The teachers are back in their classrooms and excited to welcome the students next Wednesday!
The Franklin Academy Students are Known, Loved and Supported!
First Grade teachers, Danielle and Marie, met with the Second Grade teachers, Chris and Hannah, yesterday. The focus of their meeting was to pass on knowledge and tips for each student who will be moving up to 2nd grade this year. Likes, interests, learning styles, social and emotional needs of each student are passed on year to year. The teachers go the extra mile to create a classroom environment that sets up each student for success.
Meetings like this are happening all over campus this week. Enjoy some photos of all the hard work and preparation the teachers and staff are doing as they look forward to in-person learning next week!
We love our teachers!
A Warm Welcome to our New Teachers!
Joanne TeVelde - Pre-K (4 Year Old Program, 5 Days a Week)
She was born in Abbotsford, B.C Canada but raised in Sumas Washington. She went to the same high school as both her parents. Some of her favorite past times growing up were the following activities: playing sports, riding horses, and showing dairy cows. After high school, she became a nanny for a military family. She worked for that same family for seven and a half years raising their two children starting when the first was only three months old.
When she’s not working with children, she enjoys riding her horse, playing softball, and working with the draft horses that you see every year at the Lynden Fair.
Nickie Rail - Kindergarten
Nickie Rail was born and raised in San Diego, CA. She attended California State University San Marcos where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education with a Minor in Visual and Performing Arts.
She received her Teaching Credential from CSUSM and her Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Concordia University, Irvine. She taught for 12 years in the Vista Unified School District in Southern California in grades Kindergarten through Fourth grade. Since moving to Bellingham in 2018, Nickie has worked as a Reading Intervention Specialist in Bellingham Public Schools as well as a substitute in BPS and at Franklin Academy.
She absolutely loves teaching and believes that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As a teacher, she strives to be creative, enthusiastic, motivated, and inspired to help make connections between the content and her students’ lives.
Nickie lives in Birchwood with her husband and two elementary aged kids. She really enjoys exploring the beautiful nature the Pacific Northwest has to offer. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, swimming, reading, and cooking.
A favorite saying: “A teacher affects eternity; s/he can never tell where his/her influence stops.” – Henry Adams
Alex Pearman-Gillman - 1st Grade
Alex Pearman-Gillman grew up in Spokane and moved to Seattle after graduating from Washington State University with her Bachelors in English Rhetoric. After traveling and some time spent working as a nanny Alexandria obtained her Masters in Teaching in Elementary Education from Northwest University. She started her teaching career in Renton and taught Kindergarten there for two years. Alexandria then moved to Seattle Public Schools where she taught Kindergarten at an international school for the past five years. She is very excited to be a part of The Franklin Academy community.
As an educator, Alex believes in the power and importance of student voice. She values community and loves to build strong partnerships with her students and their families. Alexandria firmly believes in creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. She is passionate about helping students gain a strong sense of self while they explore and learn from the world around them.
When she is not teaching, Alex loves to push herself outside her comfort zone with mountain biking and trail running. As a water loving soul she loves swimming, paddle boarding, and kayaking.
A favorite saying: “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.” –Malala Yousafzai
Tawny Johnson - Preschool (3 Year Old Program, 3 Days a Week)
Tawny was born and raised in Washington state. She moved to Bellingham, Washington in 2017 to pursue her education through Western Washington University.
Tawny has always taken an interest in education and working with children. She participated in WWU’s Compass to Campus program, and has a background working as an Assistant Teacher and Substitute Para-Educator.
Tawny believes in fostering a creative, fun, and organized learning environment for her students. She is always encouraging them to reach their goals and build their confidence to learn every day.
In her free time, Tawny enjoys spending time with her cat Flax, taking walks at local parks, baking treats for loved ones, and trying out local restaurants.
One of her favorite sayings:
“What could be more important than a little something to eat?” -Winnie the Pooh
Jared McMinn - Middle School Math/Economics/Science Research Teacher and Ferlin House Advisor
Jared McMinn grew up on the Olympic Peninsula in Sequim. After graduating high school, he was hired at the Boys and Girls Club. It was here that his passion for working with children was realized. He went on to receive his teaching certification and a degree in Elementary Education (K-8) from Western Washington University in 2019. Jared spent the last two school years primarily substituting for Bellingham School District middle schools while also teaching electives at Franklin Academy in 2020. He is ecstatic to be welcomed into a community that truly understands the value of education and the potential of our youth.
When he is not teaching, Jared serves as a football coach for Bellingham High School. Even though his position as a coach is time-consuming, he still finds time to enjoy the outdoors via hiking, camping, and fishing.
A favorite saying is: “smooth seas don’t make strong sailors”.
Danialle Segebart - Spanish Specialist (Preschool - 3rd Grade) and Ershig Advisor
Danialle Segebart grew up in a small town in Indiana that is known for its mineral water and being the hometown of a famous basketball coach, John R Wooden.
During her freshman year of high school, she received the opportunity to mentor elementary students and teach them core values. It was during this experience that she discovered a passion for teaching, which was later solidified during her student teaching experiences at Franklin College.
Her Spanish professors inspired her to go beyond the required two semesters of foreign language. With each class, she fell more in love with the language and culture. As a result, she later studied abroad in Costa Rica and has held onto a passion for Spanish ever since.
Danialle and her husband moved to Bellingham in the spring of 2017 when he was offered a job as the men’s assistant soccer coach at Western Washington University. Since then, she has been working as a teacher and Assistant Director at Sylvan Learning Center.
She is elated to have a classroom of her own and for the opportunity to introduce Spanish to the Franklin students. One of her main goals is to show students how much fun learning a foreign language can be, which can hopefully instill a foundational passion for Spanish that they can build on.
A few of her favorite sayings:
“Viajar es la única cosa que compras te hace más rico” –Unknown
“For what it’s worth: It’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Your Student Can Ring in the New School Year! Last Chance to Purchase Raffle Tickets!
Did you know there is a huge bell in the tower at Markell Hall? Sam and Yanolla Boulos, generously donated the bell when Markell Hall was built. Very few students have had the chance to ring the bell, and now you have a chance at ringing it too.
The Franklin Academy's Raffle - Ringing in the School Year - will help support the Annual Fund. Each year the Annual Fund and the Auction help support the school. Tuition covers about 65% of the cost to educate each student so the Annual Fund and Auction make up that difference.
Each raffle ticket is $20 and we will draw the winning number on Monday, August 30th 1:00 PM.
We will have your student ring the bell at 9:00AM once all students are in their classrooms. (If you have more than one child and your name is pulled you may have the siblings pull the rope to ring the bell together.)
