Week of the Military Child
Non-traditional Remote Instructional Days - Snow Days 6-10
We have officially used all of our snow days. On the next snow day, we will begin remote instruction. I have attached a picture of the schedule for students. Your child's teacher will have their schedule and Teams link under the homeroom tab in Schoology. Your students have practiced logging on and should know where the links are.
NAEP Assessment - Select 4th Grade Students - Rescheduled for March 4
Along with other 4th grade students across the nation, Mill Creek Intermediate School will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on March 4, 2024. Students in 4th grade are randomly selected to take this assessment. If your student is selected, he/she will take either a mathematics or reading assessment. While the assessment in voluntary, NAEP depends on student participation to help policy makers improve education.
WVGSA Writing Assessment - March 11 & 12
Each year, students in grades 3-8 take the West Virginia General Summative Assessment. The West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) is an online summative test given to measure student performance on the state’s content standards, which provide clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
This year, students will take the writing portion of this assessment in March. At Mill Creek, 3rd and 4th grade students will take the writing assessment on March 11. All 5th grade students will take the assessment on March 12. It is very important that your student is present for this assessment. If you know ahead of time that you have an appointment on one of those days, please let your child's teacher know. We will give your child an alternate date.

SOAR'n Supporters (PTO) & Local School Improvement Council
The LSIC is a committee that is meant to assist the school and school system in ensuring that parent, family, business, and community involvement is embedded in all aspects of the school and county strategic improvement plans. It will help to develop and promote the school and school system vision for excellence by being catalysts for innovation and it will represent the voice of the community’s education stakeholders.
At Mill Creek, the LSIC will be working collaboratively with the SOAR'n Supporters (PTO) to plan and implement family involvement activities. We invite all caregivers who would like to help with these activities to attend our quarterly LSIC meetings.
The SOAR'n Supporters volunteer form is attached below.
All meetings will be held in the school library at 4pm. The tentative quarterly dates will be:
- Feb. 28
- April 10
Bus Cancellation Procedures
Like many other businesses, Berkeley County Schools continues to be short staffed, especially in the area of substitutes. Unfortunately, this shortage causes the transportation office to occasionally cancel bus routes.
You can always find transportation updates on the transportation portal: https://www.berkeleycountyschools.org/page/student-well-being-health-resources
If you find your student's bus is cancelled, please follow the below procedures for drop-off and pick-up. Additionally, please send in a note to your child's teacher stating the name of the individual of who will be picking your student up. Also, please make sure that individual knows to bring a photo ID.
We have been so appreciative of your patience and understanding as these cancellations continue to occur.
If you are looking for a flexible career that would make a large impact on your community, I encourage you to consider being a substitute. You can find more information here: https://www.berkeleycountyschools.org/page/substitute-teach-with-bcs
Reminder of MCI Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
For the safety of our students, we ask that you follow these procedures:
- Buses Arrive: 8:20
- Parent Drop Off: South End Lot 8:20 -8:40. Please do not drop students off until a staff member is on duty. You will drive the loop and drop students off at the sidewalk. Please be cautious and look for staff directing you. There will also be buses in this loop.
- Students Tardy: 8:46 (***Students arriving after 8:40 must be signed in by an adult in the office)
- Dismissal Begins: 3:20 -- If you need to change the way your student normally goes home, please send in a note to your child ’s teacher. We discourage you from calling the office to change information at the last minute. If your child is riding home on a bus with another student, BOTH students must have notes.
- Parent Pick Up: PLEASE REMAIN IN YOUR CAR UNTIL 3:25. For the safety and privacy of our students, we need to have the sidewalk clear. Please park in a parking spot and not in the fire lane. Please do not block other cars in. We ask that families who pick up on a regular basis to please fill out the pick -up form below. Parents will park in the south end lot and come to the music room door to sign student out. Please be prepared to show ID every day.
- Students Leaving Early: The office is a busy area in the afternoon. If it is necessary to sign your child out before 3:20 for an appointment, please report to the front office prior to 3pm and be prepared to show your ID. You will need an electronic device to scan a QR code for sign-out.
How do I find my child's SOAR points on Dojo?
Step 1: Open the Class Dojo App
Step 2: Click the drop down arrow beside your picture (upper left-hand corner)
Step 3: Click on your student's name
Step 4: Under the teacher's name, you will see their total points
***Please communicate with your child on a daily basis to see if they earned their point for the day. If you have any questions, please reach out directly to their teacher.
How is your child doing with their SOAR goal?
As a reminder, the Jostens Renaissance Program is a framework of culture where teachers love their job and students thrive in school. It is built on common core values and expectations. At Mill Creek, our Renaissance program is built around the core values of Safety, Ownership, Achievement and Respect. Students and staffulty will receive recognition and rewards when following these core values. Each day, our students will have the opportunity to earn a SOAR point based on these values. You can find the guidelines on the back of their daily folders and check their progress on Class Dojo.
We will host our third nine week SOAR celebration on March 13. In order for your student to earn this reward, they must have earned their daily SOAR point at least 80% of the time. For this nine weeks, your student will need 37 points. Students earn points by being present for a full day of school (unless they have a doctor's note), completing work and showing SOAR'n behavior each day.
You can monitor your child's progress toward meeting this goal on Class Dojo.
