New City of San Marcos Ordinance New City of San Marcos Ordinance

The City of San Marcos recently took an important step to enhance community safety by approving a new ordinance that prohibits children under 12 from operating e-bikes. This effort is part of the City’s new Ride Right campaign, which focuses on rider safety and community awareness. While the ordinance takes effect immediately, the City will focus on education and outreach before enforcement begins in February.

San Marcos Unified is partnering with the City of San Marcos, the Sheriff’s Department, and parent groups to share e-bike safety information and host upcoming Ride Right Pop-Up events at our middle and high schools. These events will provide students and families with practical safety tips and resources to help everyone ride responsibly. Once we have more information about when these events will take place, we will share details with you.

If you have questions about the new ordinance or the City’s Ride Right campaign, please contact City staff via email at cityhall@san-marcos.net or via phone at 760-744-1050. For questions about obtaining an SMUSD e-bike permit for students (ages 12 and older) who plan to ride an e-bike to school, please reach out to our school site.

Thank you for helping keep our students and community safe on the road.

The Power of a Healthy Breakfast: FREE BREAKFAST at school EVERY DAY!

A nutritious breakfast fuels the brain, boosts focus, and helps students start the day ready to learn! Studies show that students who eat a balanced breakfast have better memory, attention, and mood throughout the morning. Skipping breakfast can lead to lower energy, slower thinking, and irritability — especially during those important first periods of the day.

Encourage your middle schooler to grab a quick, brain-fueling start like:

  • Whole-grain toast with peanut butter and banana slices

  • Greek yogurt with berries and granola

  • Oatmeal topped with nuts or fruit

  • A breakfast burrito with eggs, cheese, and veggies

  • A smoothie made with milk, fruit, and spinach

This month, students will be learning in Homeroom about how nutrition helps the brain—and how small changes, like a healthy breakfast, can make a big difference in their focus and success at school.

“American Academy of Pediatrics – Breakfast for Learning: Why the Morning Meal Matters” — This article explains how children who eat breakfast tend to have better memory, attention, and test scores.

Reminder: Stay Safe and Be Aware of Your Surroundings

As daylight hours grow shorter, we want to remind our students and families to stay safe and aware of their surroundings when walking to and from school or in the community.

Please take a moment to review the following safety reminders with your child:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions such as cell phones or headphones.

  • Walk with friends or in groups whenever possible.

  • If you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable, go to a nearby business, school, or area where there are other people.

  • Report any concerning behavior or situation to a trusted adult or local law enforcement.

Together, we can help keep our students and community safe. Thank you for taking the time to reinforce these important safety habits with your child.

Community Resources for Families Community Resources for Families

We understand that the ongoing federal government shutdown may be creating uncertainty or hardship for some families in our community. To help ensure every family has access to the support they need, we’re sharing a helpful list of local resources compiled by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and 211 San Diego.

These resources include information about food assistance, medical and mental health services, and more available to San Diego residents during this time and beyond. Click here to view the resource document.
