West Point El. Parent Update
Week of August 18, 2024
Dear West Point Families,
We loved meeting our students and families this past week and are so excited for the new year. Your students have come with such enthusiasm, and we want to keep them excited about learning all year long.
This week we will be beginning our new reading program, CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts Program). One of the highlights of this program is the engaging text which is designed to build students' knowledge in a variety of areas. Please watch for letters from your child's teacher throughout the year which will encourage you to have discussions with your students about what they are reading and learning. We are going to feature some of the great things students are learning and doing with CKLA throughout the year. Stay tuned!
Here are three things to know about for the coming week.
- Applications for our 2024-2026 Community Council are due this Friday, August 23. Applications and additional information are included below. We hope you will take this opportunity to partner with us as we work to make this year successful for all.
- As part of our school theme, students will have the opportunity to earn a letter each month: MAGIC WPE. The E stands for Excellence, and each student has the opportunity to participate in an Excellence Project if they choose to do so. Please read through the information below which explains what an Excellence Project is. We are excited to see what our students choose to do!
We are asking our parents for extra support with attendance and daily home reading this year. Students will have an opportunity to earn a brag tag in each of these areas each month, starting in September. Please help your students establish these habits now so they can be successful in earning their brag tags. They will experience the magic this year one day at a time and one page at a time!
- Attendance: Students can earn an attendance brag tag if they have 1 or less absences that month.
- Reading: Students can earn a reading brag tag if they read at home a minimum of 18 days during the month for at least 20 minutes each day (15 minutes for kindergarten).
Every day is a great day to be a Wildcat!
Sincerely,
Marjorie Conrad and Christie Bouy
Principal and Assistant Principal, West Point Elementary

Experience the Magic
This year our theme is Experience the Magic. Magic stands for Manners, Attentiveness, Gratitude, Inclusiveness, and Confidence. Each month we will be focusing on one of the attributes. Students will have the opportunity to "letter" each month by completing a task to earn that month's letter for their brag tag ring. We will also be earning bonus letters: W P E. Students will have an opportunity to complete an Excellence Project, which we will display during the month of May.
Students are being introduced to the Excellence Project this week as we meet with each grade level. We hope you will encourage your child to participate. We want every student to experience the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from putting effort into learning something new. We have included information about the project below. We have tried to keep it open ended so that it can be as simple or complex as you and your child would like it to be.
School Clubs
Applications can be downloaded from our website if the links below are not working for you.
STEM Club
STEM Club is being offered again this fall for our 5th and 6th grade students. We appreciate Mrs. Hunzeker and Mrs. Bargen for providing this amazing opportunity for our students. Please read through the information below if you would like your student to participate.
Fees are charged for our after school programs. You may apply for a fee waiver to cover the cost of these fees. More information is on our website. You can also call the office with any questions. We want all of our students to have the opportunity to participate in these extracurricular activities!
School Choir
Community Council
Community Council
The Community Council is made up of teachers, parents, and administration who meet five times during the year. Serving on the council is a great way to partner with the school as we consider how to best meet the needs of our students. The Community Council also oversees the expenditure of our Trustland funds.
Applications are currently being accepted through August 23 at 4 p.m. The application is attached below, and copies are available in the office. Applications can be submitted via email to mconrad@dsdmail.net or turned in at the main office. With your application, please include a short paragraph introducing yourself and why you would be an asset to the West Point Elementary Community Council. This information will be shared along with the ballot.
Elections will be held Monday, August 26 through Wednesday, August 28 at 4:00 pm via myDSD. The results will be announced in the Weekly Newsletter on September 1. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 18 at 5:30 p.m. in our Conference Room.
