Around the Division
On March 14, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) successfully hosted its 3rd Annual Candle Day event at F.R. Haythorne Junior High. Seven schools were invited to share their knowledge of one of the seven grandfather teachings and how we can recognize that teaching during Candle Day. Elder Wilson Bearhead and his drummers came to share songs and teachings with the students and staff. Everyone in attendance received a cupcake to commemorate and honour the students who attended residential schools and never got to celebrate their birthdays.
Curriculum Highlights
Check out April's Word Study of the Month. Ms. McIntyre and Taryn learn about compound words, prefixes and suffixes, and how you can find them in English and in Cree. We also look at the special name of the place where we all live and go to school!
Language Updates
Northern Michif Language Residencies continued in March, led by Elder SkyBlue Mary Morin, a respected knowledge carrier and language expert. Throughout the residency at each school, Elder Morin has shared her deep understanding of Métis culture and language, guiding students and teachers through the rich history and unique linguistic aspects of Northern Michif, a vibrant blend of Cree and French.
