Happy September!
A Note from Principal Carlotta Simonds-Perantoni
Happy 2nd week of school! It's wonderful walking around the school and seeing our scholars engaged in learning and building community within their classrooms.
Soccer practices have begun! Please make sure you have sent in your long-term bus notes if your scholar is staying afterschool for soccer. The soccer schedule can be found on our website, however, please know that it is subject to change. Thank you to all our volunteer coaches and our Athletics Director, Jennifer Chaffee.
Today we had our first practice Fire Drill of the school year. We will hold a planned Evacuation Drill on Thursday, September 24th. Thank you to our scholars for their efforts put forth during these drills. Families can access our Emergency Preparedness Family Guide on our website.
On Thursday, September 17th, Waits River Valley School scholars K-8 will attend the Tunbridge World's Fair Agricultural Education Day. If you have not filled out the online permission form that was sent out earlier this week, please take a minute to do so.
We are planning our annual Grandparents' Day lunch for Thursday, October 8th. Please watch your email for more information and the sign-up form.
Waits River Valley School will be sending out the Meadows Farm Fundraiser soon! This is an all-school fundraiser which we use to help off-set the costs of Grandparents' Day and our Winter Feast. We thank you in advance for your support.
Have a great holiday weekend; we will see you all back on Tuesday, September 8th!
News from the Health Office with Nurse Carla
Dates to Remember:
Dental Van- September 15th and September 16th.
Little Rivers Mobile Health Clinic- 9/16, 9/30, 10/14 ,10/28
Here are a few things I’d like you to keep in mind and help out with:
● Water Bottles: Please help students to remember their reusable water bottles. Many of the complaints that I see, can be helped with a good drink of water. A water bottle can help keep kids in class!
● Extra clothes: Please help students of all ages remember a second set of seasonally appropriate clothes. We work and play hard at WRVS, and you’d be amazed how often a quick change can help! The office can sometimes take gently used hand me down clothing items if you are ever looking to donate to our cause, please reach out first.
● Forms: If you have not returned health update forms, please try to get them filled out and returned asap. These forms really help me to collect required report data and most importantly meet and care for your student in the best way possible. If your children are participating in soccer, please make sure their up to date physical exam is on file. These are required before players can compete in games.
● Medication: Please contact me if you have not and your child needs to take medication at school. Please do not send medication to school with your child. If getting them here is a problem, please call me to discuss a plan.
● Sick Day Guidance:
- Student should be 24 hours without a fever and not taking fever reducing medicine.
- Student should be 24 hours without vomiting or diarrhea.
- Student’s symptoms should be improving and the student should be well enough to fully participate in their day.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to me at school during the school day at 802-439-5534 or via
email at carla.horniak@oesu.org.
Congratulations Ms. Haskins!
Congratulations to Ms. Haskins for the honor of being named the 2026-2027 OESU Middle/Secondary Teacher of the Year! Ms. Haskins has started her 16th year of teaching Middle School English Language Arts at WRVS. Ms. Haskins is an educator who enters each day with enthusiasm, excitement, and genuine joy. She teaches from the heart, building deep and meaningful relationships with belonging at the center of her work. We all learn from, and with her daily. It is a gift to watch her facilitate learning, spark conversation, thoughtfully probe scholars’ thinking, celebrate their successes, and encourage them to believe in themselves. Ms. Haskins is the teacher who makes you drive home smiling as you reflect on the day. Her joy is contagious, her relationships are genuine, and her impact is lasting. In October we will go to UVM and be a part of the full State Celebration; more pictures to come! Definitely reach out to her, congratulate her, and celebrate her!
