Behind the Scenes of Snow Day Decisions
The Wisconsin statewide average for December snowfall is 12.6 inches, with our area typically seeing about 11 inches. It seems we may have already reached that amount—and we still have a lot of December left!
I am often asked how we decide whether to hold school, delay by two hours, or cancel altogether, and the honest answer is… it depends. Variables include when the snow starts and stops, wind conditions, whether the snow is light or heavy, the presence of ice, temperature, and more. Our conversations begin around 4:00–4:30 a.m. with a team that includes our Maintenance Director, the bus company, nearby school districts, and me. We review available data, assess road and weather conditions firsthand, and then make our best educated decision—because, unfortunately, there is no crystal ball.
Once a decision is made, we share it through text blasts (for those who have opted in), our district Facebook page, and local radio and news stations. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep students and staff safe while minimizing disruptions to learning.
