CHRISTIAN VALUE THIS HALF -TERM

We are proud to be a Church of England school.

Our vision is, 'Learning and growing in the love of God' (1 John 4:16)

We focus on one Christian value each half-term. This term, the focus of collective worship and wider school activities is on 'Honesty.'

NEW LEARNING

We'd like to share some of the learning journey our pupils will be be experiencing this half-term.

Class 1

This half-term, class 1's topic is 'Would DT have helped traditional tale characters?'. We will be focussing on traditional tales in English such as, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood, as well as, constructing our own fairy tale houses in DT. Alongside this, we will be learning all about plants in Science and even growing our own plants.

Class 2

This half term, pupils will enjoy a rich and varied curriculum that develops their curiosity, creativity and understanding of the world around them. In design and technology, children will take part in a Cracking Contraption project, where they will design, make and evaluate a working model that will safely transport an egg. This will develop their skills in planning, problem solving and using tools safely. In science, our learning will focus on every day materials, encouraging pupils to explore the properties and uses of different materials through hands-on investigation, including testing which materials will float, change shape or are best suited for specific purposes.

Class 3

This half-term, we will be learning how geographers work by developing our map skills, fieldwork techniques and understanding of places at a local, national and global levels. We will begin by revisiting our locational knowledge, identifying countries around the world using apps, atlases, globes and digital mapping. We will also revise important geographical ideas such as the Equator, hemispheres and the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, exploring how these world zones affect climate. Next, we will focus on key mapping skills. We will learn how to use Ordnance Survey symbols and practise creating accurate 4 and 6 figure grid references to describe locations in the UK and beyond. These skills will help us to understand human and physical features and how landscape changes over time. As geographers, we will then begin planning and carrying out fieldwork. We will explore our local area of Sledmere, identifying human and physical features, using sketch maps, plans, photographs and graphs. We will think carefully about the types of questions geographers ask, including open and closed questions and decide what data we need to collect. Later in the half-term we will create a clear enquiry question before visiting the city of York to gather information.
