Congratulations Multnomah! Congratulations Multnomah!

Magnet Merit Award

The Magnet Merit Award is a national recognition program by Magnet Schools of America (MSA) honoring magnet schools for academic excellence, innovative curriculum, diversity, and strong community involvement, with top honors like "Magnet School of Excellence" and "Magnet School of Distinction."

Winning the Magnet Merit Award recognizes our school's strong commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and high-quality programming. It means external reviewers evaluated our curriculum, teaching, and student outcomes and found them exemplary! This is confirmation that our school provides rigorous, focused learning opportunities that prepare students for future success. This award also raises our school’s visibility, attracting more resources, talented teachers, and community partnerships that benefit students. For families, it’s a sign that your child is learning in an environment that values high expectations, creativity, and continuous improvement, something to be proud of and to support.

Put First Things First

Using Leader in Me — Habit 3 (Put First Things First) at Home

Habit 3 teaches prioritizing important tasks over urgent distractions. Here’s a simple, practical guide parents can use.

Why it helps

  • Builds time‑management and self‑discipline.
  • Reduces family stress by making expectations clear.
  • Teaches children to choose long‑term goals (schoolwork, sleep) over short‑term urges (screens, snacks).

Quick steps to implement

  • Explain the idea simply: “Do the important things first — the things that help you grow.” Use age‑appropriate language.
  • Create a family calendar: Record schoolwork, activities, chores, and family time. Make it visible (fridge or shared app).
  • Teach a daily plan: Each morning (or night), have your child list 1–3 important priorities for the day (homework, practice, reading).
  • Use a “Big Rocks” routine: Show with jars or boxes—place big rocks (priorities) first, then pebbles (regular tasks), then sand (fun distractions). Demonstrate how skipping rocks makes a mess.
  • Set predictable routines: Design consistent blocks for homework, chores, free time, and sleep. Routines reduce decision fatigue.
  • Establish a “First Things First” checklist: Visual checklist near study space with steps like: 1) Materials ready, 2) Homework first, 3) Break, 4) Chore, 5) Screen time.
  • Model the habit: Parents narrate priorities (“I’ll finish this report first, then play a game with you.”).
  • Teach time estimation: Ask, “How long will that take?” Use timers to build awareness and focus.
  • Use brief planning meetings: 2–3 minute nightly check‑ins to review priorities and celebrate progress.
  • Problem‑solve together: If priorities aren’t happening, ask what’s getting in the way and plan adjustments (shorter work chunks, quieter space).
  • Celebrate follow‑through: Praise effort and specific choices (“I noticed you started homework before your game — great planning!”).

Families, we are excited to kick off Multnomah’s Annual Science Fair! Participating in a science fair gives children a fun, hands-on way to explore their curiosity and build confidence. It helps them practice asking questions, planning experiments, and explaining their ideas. These skills boost critical thinking and communication. Science fairs also encourage perseverance as students try, revise, and improve their projects, and they create opportunities for positive parent/child teamwork and pride. Finally, seeing their work displayed and celebrated with classmates can spark a lasting love of learning and science. So if it's optional for your student, I strongly encourage you to participate anyways! All projects will be showcased in the MPR and on exhibit for Science Night on March 19th.
