Alder Weekly Update
April 23, 2023
Hello Parents, Staff, and Students,
This week we had Take Your Child to Work Day. A huge thank you to Mrs. Yacovelli and Mrs. Schlam for their warm welcome to our staff and their children for lunch. It was awesome to meet our colleagues’ children. It was equally wonderful having our staff members’ children see all of their hard work.
Our Spring Dance is tonight. The theme was Neon Dance Party. We held it in the gym for extra special effects. Thank you to Renaissance and Parents’ Club for preparing this fun event for our students. We know it will be a hit!
Mr. McCafferty got the 8th grade Alder Stage Crew from the Wizard of OZ back together. They visited the high school to get a backstage tour of Beauty and the Beast. Upperclassmen guided them through the light booth, catwalks and specialty fly rigging before the production. We love when our students get opportunities to learn more about their areas of interest. We especially love when they get to visit the high school and other schools to see their great events.
Testing for NJSLA begins next week. Please see the email from me for details.
Check out the pictures on ehtalder Instagram. They are certain to bring a smile.

Take Your Child To Work Day
VERY SPECIAL SHOUTOUT to our Renaissance Club advisors, Mrs. Yacovelli and Mrs. Schlam, for all of the hard work they put in for Take Your Child To Work Day!
Students worked with Ms. Hinlicky's granddaughter and Ms. Phillips' son in Science class to learn about the law of conservation of matter. Together, they mixed substances and watched them change form by creating "lava lamps".
Mrs. Oglesby's girls got a chance to see their mom in action as she multitasked throughout the day! As an administrative professional, Mrs. Oglesby has many tasks such as answering the many phone calls that come through our main office, monitoring who enters and exits the building while security is out on duty, entering student attendance in our systems, running reports for staff, mailing out letters, managing grade changes for students, creating schedules for new students, and processing student transfers just to name a few!

Teacher Feature
Mr. Romeo - Health & PE
What is your position at Alder? What brought you here? How long have you been here?
I am one of the 5 Health and Physical Education Teacher's at Alder Avenue. I started here in 2010 as a Paraprofessional, and was hired as the Adaptive PE teacher for Alder and Fernwood in 2012. Since 2016 I have been primarily at Alder teaching 6th 7th and 8th grade general ed as well as some adaptive classes. I also coach high school soccer, in addition to boys basketball and coed track here at Alder.
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
The staff, the environment, the family, the values, and of course My "PE Squad", who make it easy to come to work everyday!
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
I think adjusting to the new schedule has been a bit of a challenge, but it's like a Michael Jordan quote that I preach to all of my athletes; "Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it."
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I attended Rowan University, Go Profs, where I received a BAS in Health and Exercise Science, as well as a teaching certificate.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
I love sports and being active. I like to travel and visit new places. I love the outdoors, especially the beach and boardwalk in the summer, as well as snowboarding in the mountains in the winter. I love my family, my friends, and my job! I also work as a server at a restaurant in Atlantic City on the weekends and the summer.
