Prioritize Attendance

Families play a key role in making sure students access learning opportunities and understand why attendance is so important for success in school. If students miss more than an average of two days per month of school, they are missing valuable instructional time. This is one reason we strongly encourage families to plan vacations during holidays and breaks. Here are some tips for supporting regular attendance at school:

For Elementary Families

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before school.
  • Develop contingency plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor or another parent.
  • Schedule dental and medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to their teacher, counselor or principal about how to make them feel more comfortable and excited about learning.

Keep Your Child Engaged

  • Ask your student if they feel engaged in their classes. Ask if they feel safe and welcome in their school.
  • Make sure they aren’t missing classes because of challenges with behavioral issues or school discipline policies. If so, contact your student's counselor to discuss.
  • Monitor academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors, if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
  • Stay on top of their social contacts. Students without many friends can feel isolated.
  • Notice and support them if they’re showing signs of anxiety.

Address Your Child's Anxiety

If your child is suffering from anxiety, they're not alone. In most situations, anxiety is normal and temporary. It becomes a concern if it persists and affects relationships with family, peers and teachers; contributes to academic challenges; and leads to school avoidance/refusal. Addressing anxiety is important for a child’s overall well-being, not just attendance.

Here are some tips to help your child get through these challenges and return to school:

  • Don't punish your child for refusing to go to school, as this can make the situation worse.
  • If possible, avoid letting your child stay home. Though staying home from school may provide short-term relief for your child, continued absence from school will lead to a feeling of being disconnected from classmates and teachers, cause your child to fall behind academically and make it harder for them to return.
  • Speak with your child. Try to understand what's specifically bothering them.
  • Make it clear that you're there to help and you believe they can face their fears and overcome the problem.
  • Talk with the school nurse, counselor, social worker and/or psychologist about your student’s challenges, identify possible solutions and develop a plan.

Students are expected to follow these rules to support a safe and pleasant ride for all who take the bus. Please help to make sure your student understands that all of the bus rules must be followed at all times because violation of any of these rules could result in suspension from the bus.

Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 581-053-0010) govern conduct for students riding the school bus.

They include:

1. Pupils being transported are under authority of the bus driver.

2. Fighting, wrestling, or boisterous activity is prohibited on the bus.

3. Pupils shall use the emergency exit only in case of emergency.

4. Pupils shall be on time for the bus both morning and evening.

5. Pupils shall not bring firearms, weapons, or other potentially hazardous material on

the bus.

6. Pupils shall not bring animals, except approved assistance guide animals on the bus.

7. Pupils shall remain seated while bus is in motion.

8. Pupils may be assigned seats by the bus driver.

9. When necessary to cross the road, pupils shall cross in front of the bus or as instructed by

the bus driver.

10. Pupils shall not extend their hands, arms, or body parts through bus windows.

11. Pupils shall have written permission to leave the bus other than at home or school.

12. Pupils shall converse in normal tones; loud or vulgar language is prohibited.

13. Pupils shall not open or close windows without permission of driver.

14. Pupils shall keep the bus clean and must refrain from damaging it.

15. Pupils shall be courteous to the driver, to fellow pupils, and passersby.

16. Pupils who refuse to obey promptly the directions of the driver or refuse to obey

regulations may forfeit their privilege to ride buses.

Our classes are wrapping up their learning on caring and it’s been so wonderful to see our students practicing kindness, noticing each other’s needs, and looking for ways to help. Even though we’re finishing up this unit, caring is something we’ll keep encouraging and talking about all year long.

After winter break, we’ll shift our Kindness in the Classroom focus to inclusiveness. Students will dive into what it means to include others, make others feel welcomed, valued, and part of the group. It will be exciting and fun to explore this together as a school community.

♥️ SEL Strategy To Try at Home: Rose, Thorn and Seed ♥️

Here’s how it works…

Everyone in the family shares a rose (the best or happiest part of their day), a thorn (something that was tough, frustrating, or didn’t go as planned), and a seed (something they’re looking forward to or hoping to grow tomorrow).

The purpose of this routine is to help kids practice naming their feelings, reflecting on their experiences, and connecting with the people who care about them most. You can have these conversations on the go, at the dinner table, before bed…really anytime! The great thing is, it’s quick and meaningful and it gives you a peek into how everyone is feeling and can help build awareness, empathy and compassion for others.

Hello Bonny Slope Families.

I am excited to share that the Beaverton High School Health Careers Program has selected Bonny Slope Elementary as a “Teddy Bear Clinic” site! Our “clinic” is scheduled to occur in April.

So…What is a Teddy Bear Clinic?? What will this look like and what does it mean??

This is a very fun, educational and engaging time offered to our kindergarten and first grade students. During the “clinic”, each student will receive their own teddy bear. The Health Careers students will use some of their basic patient assessment and first aid skills as they interact with our younger kids in a nurturing role. On the flipside, our elementary students (kinder and 1st grade) will learn about basic healthcare practices and first aid in a positive and interactive way. Our hope is that this fun and engaging activity will reduce anxiety about visiting doctors or clinics. This is also a great way for young students to create stories and situations/injuries for their teddy bears, prompting creativity and storytelling.

Common stations include:

  • Check in (teddy bears will be given a patient ID band)

  • Teddyologists (patient/teddy bear assessment)

  • Imaging (for suspected broken bones and possible need for casting)

  • Dental

Significantly, the teddy bears will be given AT NO COST to our students and their families. This program is funded by Health Careers student fundraising and generous donations to the Health Careers Program. If you would like to donate, please consider doing so through the Beaverton Education Foundation (BEF) website: Donate here!

With joy,

Nurse Amelia

Winter Walking Tips

Don’t let the cold weather keep you inside all season! Time spent being active outside can boost mood and mental health and keep kids focused on learning better. With some simple preparation, your children can still be active and stay safe and warm during our winter months.

  • Wear a raincoat or poncho, and/or carry an umbrella.
  • Carry a plastic bag to store wet gear during the day.
  • Wear gloves and waterproof shoes. Carry (or store at school) extra shoes and socks to change into.
  • Find an under-cover area to park your bike if possible. If not, bring a plastic bag to cover the seat. We also have bike seat covers if any parent groups would like to provide some at the school for children riding bikes this winter.
  • Wear reflective gear and/or bright colors and use a light on your bicycle.
  • Only walk or bike in the rain if you’re comfortable, as roads are slick and visibility may be reduced. Always remember to stop at the curb or edge of the street, look in all directions before crossing and keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing.
