Early Literacy Screening
On Thursday, October 16, families will receive assessment reports from the screening tools described below. The reports will come home in an envelope in your child's backpack. Any student who scored well-below grade level on the Earlybird Learning Early Literacy Screening Tool or the mClass DIBELS8 assessment will also find a letter that describes the interventions that will be put in place to help your child grow in early literacy skills.
Imagine Plus (Earlybird Learning) Early Literacy Screening Tool
This early literacy screening tool was formally named Earlybird Learning and has been renamed Imagine Plus. This assessment is given to all Kindergarten students at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. It is a game-based assessment that measures a students skill level and growth in English across phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle (phonics), oral language fluency, vocabulary, and rapid-naming speed. The assessment identifies areas that could contribute to difficulty with reading. Evidence-based resources are available through Imagine Learning to support whole class and small group instruction to support students with identified areas. Teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators analyze the data from this assessment and identify trends and areas of instructional need.
mClass/DIBELS8
mClass is a platform that provides one-minute fluency probes based on the DIBELS8 (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) assessment. The assessment is available in English and Spanish. It is given in Spanish to all of our Spanish Immersion students in Kindergarten. Students in Spanish Immersion in Grades 1-3 take this assessment in both languages. All of our students in Grade1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 students take this assessment in English. This assessment measures foundational reading skill areas such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle (phonics), and fluency. The data is analyzed by teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators to identify trends and areas of instructional need. mClass provides teachers with evidence-based instructional resources and recommended groupings. Students are given this assessment at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and the end of the year.
MAP Growth Literacy and Math Assessment
MAP Growth ELA (English) and SLA (Spanish) is an online assessment that measures skills in reading and math. At Green Meadow, this benchmark assessment is given to students in Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Students are assessed on their knowledge of literature and informational text, language use, and vocabulary use and functions in relation to the ELA standards. Grade 1 students are also assessed on foundational reading skills. In math, students are assessed in four overarching topics: Number and Operations, Measurement and Data, Geometry, and Operations and Algebraic Thinking. These topics correlate with the Massachusetts State Standards.
MAP Growth is given at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and end of the year. The data is analyzed by teachers, coaches, and administrators to identify instructional needs and guide planning and differentiation. For more information about MAP Growth, please click on this link:

Maynard Public Schools students will continue to take this assessment through Grade 10. Families will received MAP Growth student reports three times a year.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Teachers will be sharing sign-ups for conferences during the last two weeks of October. Our early release day on October 24, is dedicated to these meetings but teachers will post additional time slots throughout the two weeks depending on their availability. Please be sure to sign up for a time to discuss your child's start to the school year. If you would like translation services during your conference and your child's teacher has not already contacted you about setting this up, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible.
Title 1 at Green Meadow
This year Green Meadow has been shifted from a Title 1 School to a Title 1 Target Assist School. This designation is determined based on demographic data and the Title 1 Federal Grant Program. The goal of Title 1 is to ensure a high quality education for every child by providing support to students who need it most.
Title 1 has three primary objectives:
to improve student achievement for all participating children
to improve staff development
to improve parental and community involvement
Title I is different from Special Education programs as it does not address student needs based on disability or special needs, but rather on the basis of student performance, achievement and progress. Using data to determine individual needs, students may receive explicit and systematic instruction in ELA and/or Math.
Small groups out of the classroom (This is a different model from previous years because of our new designation as a Target Assist School.)
Evidence-based programs and strategies
Teachers progress monitor students regularly
Certified teachers deliver targeted instruction
Family Engagement events, like Read Across America and Bingo for Books
Staff Professional Development in Literacy and Math
Targeted Assistance Title I programs serve only eligible students who have been identified as needing the most help.
In the coming weeks you will receive the 2025-2026 Title I Family Engagement Survey through email.
This survey will assist with the implementation of our Title I Targeted Assistance Program so that we may meet the needs of your family.
The results of this survey will be used to help in the development of the Title I Family Engagement Plan and will inform future family engagement activities.
Counselor's Corner
We are Hiring!
We are hiring a Preschool Teacher long-term substitute to work in collaboration with our preschool team. We anticipate this position will start the week of November 10 and will run through February 23. We are looking for someone who is certified to teach PK-2, has an early childhood certificate for daycare or preschool, or is working towards either licensure. The hours and length of position could be a good fit for someone who is retired or for someone who is just starting their career in early childhood education. Interested applicants should email Karen Lindquist at klindquist@maynard.k12.ma.us.
We are hiring Special Education Paraprofessionals to work with our educational team. In this role, applicants may support one to four students across school settings with academic skills, social skills, transitions, and school access. Special Education Paraprofessionals are part of a team of educators that include general education teachers, special education teachers, service providers, and other paraprofessionals. This is a great full-time opportunity for anyone in a graduate program looking to gain experience before moving into an educational role after graduation. Interested applicants should email Kate Murray at kmurray@maynard.k12.ma.us.
The Maynard Public Schools anticipates hiring Daily Substitutes for the 2025-2026 school year. This role provides flexibility. Daily Substitutes can determine which days, which grade-levels, and which of the three schools they would like to work in. For more information, please email Kate Murray, kmurray@maynard.k12.ma.us, or Colleen Andrade, candrade@maynard.k12.ma.us.

The Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley, Maynard Police Department, and the Maynard Public Schools are participating in the Stuff a Cruiser event to benefit the Maynard Food Pantry.
On Saturday, September 13th, students from both the MHS National Honor Society and Fowler School National Junior Honor Society in conjunction with the Maynard Police, the Maynard Food Pantry, Market Basket of Maynard and the Rotary Club of Nashoba Valley will be participating in Stuff a Cruiser at Market Basket in Maynard from 10am - 1pm.
Stuff a Cruiser is a friendly competition between the surrounding towns of Hudson, Stow, Lancaster, Bolton, Concord and Clinton to see who can collect the most food and/or money for their local food banks. The town with the greatest total weight collected earns bragging rights for the year. Last year Maynard collected over 3,700 pounds of donations (over 2,100 pounds of food and $800 in cash) and missed out on winning by just 14 pounds.
Beginning Wednesday, September 3rd until Friday, September 12th there will be bins located in each school building where items can be dropped off. There will also be a cash donation box in each of the main offices if you would like to make a monetary donation. Every dollar donated is equivalent to 2 pounds of food. All donations will go to the Maynard Food Pantry.
