What is Instructional Coaching?
For the past few weeks our instructiona coaches have been training on the how we can cohesively align coaching to instructional practice at Aspire Trade High School.
As such, we will begin conducting, classroom walkthroughs next week. I want emphasize that instructional coaching is NOT evaluative or punitive. It is designed to provide you job-embedded professional development so that you can continue to grow and be supported as you grow and support our students.
According to the National Center on Improving Literacy, "instructional coaching is a type of professional development that is distinct from typical ‘one and done’ training. It is often delivered at the individual-level, involves a long-term relationship between the coach and teacher, and is embedded within a teacher’s specific classroom (Knight, 2009; Kraft et al., 2018). The purpose of instructional coaching is to improve the implementation of evidence-based practices in classrooms (Garbacz et al., 2017.)
Decades of research evaluating the effectiveness of professional development suggest that school or district-wide trainings without follow-up support are ineffective in changing teacher behavior or student outcomes (Desimone, 2009; Garbacz et al., 2015; Kraft et al., 2018). While these trainings may build teacher content knowledge, this rarely translates to the classroom or positively impacts students (Harn et al., 2013). Instead, it is instructional coaching that builds both teacher knowledge and pedagogical skill to improve student outcomes."

Instrucitonal Walkthroughs
To begin our professional devleopment involved with instructional coaching, our coaches will begin walkthroughs this week on the following areas listed below. This is a part of THEIR training to ensure we are calibrated around the same expectations for everyone. So, you do not have to do anything to prepare as you are not being evaluated.
We will collect data to determine which area to begin our professional devlopment focus. Note: The walkthrough will be brief so we may or may not see something listed below but you will not be "marked" for it because we are not using teacher names. However, these are expectations that we will focus on for our professional devlopment as a staff - as they are building wide expectatoins. Please let me know if you have any questions.
1. Greeting: Welcomes students by name as they enter the classroom.
2. Learning Intentions: Objectives, learning targets etc. are clearly identified and conveyed.
3. Attention: Gains and maintains attention throughout the lesson.
4. Feedback: Uses eye contact, body language, gestures, and expressions to convey a message that all students’ questions and opinions are important.
3. Frequent Responses: Provides multiple opportunities for all students to respond and receive feedback.
4. Lesson Structure: Has an opening, body and closure to each lesson.
