Academy Weekly Newsletter - 9/26
From The Academy at Sturgis Brown High School
Dear parents, guardians, and students,
**Every week a different Academy student will act as a student ambassador for the weekly newsletter. Their message will feature some information about the student, The Academy, and what happened throughout the week.**
Hello,
My name is Trent Byrum. I am a senior at The Academy. The Academy has helped me get my work done so that I can spend my time after school working and enjoying my hobbies. When I get older, I want to be a mechanic and to fix up my own cars. The Academy has helped me look forward to school and getting done early so I can begin working towards my passion: cars.
This week in math class we worked on our backyard projects, which was a fun and creative way to use what we’ve learned. We are reading Fahrenheit 451 in English; it's a future dystopian American society where books are outlawed. In government we are wrapping up our third final paper about the country we chose to research. In science, we are learning about metric conversions and how to convert them.
The Academy means a lot to me because it’s helped me grow both in school and as a person. The teachers support us and push us to be our best, and the environment makes it easier to stay focused and motivated. Being here has given me the chance to explore my interests, like working with my hands and thinking about my future career. I feel more confident and prepared for what comes next because of everything I’ve learned at The Academy.

English Notes by Ms. R
English students write a journal entry, practice a spelling word, and learn a new vocabulary word every day. They also practice grammar. This week students continued learning the building blocks of English grammar by studying subjects, verbs, and clause and sentence structure. They also were tested on commonly misspelled words such as argument and amendment and the root word stit as well as words like constitution and destitute.
On Tuesday students competed in the 4th Annual Academy Poetry Slam! Thank you so much if you were one of the parents or Academy stakeholders that attended! It means so much to the students that you were there!
The winners of the independent poetry competition were:
Ashley Briscoe and Memphis Morgan
The winners of the team poetry competition were:
Winona Werlinger, Xander Gabrielson, and Ashley Briscoe
The winner of the Spirit of the Slam was:
Elijah Stroud
Congratulations to all of our prize winners and all of our poets!
Our next unit is a dystopian unit, so we began reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 this week in class. The students also began creating utopian countries (these countries will eventually become dystopias).
Students are also reading an independent reading book throughout the course of this trimester. This trimester they are reading dystopian novels such as: 1984 or Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, etc . Students were able to select a book from 25+ different fiction dystopian books. The students read this book every day and write a paragraph about what they read. At the end of the trimester, they will complete a final project about the novel they selected.
If you would like to know what is coming up in Academy English, please feel free to review my trimester lesson plans. They can be found here.

Principles of Algebra and Geometry by Mr. Leonhardt
In class we learned how to design a backyard by calculating the total area, deciding where to place trees, rocks, and sod, and figuring out how much of each material was needed. We also added up the costs for each item to find out the total expense of building the backyard. Additionally, we practiced using the order of operations (P.E.M.D.A.S) to solve problems correctly and understand which steps come first in calculations.

This week in math we worked with calculating area. We did this by dividing up a shape or "the yard" into different sections. We had to find the area of each section and figure out how much material we would need to fill each section. Additionally, we had to create a rough estimate on how much each material would cost to fill up its respective area.
