Dear Flint Community Schools Families and Friends,

As we begin this new school year, I am filled with pride and excitement for the journey ahead. It is an honor to serve as the superintendent of this incredible community, and I am committed to making sure Flint Community Schools remains a place where excellence thrives and every scholar has the opportunity to succeed.

This year, our work will be guided by our four key pillars:

Reenergizing the Pride
– Flint Community Schools has a long history of strength, resilience, and pride. Together, we will renew that pride by celebrating our scholars, our achievements, and our community. Our schools will be places of inspiration and excitement where scholars are motivated to excel.

Renovating the Plans – Achieving excellence requires growth and adaptation. We are committed to refining our strategies, strengthening our programs, and ensuring that every scholar has the tools they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Rebuilding the Possibilities – The world is changing, and new opportunities are opening every day. Whether through academics, extracurriculars, or career readiness initiatives, we are committed to helping scholars explore and pursue every possibility.

Repurposing for a Brighter Future – Our mission goes beyond education. We are preparing our scholars for a future full of promise by reimagining our resources, facilities, and practices to equip them for success in an ever-evolving world.

At the heart of our mission is the unwavering belief that our scholars’ academic success, safety, and well-being are our top priorities. We want every scholar to experience an awesome year of growth, learning, and opportunity.

As we cheer on our athletes this year, I want to remind them — and all of us — that they are scholars first. We celebrate their dedication on the field and in the classroom, and we are proud to stand with them as they balance both pursuits.

Together, we will create a school year full of achievements, both big and small. I am excited to see what we will accomplish as a community, and I look forward to all the possibilities this year holds.

Let’s make this a year to remember, filled with pride, purpose, and progress.

Brownell-Holmes STEM Academy Campus Ribbon Cutting Slideshow

On September 17, 2025, Flint Community Schools proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Brownell-Holmes STEM Academy Campus—the district’s first new build in more than 50 years. This milestone reflects a renewed commitment to innovation, student success, and the future of Flint’s children.

Students, families, staff, alumni, and community partners gathered alongside district leaders and local officials to honor this transformational addition to the Brownell STEM Academy and Holmes STEM Middle School Academy. Designed through a community co-design process, the project reflects the voices of parents, scholars, staff, and neighbors—ensuring the campus is truly built with and for the community.

Campus Highlights:

  • Early Childhood Center – Serving children from 6 weeks to 5 years with programs such as Head Start, Early Head Start, Early Childhood Special Education, and Great Start Readiness.

  • Modernized Classrooms & Facilities – Renovations supported by more than $26 million in federal ESSER funding, improving safety, HVAC systems, roofing, and classroom design.

  • Athletic & Recreational Spaces – A new competition track, football and soccer fields, walking paths, two playgrounds designed by scholars, and new basketball and pickleball courts.

  • The Cube @ Brownell-Holmes – A 5,000-square-foot hub for flexible learning during the day and community programs, meetings, and events after school.

In total, more than $40 million in combined public and private investment—including over $14 million from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation—made this vision possible. Together, these contributions have transformed two school buildings into a community-centered STEM campus serving learners of all ages.

The Brownell-Holmes STEM Academy Campus is more than a renovation. It is a reimagining of what schools can mean for scholars, families, and neighborhoods—an investment in lifelong learning, community pride, and opportunities that will ripple across generations.

Flint Community Schools families, staff, and community members came together to kick off the 2025–26 school year with a Back to School Celebration filled with fun, excitement, and school spirit. The event was held on Saturday, September 13th at Houston Stadium and welcomed hundreds of families, as we celebrated the return to learning and the bright year ahead for Flint Community Schools scholars.

The celebration offered something for everyone — free food, fun giveaways, bounce houses, and even a petting zoo. Families also enjoyed music, games, and resources designed to support a strong start to the school year. Scholars had the chance to reunite with friends and teachers while parents connected with staff and community partners who are dedicated to supporting their children’s success.

Staying Healthy This School Year Staying Healthy This School Year

This is the time of year when many different contagious illnesses begin to spread in our community. At Flint Community Schools, we are committed to promoting success and wellness in every aspect of life for our scholars and their families. We are taking steps to keep our scholars and staff safe and healthy during this season of increased illness.

Here are some simple ways to try to stay healthy:

  • Wash your hands often
  • Get immunized, if possible
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat a well-balanced diet
  • Cover your cough
  • Stay home if you notice any new or worsening symptoms

For more guidance on when to stay home, please see this resource: When to Stay Home

Did you know? Flint Community Schools has a state-funded School Wellness Program that provides every school with a registered nurse. With proper consent forms on file, these nurses can help with assessing, treating, and testing for illnesses such as COVID or flu. To ensure your scholar can access these services during the school day, please contact your scholars' school or visit the Health Services page at www.flintschools.org.

Together, we can keep our schools safe, strong, and healthy!

Local watershed information, activities, and volunteer opportunities for district staff

District staff have access to a variety of resources and engagement opportunities centered around local watershed education and conservation. These include informational materials about the region’s watershed systems, the importance of protecting water quality, and how everyday actions can impact local waterways. Staff are encouraged to participate in hands-on activities such as stream clean-ups, water testing, and storm drain labeling, which promote environmental stewardship and support student learning. Additionally, a range of volunteer opportunities are available through partnerships with local environmental organizations, offering meaningful ways for staff to contribute to sustainability efforts within the community.

Additionally, participation in the watershed survey would be greatly appreciated.
