OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

LEARWOOD MIDDLESCHOOLOCTOBER NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the first quarter! Time has flown by, and we are grateful for the continued support of our school community. October is shaping up to be an exciting month with many important events and activities.

Mark your calendars for October 3rd, when we will have Picture Day. On October 8th, 8th-grade students will take the PSAT, and that same day, we will host Parent Conferences from 3:30 to 7:00 PM. Please note, there is no school on October 9th (Parent Conferences are from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM), and October 10th is a NEOEA Day—no school. The PTA will also hold a meeting on October 16th at 9:30 AM in the AL Library. Later in the month, we look forward to the SouperBowl game against Avon on October 17th, and our Washington D.C. trip from October 22nd to 24th. The first quarter ends on October 24th, and we will celebrate with the Orchestra Fall Festival on October 29th at 6:00 PM in the HS Commons. Additionally, don’t miss the All Pro Parent meeting on October 30th from 7:15 to 7:45 AM.

The Student Council is very thankful to everyone who has donated snacks, games, and especially their time for this Friday’s homecoming tailgate at Learwood. Your generosity and support truly make these events special for our students and families.

This Friday, we are excited to support our high school football team as they take on Elyria at the homecoming game. The game will be held at the high school, and we encourage students to attend and show their school spirit! The homecoming parade will also take place this Saturday morning, providing a fun opportunity to celebrate our school community.

Please remember that all students attending the football game should stay in the designated student section or remain with a parent in the stands. Running around or horseplaying can create safety concerns for everyone. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us ensure a fun, safe, and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Here’s to a fantastic October!

COSTA RICA TRIP INFORMATION

PSAT 8

Learwood Middle School and Avon Lake City Schools are offering students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to participate in the SAT Suite of Assessments. On October 8, 2025, all eighth-grade students at Learwood will take the PSAT 8/9 from 8:00 AM to 10:35 AM. This comprehensive testing program includes three major assessments: PSAT 8/9, PSAT, and SAT. The purpose of the PSAT 8/9 (Practice SAT) is to give students an opportunity to become familiar with the SAT testing format. Scores from this test are not used for grades or placement, so accommodations (504/IEP) will not be provided. However, your student should use this experience to determine if accommodations will be needed in future test settings.

The test will be administered digitally, so please ensure your child’s school-issued Chromebook is fully charged on test day. A digital calculator will be provided for sections that allow calculator use. If students prefer to use their own calculator, it must be an approved model, which can be found here. Phones and smartwatches are not permitted in the testing room. Students should bring a writing utensil, and only water is allowed—no other food or drinks.

The goal of Avon Lake City Schools is to help our students become as prepared as possible for their future. Participating in these assessments helps students understand different test formats, develop test strategies, and improve their overall test-taking skills. This experience is intended to support them in achieving strong scores on college entrance exams like the ACT and SAT.

If you have questions about the administration of the PSAT 8/9, please contact your child’s counselor. You can also find additional information, practice questions, and prep tips at https://parents.collegeboard.org/college-board-programs/psat-89.

Please mark your calendars for this date to ensure your child is available, as there will be no makeup sessions for this exam.
