New Curriculum? What Next?
Training for Big Ideas
We have already set training dates for Big Ideas. Please try to attend the June sessions (if possible) to allow teachers new to the district to have the late July training dates. You only need to attend ONE session.
SPED teachers: The session will be an additional 30 minutes for SPED teachers so that trainers can specifically address the particular needs you have with teaching students on multiple grade levels in the same class period. Please attend for the grade band you teach the MOST. You do not have to attend multiple sessions.
Please register below. Session sizes will be limited to 35 participants.
Online Access
We will have the demo access if you would like to start examining, planning, and learning our new platform. We will keep the demo accounts live until October to help with teachers hired after the start of school.Big Ideas has specific log-in accounts for each teacher. Check the link below for information. Tabs for each school at at the bottom. Big Ideas Logins
Please take some time to watch the overview to help yourself get acquainted with the new platform.
When we will have our REAL accounts? Emily Monroe is hard at work on that, and we should have everyone rostered by the end of the year so you have time to work with your account over the summer.
Coordinator Day 24-25
Coordinator Day
Next year's coordinator day will look a bit different. Due to the limited number of PD days we have before school starts, each coordinator will be setting up meetings in July - August to review curriculum for 24-25. We are super excited to give our day for Leader in Me, as we know this will benefit our students, teachers, and the community. Thank you in advance for your flexibility.
The zoom schedule is below. All meetings are the same, based on grade spans/subject areas, please pick the date/time that works best for you. I will still be completing first quarter site visits for one-on-one conversations.

Time to Recycle PASS
PASS
PASS used to be our version of the Oklahoma Academic Standards. However, PASS stopped being our standards in 2016. Our standards have changed significantly since then, and those resources don't align with our new standards.
I know some of you still have some resources that you love, but if the resource is listed as PASS aligned, it's time to retire that resource. If you have any resources that say PASS, it's time to recycle.
Math Stations
How Do I Organize It All?
First, there is no ONE way to organize your stations. Whatever works effectively with your teaching style and classroom personality is what you use. Below I have listed some options that I have seen, used, or found about station organization.
Stations can be a daily part of your math routine (incorporated with RTI), and a great way to review those skills that just need practice time.
Folders Are Your Friend
Hanging Files
Tubs, Tubs, and More Tubs!
Bins are not required, but they are a great way to visually organize your items so that they can be more easily used when you need them.
PD in your PJs
Online PD
Take a look at the webinars that are available online. Have fun with PD anytime, anywhere. You may not be able to join the live session, but register anyway. You will be sent a recording that you can watch later.

EXPLORING REGULARITY & MATHEMATICAL STRUCTURE WITH PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL MANIPULATIVES
Identifying and exploring regularity and mathematical structures lays the foundation for numerical reasoning and procedural fluency. Math manipulatives enhance this practice by providing concrete and visual representations of abstract concepts.
Family Math Games - Provided by Jennifer Seitsinger
Help Your Neighbor
Playing games are a great way to connect as a family, I love playing dice games with kids because they are quick, easy, and help bring in a little (or a lot) of math.
Dice games are simple fun, great for on-the-go play, and are great for a rainy day when you are stuck inside because it's just too hot!
10 Math Games to Play with Dominoes!
We can keep our math skills fresh and have fun at the same time with a set of dominoes! We can make it basic for younger students by using the 6-dot or increase the difficulty with the 9- or 12-dot dominoes.
10 Games to Play With Uno Cards
If you’ve got a pack of Uno cards in your bag then you’ll never be bored! There are lots of fun games you can play with Uno cards and lots of fun maths games you can play with Uno cards too!
Math Stations
Fact Fluency, Centers, and Stations, Oh MY!
Students need time to become flexible and fluent with math. Centers and stations are the answer!
Kinder - Make Me Ten
Materials:
- Numeral Cards 0-10
- 10 -Frame
- Tiles for 10 Frame
Procedure:
- Student will draw a card from the pile.
- Student will create that number on the 10-frame.
- Student will call out the number needed to make 10.
Ex:
Student pulls a 4.
Student will create 4 on the 10-frame and call out 6 to make 10.
1st Grade - 10 More/Ten Less
Materials:
- 1 – 100 Chart
- 1- 100 cards (index cards work well)

