Reflections from Pastor Jennifer

Have you ever held a conch shell up to your ear? When we were children and did so, we were told that the whooshing we heard was the sound of the ocean. As we grew up, we probably learned that it was actually the sound of our blood rushing. I was today years old when I learned that the shell is an amplifier for ambient sound. So the noise of a conch shell is actually just the surrounding noises being amplified.

To what are you listening most closely? Is it the sound of busyness and expectations? Or are you hearing the still, small voice of your heavenly Father? The nearer you come to Him, the more the voices of pressure and disappointment fade away. Be still and listen to His voice today.

OCC

Keep those school supplies coming! We want to be able to provide plenty of supplies for the entire school year. We have plenty of crayons and we cannot include glue, but anything else is fair game! We also need more shoeboxes and shipping money.

August Focus

Keep in mind the giving that we have been asked to contribute to the FACES ministry in Ecuador. Sometime this month, give the cost a meal (you decide if that is a Value Meal or a meal from a fancy restaurant) to the cause of missions. If you have been able to get a giving slip, give that amount in the offering.

More on Missions

A few other ways to support missions this month are prayer and Bible reading. The Operation World website and mobile app provide information on how to pray for lost people and persecuted believers around the world: https://operationworld.org/. Be sure to read the CCOG daily devo for August: https://www.bible.com/reading-plans/32285-prayers-a-journey-through-eurasia

Journey to Journey

This Sunday, August 23rd there will be no service at the CCOG campus. Instead, we have all been invited to Journey Church in Huntersville. I will be preaching at both the 9am and 11am services. Communicate with one another so that we can see each other/sit together in whichever service you choose to attend.

5th Sunday

The final Sunday this month - August 30th - is a fifth Sunday! We plan to enjoy Waffle House style hashbrowns! There is a sign-up sheet for you to add your name to be able to contribute. Both breakfast and Bible study will be in the fellowship hall.

Returning to Our First Love - Bible App

Before you begin each day, still your heart. Put your phone down. Take a breath. You are meeting with your Father — the One who tore the veil so you could sit with Him. This is not a task. This is a homecoming.

Run To Him

"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV)
"The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him." Lamentations 3:25 (NKJV)

What it means

In the ancient world, when danger came, people ran to the tower. Not walked. Not strolled. Ran. The tower was the place of refuge, but only for those who moved toward it.

God's name is His character — everything He is. Strong. Faithful. Merciful. Present. When Scripture says the righteous run to His name, it means we run to Him — not to a technique, not to a fix, not to advice, not to another person first. To Him.

The name of the Lord is the highest and greatest — it stands above them all.

And here is the companion promise: the Lord is good to those who seek Him. Running to Him is not just an emergency response — it is a way of life. Some days you run because trouble is at your heels. Other days you run because your soul is simply thirsty for Him. Either way, He meets you. Lamentations was written from the ashes of a ruined city — and even there, in the rubble, the writer says: the Lord is good to the soul who seeks Him. No situation disqualifies you. Run.

How do we actually run to Him?

Running to God is not mystical. It looks like this:

  • The first thought, not the last resort. When the news breaks. When the text comes. When the fear rises. When the temptation whispers. Before you scroll, before you vent, before you strategize — you turn your face to Him. Even a single sentence: "Father, help me. I'm here. I need You."
  • Speaking His name. Say "Jesus" out loud when you're anxious. There is power in the name, not because the syllables are magic, but because saying it reorients your soul toward the One who is already with you.
  • Opening the Word. Running to Him means running to where He speaks. When you don't know what to do, open a Psalm. When you're afraid, open Isaiah 41. When you feel condemned, open Romans 8. The Word is the tower's doorway.
  • Refusing to run elsewhere first. We often run to food, to numbing, to people, to control, to complaint. Notice where your feet go by default. Then choose again.

Heart posture

Running to Him requires humility. It's admitting I cannot handle this on my own. The proud stay outside the tower. The righteous — those who love Him, delight in Him, walk with Him — they run in.

Today's practice

Every time something in your day pulls at your peace — big or small — pause and whisper His name. Then say: "You are my strong tower. I am safe in You."

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the places I run before I run to You. Teach my feet to move toward You first. Be my tower today. I hide myself in Your name. Amen.
