Husky Happenings Week of October 5, 2026

Hi Families,

Just a couple of quick reminders. Picture retakes are November 13. If your child was ill and didn't get their picture taken, you can use the same picture form for retakes. When you receive the pictures, if you don't like them, have your child take them back to school on retake day. They will give them to Lifetouch and get their picture taken again.

October 21 is a half day of school for students as teachers have required PD in the afternoon. The Before School Program is open on half day mornings as usual for those registered. On half days, breakfast is served but not lunch and dismissal is at 12:25. Anyone picking up your child at school that day needs to be on the emergency form so there is time to do that. You can add people through the portal and if you have trouble, let us know. Busses will arrive to school as usual and begin picking up students for the ride home at 12:25.

I am attaching the Hopkins Hill Matrix that clarifies what respectful, responsible, and safe looks like in each area of the school. Teachers review this with children the first week of school and most take their students on a matrix walk to discuss each area of the building. Sometimes, we have a day when we focus on a particular area that we need to tighten up. Using the matrix is part of the PBIS - Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports - system. Please click the link for more information. The premise is that schools have students who come to school with a variety of expectations. In a school with over 300 students, it would be nearly impossible to accomplish anything with that number of students each going in a different direction. To get everyone on the same page, PBIS schools create a matrix of expectations of what the expectations look and sound like at school and then directly teach those expectations so children understand what they have to do. At HH, we use respectful, responsible, and safe. Other schools may use something different. Here are two typical things we will say to students: "Here at Hopkins Hill, we walk quietly in the hall so we don't disturb the instruction of others. Here is what quiet walking looks and sounds like." We take a statement from the matrix, explain the reason for the expectation, and demonstrate if applicable. The demonstration usually happens when the teachers take the children for a matrix walk or have a focus day. The other thing we tell students is that safety comes first. The adults will often say, 'It is my job to keep you safe, and your job to help me. You can do that by keeping your hands to yourself", for example. This week during morning announcements we will review a different matrix expectation. When we catch someone following the expectation, we hand out "Pawbucks" so the children know that we know they are following the expectations. The matrix is below for your reference. We also have an at home matrix and at home pawbucks that you can adapt to your home expectations. If you have an interest in those, let me or your child's teacher know and we can get an editable copy to you.

Don't forget to send in the good deeds that your children are doing at home so we can put them on our Good Deeds Tree. We are also adding the good deeds done at school. If you need more of the templates, let your child's teacher know or use the templates from this link: LEAF Templates. Add your child's name, grade, homeroom and a sentence describing the good deed.

Don't forget to reach out to me, Nurse Deb, or Mrs. Petrarca if you require HH Food pantry assistance. All inquiries are confidential. Please see the section below

Coventry Public Schools Parent Corner:

On the district web page (www.coventryschools.net) you will find a Parent Corner Page that provides information about things like registration, Title I, lunch information, Parent Portal tech help, etc. I have linked the page above for your reference.

Policy Corner Policy Corner

In this section we'll feature different district policies or state laws that serve as the basis for a lot of the decisions/rules that schools follow. Generally, the state will pass legislation and the school district will create policy based on that legislation. The district has a policy committee that meets regularly with our superintendents to review new legislation and existing policy to make sure they are aligned. I think the title is linkable if not click here - District Policy Manual to take a look at all of them.

Today the focus is the Field Trip Policy. This is fairly straight forward. Essentially, field trips need to be aligned with one or more areas of the curriculum with the intent of the trip to enhance student understanding of that particular component. Teachers must complete a field trip request form that goes through different layers of administration for approval. Typically the school principal and the superintendent or his designee approve the trip. The form must outline the academic purpose of the trip, the funding source for the trip, and any medical concerns. Nurse Deb also checks these to make sure there aren't any medical conditions that would require a nurse or parent to attend in order to monitor that condition. Once approved, permission slips go home detailing all the information such as footwear, lunch, etc. Students who have not returned a permission slip are unable to attend the trip. We make every effort to reach parents prior to the trip if we notice that the slip has not been returned. The policy requires, at the elementary level, that we have a ratio of 1 adult to every 5 students attending. Parents are often asked to chaperone in order to supplement this number needed. Chaperones must be over 21 years of age and have to have had a BCI within the year. The last piece is that children can't be denied attendance for inability to pay the cost of the trip. Sometimes the venue charges admission and there is a bus cost. Because we have a very generous PTO, they give us money that they have raised through events and fundraisers to offset the cost and we also use Feinstein donations for that purpose. As a full program Title I school, we are sometimes eligible for discounts resulting in costs to students that are very low or non existent. Please let us know if the cost of any field trip presents a financial hardship because we have ways to help. Finally, a question I'm asked is what about fun trips? Hopefully all trips are fun even with a curriculum connection, but grades 5 and 8 are permitted to have one celebratory trip given that they are moving on. Field trips are not required though we encourage all grades to participate in this type of experience. Some choose to have "in house" field trips in which the trip or activity comes to us. And, finally, in accordance with the PED policy, cell phones are not permitted as the trip or event is considered part of the school day.

FOOD SERVICE LINKS Update

Please make sure all free/reduced lunch applications are in by October 1 even if your family qualified last year. If you are direct cert from the state, you should be all set.

The linked title has all of the links above as well as pricing information and menus and I also link menus in my main message above.

Hopkins Hill Food Pantry: Hopkins Hill operates a very active food pantry throughout the school year. As part of this operation, we provide biweekly grocery deliveries from our food pantry supplies to any family that might be having a difficult time. All food pantry inquiries are confidential. You can call me, Nurse Deb, or Ms Petrarca if you are interested. Reach out should any emergency arise and we are prepared to assist or help you find assistance. The first biweekly delivery will go out on September 17 so if you would like to take part, please reach out. The service will continue on a biweekly basis until you reach out to discontinue and is not dependent on lunch status - any of us can run into a difficult period; we are happy to help.

Attendance: School attendance is at the forefront again this year with updates to state legislation. Just to recap, children are considered chronically absent if they are absent 10% or more of the days that school is in session. Illnesses and accidents happen with young children, and those will level out over the year, but it's the "just because" absences that cause a problem. The district attendance policy also requires that we track tardies - more on that in the Policy Section next week. We will begin reporting actual data when the RIDE Attendance Tool is up and running for the new school year.

Notes From Nurse Deb Notes From Nurse Deb

Just a reminder that any medications that need to be administered by Nurse Deb at school need a doctor's order. Please reach out to Nurse Deb if you have questions about back to school medications.