- Each student chooses a color tile to represent them.
- Using the – 100 cards, the student will draw a number from the stack.
- The students will find their number on the 100 chart and find 10 more and 10 less.
- They will put their respective pieces on the 10 more and 10 less.
- The game continues until time is called. Each student will count their pieces.
- Students can stack on top of each other if a number is used more than once or you can make the rule that once it’s covered it is out of play.
1st/2nd - Who Am I?
Materials:
- 1-100 chart (2nd grade option: larger number charts)
- Dry erase markers
- Page protector
Procedure:
- Student A will pick a number from the chart being used and will write that number on a piece of paper.
- This will NOT be shown to anyone else yet.
- Student B will ask a series of Yes/No questions to guess the number.
- Student B will mark out numbers that do not fit the answers until they find the correct answer.
Examples of possible questions:
Is it odd?
Is it even?
Is it in the twenties?
Is it 2 –digits?
Does it have an even number in the tens?
Is it greater than 50?
Multiplication - Tic-Tac-Products (3rd & 4th)
Materials:
- 2 colors of markers (tiles, beans, macaroni, etc.)
- Game Sheet (Factors 0 -10 side and factors 3-12 side)
Procedures:
- Player 1 and Player 2 each select one of the numbers, 1-10 at the bottom of the page and places one of the markers on that addend.
- Player 1 may move only one of factor markers to a different factor. Player 1 then places a marker on the grid covering the product of the two factors.
- Player 2 may move only one factor marker at the bottom of the page, 1-10 . Player 2 makes a new product and covers it on the grid. The markers can be placed on the same numbers, 1-10. For example, two markers on 9 since 9 x 9 = 81.
- Players alternate moving one factor marker at a time and continue placing their markers until a player has marked four products in a row. After the game players should discuss their strategies.
Grid Games (5th & 6th)
- Coordinate Grid Print Out
- Deck of Cards
- Dice (Optional)
- Colored markers for each player
Procedure:
- Shuffle the cards and place them face down in two equal piles.

- Player 2 repeats.
- The first with 3 in a row wins. (Vertical, horizontal, or diagonal)
Options:
- 5th grade: all positive numbers; use quadrant 1 only.
- 6th grade: Black cards are positive, and red are negative; use the full coordinate grid.

Students draw tally marks to show the colors that they landed on. Then, students analyze the data of their tosses.
Jumps to the Facts
Lay out a grid like the one shown that has the answers to whatever set of math flash cards you’re currently working with. (This teacher used masking tape; you could also do sidewalk chalk on the playground.) Two players face off, one on each side of the board. Show the flash card, and kids race to be the first to jump to the correct square with both feet inside the lines. Get all the rules at the link below.
Junkyard Wars
Junkyard Wars
This book was shared by Leesa Kniffen. It is a wonderful find that will bring tears to your eyes about discovering the genius in ALL of our students. Take some time to listen to this one. It's POWERFUL.
In this story based on the author-illustrator's own childhood, Patricia Polacco once again celebrates the power teachers have to help us discover the potential we each hold.
Young Trisha is devastated when she finds out that her class at her new school is known as the junkyard. It is a special class, and she had moved from where she used to live so she wouldn’t be in a special class anymore! But then she meets her teacher, the amazing Mrs. Peterson, and her classmates, an oddly brilliant group of misfit kids, whom the other kids in school call the junkyard kids. Much to her own surprise, it is here in the junkyard that Trisha discovers the true meaning of genius, and that this group of misfits are, in fact, Junkyard Wonders, each and every one of them.
