Trail of Tears Reenactment!
The students really look forward to taking our classroom outside! We give them a small glimpse in to how difficult it is to carry an arms full of stuff just a walk around the block while our ancestors walked over 1000 miles in much worse temperatures. I also brought weighted baby dolls or a monkey and weighted baskets/crates that each "family" had to take turns carrying. At the end you give them all envelopes with cards in them, some have an X on their card. Those are the ones who did not make it on our trail of tears!

How the World Was Made
I love reading Legends to my students! I created a coloring sheet to go with the story along with flashcards!
Sidanelv (see-dah-neh-luh) FAMILY
This week we talked about our Families and how to say some family members names in Cherokee! Drawings is one of my favorite things to do with my kids!
Cherokee Club
We are so excited to travel to the Cherokee Challenge Bowl this coming week! We are taking 8 teams total and they have been practicing non stop. They have learned everything from Cherokee culture, games, history, people, and locations. We will be going to Greasy, OK October 21-24.
Right after the Challenge Bowl, we will be participating in the Cherokee Art Competition. If your child holds a CDIB card, and would like to participate please feel free to reach out!
Native American Studies & Cherokee
Native American Studies
Native American Studies students have been learning about European contact. Students learned about the differences of what life was like for the Cherokees before contact and after contact. The next unit for Native American Studies will be Native American Removal and The Trail of Tears. Students will do a deep dive on how awful the experience was for Native Americans, and they will learn what life was like once Native Americans reached Indian Territory.
Cherokee
Cherokee I and Cherokee II students have been working daily on better understanding the Cherokee Syllabary. Every day, students have a daily bell ringer, which is a new syllabary character. Students learn the symbol, the sound it makes, and a story that goes with the character to easily remember it. Students review all previous symbols every day after they have completed their bell ringer. Students can confidently recognize, write, and read 37 Cherokee Syllabary symbols. This is a huge milestone for students. Students will continue working through symbols each day until they can read, write, and recognize the entire Cherokee Syllabary.
Students have learned general phrases, common words, and quiz biweekly over learned content.
