HES Shark Scoop
October 6, 2023

May 16, 2025
Dear HES Caregivers,
What a joyful and exciting season it is here at Harwich Elementary School! As we head into the final stretch of the school year, our Sharks are diving into field trips, performances, and culminating projects with such enthusiasm. It’s a wonderful time to be part of this learning community.
It has been a pleasure to welcome so many of you into the building this week for our beloved Book Fair. This event is always a highlight for our students and staff, and it’s made even more special when we get to share it with our families. Thank you for being part of it!
This week, our 4th graders completed the mathematics portion of MCAS. We were inspired to hear how confident many of them felt about their performance. They’ve been working hard all year, and this was a great opportunity for them to demonstrate all they’ve learned. Next week, we’ll complete make-up sessions for any 3rd and 4th grade students who missed part of the math assessment.
As always, I’m here to support you and your child. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Wishing you all a restful and happy weekend!
Warm regards,
Christie
Field Day Coordinators & Donations Needed – June 12
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to announce that our annual Field Day will be held on Wednesday, June 12! This fun-filled day is a highlight of the school year, giving students a chance to enjoy outdoor games, team activities, and lots of school spirit.
To make Field Day a success, we need your help! We are looking for:
1. Field Day Captains and volunteers -to set up stations, help organize “day of” volunteers, and
cleanup. Captains will meet with me prior to 6/12 to understand how activities should be run to ensure fun and safety!
Volunteers- Help run activities for a full day of fun!
2. To ensure the success of this event, we are seeking help to purchase equipment for the activities. An Amazon wish list was created, simply chose an item (s) you would like to donate.
Your generous contribution will directly impact the experience of our students and help create a memorable day for all involved. Purchases should be made by June 6th and can be delivered to the school or brought in by your student.
Thank you in advance for your support and for helping us create a memorable day for our students!
Warm regards,
Marcus De La Vega
Garden Club Updates
This Thursday was an incredible day in the HES Courtyard Garden! The rain stopped just in time for our annual spring clean up. All hands were on deck as students, staff, family members, and visitors joined together to help make our garden a spectacular place to learn and grow for another season. We would like to send an extra special thank you to the garden club families of Eventide Landscaping & Irrigation, Julia Maker, Jake Nickerson, and Grandpa Maker, who very generously offered their professional services, and taught our students valuable gardening and landscaping skills. They also brought the most beautiful mulch, and helped us plant more plants to aid with weed control. Christine Twombly, who was in the group that started the garden many years ago, visited and jumped right in to help. Thank you to Girl Scout Troop 77477 too. They planted gorgeous flowers in the tall bed and under our weeping cherry tree last week. To all the organizations, families, and friends that support us with plants, supplies, or showing up, we thank you and appreciate you!!
Mary Anne Kinum, Garden Club of Harwich, Monomoy Regional School District, Agway of Cape Cod, Hyannis Country Garden, Cameron Bonsey of Coast of Maine Organic Products and the Growing Good Program, Rotary Club Of Osterville-Mashpee, Kathy Arthur, Diane Digennaro, Girl Scout Troop 77477, and Harwich Elementary PTO, and all of the Garden Club families.

Call the Attendance Line If Your Shark Is Absent
Per the handbook, if your child is unable to attend school, please enter the absence in PickUp Patrol and/or call our designated attendance line, 617-848-0115, as early as possible. Soon after arrival, our office staff begins to call the caregivers of absent students if we haven't already heard from them. This is important, as we want to ensure that all students are safe. Your phone message with the reason for the absence is all we need. While an email to the teacher is helpful, it sometimes doesn't make its way to the office staff. Thank you for your help!
