Chelsea Rotary Installation Ceremony & Educators of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Aaron Jennings on his being sworn in as the Chelsea Rotary President for 2025-2026 and to our three Rotary Educators of the Year, Meg Hawthorne, Rebecca Hernandez-Zamora and Erin Merry! And, thank you to Malik Howshan for being such a wonderful MC for the night!

Elementary Level

Meg Hawthorne, 4th Grade Teacher Hooks Elementary Schools

Meg Hawthorne is currently a 4th grade educator at Hooks Elementary School, with fourteen years of teaching experience. Meg holds her Bachelor's Degree in Educational Psychology with a minor in Neuroscience from Framingham State University and a Master's in Integrated Elementary Education and Special Education from Wheelock University. Meg joined Chelsea Public Schools in 2017. During her time at Hooks Elementary, Meg has served on numerous teams including the Instructional Support Team, Instructional Leadership Team, and Social Emotional Learning Team. She has also worked as a mentor for first year teachers for the past three years, working alongside those new to the Chelsea community, sharing her love of teaching with her mentees. Meg is deeply dedicated to her students and believes in holding all children to the highest of expectations, building relationships with her students and their families, and developing and strengthening inclusive practices across her school. Meg seeks to teach her students that they are capable of anything and that growth and commitment matter above all else. Meg knows all students can succeed with the right support and guidance and hopes to create a lasting positive relationship with each student she has the privilege of working with.

Middle School Level

Rebecca Hernández Zamora, 7th Grade Math Teacher at the Browne Middle School

Rebecca Hernández Zamora is a 7th grade dual language math teacher at Browne Middle School, where she has taught for the past five years. After earning her B.A. from Harvard College and her Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, she joined the Browne community through the Harvard Teacher Fellows program. Rebecca now teaches entirely in Spanish and is passionate about making math accessible, rigorous, and joyful for multilingual learners. In addition to teaching, she serves as the 7th grade team lead and has mentored new educators. She is honored to receive this recognition and proud to be part of the Chelsea Public Schools community.

High School Level

Erin Merry, Chelsea High School Special Education Teacher

Erin Merry is a proud military spouse, mother of four, and passionate educator. As part of a military family, Erin has moved frequently due to her husband’s 25 years of service in the Marine Corps, which has given her the opportunity to teach in a range of schools and communities across the country. Originally from Southern California, Erin graduated from the University of Southern California, where she also played on the women’s water polo team. Though she didn’t initially plan to become a teacher, a college mentor program placed her at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles—an experience that changed everything. There, she discovered her love for teaching and the impact meaningful connections can have on young people. She began her career in second grade general education but quickly realized her heart was with students in special education. Erin returned to school to earn her special education credentials and has since taught in California, Missouri, and now Massachusetts. At Chelsea High School, she serves as a special education teacher and member of the Navigator pilot program, which reflects her deep belief in the power of relationships. Erin centers her work on seeing and supporting every student’s individual story, strengths, and the barriers they face. She recently completed her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership and earned her principal licensure. In the future, she hopes to lead initiatives focused on restorative practices, equity, and inclusive approaches that ensure all students feel valued and connected. With her husband preparing to retire from the Marine Corps, Erin has found a true sense of purpose and belonging in the Chelsea community—a place where she feels deeply rooted and hopes to continue serving for years to come.

Elementary Civic Action Projects

This year, teachers and students in grades K-3 have used the Children Discovering Justice civics curriculum to explore the question, What is justice, and how do I use my voice to advocate for it? "CDJ provides students with the foundational knowledge, skills, and dispositions to be engaged, critical, empathetic leaders."

Our year-long focus on civics culminates with each class working on a Civic Action Project - students choose a justice issue as a class and engage in the advocacy cycle. This year we had some amazing projects! Berkowitz 1st graders in room 112 advocated for Buddy Benches at the playground. Sokolowski 3rd grade students in room 311 focused on the topic of supporting immigrants and created posters around the theme of "Everyone is Welcome," soon to be a public art display at City Hall! Second graders in Hooks room 206 and Berkowitz room 311 learned about the dangers of heat and how animals beat the heat, then used their knowledge to create signs reminding people to stay cool this summer. Their work can be seen at the Chelsea Public Library! Second-graders in Hooks room 311 visited the Greenroots Urban Farm in Chelsea to learn how composting can help the environment. They hope to advocate for composting in the school cafeterias!

Learn more about these and other projects in our Civic Action Project Yearbook.

KELLY SCHOOL UPDATES KELLY SCHOOL UPDATES

Kelly Alumni Engage In Lesson Planning

Around 60 of Elias Carver’s CHS AP US History students learned how to construct an effective lesson plan, then planned and delivered engaging lessons on a variety of topics for Kelly School 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! Kelly kids were engaged and excited to have guest teachers, while the CHS students felt the thrill of a well-planned lesson landing well! We definitely have some future educators in our midst!

This was especially special for the Kelly alumni, who did their former teachers proud!

The sweetest moment was when the APUSH students regrouped in the caf to debrief, but Kelly 1st graders were already there practicing the Kelly School song. It didn’t take much urging for a handful of Kelly alumni to join them for the last verse ... which is fitting as the song ends "To-gether!" As we always tell kids: “Once you’re part of the Kelly School family, you’re ALWAYS part of the Kelly family!”

4th and 5th Grade Moving On Ceremonies

Congratulations to our fourth and fifth grade students! We celebrated our students who will be leaving the Kelly and moving on to middle school! Thank you to our family members and community who attended today's events!

Greek Myths

The 4th grade at Sokolowski has been learning about Greek Myths so Ms. Simon's class in S202 put on a production of Echo and Narcissus. Families and the whole 4th grade was invited to watch students perform after weeks of hard work learning their lines, putting together costumes, and finding props. The acting bug may have bitten a student or two!

Moving On Ceremony!

This past Tuesday, we celebrated the Moving On Ceremony for our fourth-grade students at Sokolowski School. It was a very special moment, full of joy, pride, and emotion. Families, teachers, and students came together to mark the end of an important chapter and the beginning of a new one. We wish our Sharks the best of luck as they begin their journey in middle school!

We care deeply about the community your children grow up in – and we know you do too. That’s why the City of Chelsea is inviting all residents to take part in community workshops to find out what matters most to you right now. We know Chelsea can do better – safer streets, better housing, less traffic and congestion...and more parking. But we can’t make those changes without your input. These workshops will include food, fun, and family-friendly activities, along with real opportunities to tell us what matters most to you and your family. Your feedback helps us build a stronger, more vibrant Chelsea for everyone, especially our kids. To learn more, visit www.chelseama.gov.
