A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello GHMS families!

Please join us for our GHMS Back to School Night on Thursday, September 24. Unlike Cruise the Halls, Back to School Night is a structured informational program where families can meet teachers and learn more about grading, Schoology, curriculum, communication, and what to expect throughout the school year.

We will be following a rotation schedule for the night. Starting with 6th grade families in the gym. Please enter through the gym doors and begin with the admin team presentation. 7th- and 8th-grade families will start in the PODs with the Team. Please enter through the main door entrance and go to your student's POD. For families with multiple students at GHMS, we recommend you attend the teacher POD sessions and skip the admin team presentation in the gym. See below for a full schedule for the night.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions.

PowerSchool Tip

Grades are being entered in PowerSchool as we are about halfway through the marking period. One new feature this year in PowerSchool is the ability for teachers to message caregivers directly through the platform. To make sure you are getting grade updates and teacher messages.

  1. Make sure all contact information is up to date in PowerSchool
  2. Change settings in your phone to enable PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

Student Planner

One of our main goals for our learning community this year is to help our students grow into more independent learners by intentionally teaching them the skills they need to manage their time, responsibilities, and learning. One of the tools we will use every day to build these executive functioning skills is the 26-27 student planner. Students are expected to use their planner every day in every class. We encourage families to make the planner part of your regular routine at home, too.

Students will use their planners to:

  • Record assignments, projects, tests, and other important deadlines.

  • Keep track of upcoming responsibilities.

  • Monitor their own progress and identify what needs their attention.

  • Record failing grades and missing assignments during Advisory each Wednesday.

  • Develop the habit of checking what they need to accomplish rather than relying on an adult to remind them.

Middle school is an important time for students to develop independence. Executive functioning skills help students:

  • Plan and prioritize: Determine what needs to be done first and manage multiple responsibilities.

  • Organize: Keep track of assignments, materials, deadlines, and commitments.

  • Monitor themselves: Recognize when they are missing work or struggling and take action.

  • Build independence: Gradually take ownership of their learning and responsibilities.

We recognize how important these skills are and that they require practice, consistency, feedback, and support, which is why we are intentionally building them into the school day.

Please consider asking your student to show you their planner regularly. Rather than simply asking, "Do you have homework?", try questions such as:

  • "What is coming up this week?"
  • "What projects or tests do you need to prepare for?"
  • "Is there anything in your planner that you need help getting organized?"

Schoology will continue to be an important resource, and teachers will post assignments and homework there. However, we are intentionally asking students to take an active role in tracking their own learning rather than relying solely on Schoology, teachers, or parents to tell them what they need to do.
