, Ms. Goodman know when she gives you your original. There will be a $1.00 charge for extra cards OR to replace a lost card after this initial pick up. This fee is to help us with replacement materials. So - the first ones are FREE, but later on there will be the small charge.

PLEASE EMAIL MS. GOODMAN TO SCHEDULE A TIME TO PICK UP YOUR TRANSPORTATION TAGS or STOP BY THE RECEPTION AREA.

If you are picking up your child in the car rider line, these tags can hang from your passenger side visor using a rubber band or from your rearview mirror. It makes it easy for us to see and call your number. If you do not have your car tag, you will be asked to drive to the front office and present your ID in order to pick up your child.

If you are walking to the school to pick up your child, you will need to show your tag to your child's teacher OR the teacher on duty. They will check the number on the card with the tag attached to your child's backpack before releasing your student to you.
