Message from Principal Wadkins Message from Principal Wadkins

Dear Cleveland Families,

Thank you all for coming out for Back to School Night last Wednesday. I loved seeing the gym bleachers full with parents. A big thank you to Gary Riler, Band Director, and the fabulous pep band for providing the musical entertainment.

One thing I know about the Cleveland community is that we show up. Back to School Night was just one example. Attendance at our sporting events has been phenomenal. Last Friday’s football game saw an almost full capacity at the stadium. It was great to see our Mandarin students hosting a fund raiser there in addition to our football families selling gear and chili. Our youth players joined as well as our feeder band students. With our middle school musicians combined with our pep band, we had over 200 band students in the stands filling the stadium with rousing music. Our Claim a Brick event saw lines down SE Franklin St. as we handed out three pallets worth of bricks from the north elevation of the building. We handed out every available brick. Please see the link below for a video of the event.

Claim a Brick Video

I hope you can join us this week on Wednesday in the gym for the girls volleyball Dig Pink fundraiser that supports breast cancer research. Our band is hosting the annual Band Play-A-Thon on Friday night which is a big fundraiser for them.

Finally, as we are settling into the first quarter, I want to highlight the importance of attendance. As a school district as well as a school, we are actively working on improving the percentage of regular attenders. Our state report card indicates that for the school year 2025-26, 69% of our students had attendance rates of 90% or above. Our measurement of regular attendance exceeded the state average by one percent. We want to improve the number of regular attenders with intentional work centered on a sense of belonging for students as well as relevant and engaging work in all of our classes. You can find your student’s attendance in ParentVUE. If you are a parent interested in being more involved with our school improvement work, please consider joining the Site Council. Please email me to learn more.

We are approaching the end of our first month of school. Our school's attendance goal is for students to be present 90% or higher; our current attendance rate is at 92.93%, with 81.27% of students attending at an acceptable rate. (FYI: Excused absences from families still affect their students' attendance rate.)

If you would like to address any concerns regarding your students' attendance, please let us know. The staff is working on taking accurate attendance, and if you see a SKP or LAT in your students' attendance, they have missed important instructional time.

Lovely to meet you!

It was so nice to meet many of you in person over the past few weeks at either the 9th grade Family Night or Back to School Night. I hope that you are feeling the same positivity and energy that is prevalent on our new (to us) campus - it is so exciting to be in a building that was MEANT to be a high school and to see students taking advantage of all that that offers to them.

IB Information meetings (virtual)

Curious about the IB program? Wondering how to support your junior or senior with exam registration? I will be hosting 2 virtual informational meetings to support parents in learning about how students can get the most out of the experience of attending an IB World School.

  • Junior and Senior info meeting: September 30 @ 7 PM - information about IB exams, testing eligibility, testing benefits, and registration process.

  • Freshman and Sophomore info meeting: October 14 @ 7 PM - general information about the International Baccalaureate program at Cleveland and what it offers to your students, as well as considerations for future course choices.

Save the date!

Mark your calendars for the IB Extended Essay Showcase on Wednesday, November 18th. As part of the process of earning their full IB Diploma, the 2027 Senior Diploma candidates have written 4,000 word Extended Essays on individual research topics, and will be transforming them into 10-minute presentations in preparation for our Showcase! You can rotate through the session style Showcase and see up to 5 of the 80 TED Talk-like presentations. This is the culminating event for these hardworking students, so please plan to join us to celebrate our full Diploma candidates as they present on their exciting and individual research!!

Until then, please reach out with any questions,
