A Note from Mrs. Mathe
I’m looking forward to our first community event of the school year tonight—Husky HOWL-o-Ween! If you missed the chance to pre-purchase your entry tickets, don’t worry—tickets will be available at the door.
I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has volunteered to make this event possible! Whether you’ve been blowing up hundreds of balloons, creating trick-or-treat stations, working behind the scenes to organize, or volunteering to help run the event, it truly wouldn’t be possible without your time, energy, and generosity. We are so grateful for all you do!
Next week will be another fun-filled, memory-making week on campus with our Red Ribbon Week dress-up days, Orbit visiting our students, and the always-popular Storybook Character Parade! Be sure to check out the information below for details about each of these exciting events.
Playground and Campus Improvements Underway!
We’re excited to share that construction updates are happening on our playground! A new climber and trash cans have been installed to enhance our outdoor space. The ground surface is being updated from mulch to pour-n-play material for improved safety and accessibility.
Additionally, we’re adding more bike racks near the back bike/walker entrance and the middle walker area to better accommodate our students who bike to school.
All these improvements are expected to be completed within the next two weeks. We appreciate your patience as we work to make our campus even better for everyone!
GT Testing Information
Referral requests for the Gifted and Talented (GT) program are now being accepted from October 1–December 19, 2024. Although GT testing will not take place until late January, families interested in referring their child should contact their child’s teacher to request a nomination packet.
Please note: 2nd grade students do not need a parent referral. All 2nd graders will take the CogAT test this October. These scores are used as the first step in the GT evaluation process. Families will be notified after CogAT results are received if their child qualifies for the second phase of GT testing in January.
CogAT Assessment- 2nd Grade Update
Dear 2nd Grade Families,
We wanted to let you know that CogAT testing has been temporarily suspended. The testing company has reported that their system is currently down, and they are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Once the system is back up, our 2nd grade teachers will administer the remainder of the test next week. The district has also provided us with an extension, allowing make-up testing to continue through November 6.

Student Spotlight
We are excited to introduce a new section in The Hines Herald called Student Spotlight! This feature will celebrate the amazing achievements, acts of kindness, and positive contributions of our Huskies both inside and outside of school. In this section, we will highlight students who have gone above and beyond—whether it’s reaching a personal goal, helping others, or making a difference in the community. We can’t wait to share these inspiring stories and honor the incredible ways our students shine!

READ ME IF YOU PLAN TO CHECK YOUR CHILD OUT AFTER THE PARADE
We have a full day of school scheduled for Friday, October 31st, however we know in the past, many parents have chosen to check their child out of school at the conclusion of the parade. Below are the instructions for checking out your child once the parade is over.
- After the last class completes the parade route (which will be a little longer after they are done outside), we will let parents in the back doors (from the patio and at the end of the 1st and 2nd grade hallways).
- We will have staff stationed throughout the building to guide parents to their child's classroom.
- You will report to your child's classroom and there will be a sign out sheet for you to sign.
- The easiest form of identification is if you bring your car rider sign to show to your child's teacher, they will know you are a person that can check out the child.
- Otherwise, be prepared to show your ID to your child's teacher to verify you are able to check out the student.
- Once you sign, your child will receive a sticker that indicates they have been checked out.
- Proceed to the FRONT DOORS of the school to exit. Administration will be on hand to verify that all students leaving have a check out sticker.
- If you get to the front doors without a sticker, you will be directed to go back to the classroom to obtain one.
- If you forget your ID, or if someone other than the guardian is picking up the student, we will ask that you come to the front office to sign out your child.
- Please note, our doors are alarmed. If you attempt to exit through a door other than the front doors, our alarms will sound. WE will have staff stationed to remind you to exit through the front to avoid the embarrassing alarms.

Family Assistance
Throughout the school year, our school receives donations and access to various community resources intended to help our families thrive. This support can often include essential items, school supplies, cold-weather gear, or other assistance.
We want to make sure these resources reach the families who could use them most. If you feel your family would benefit from being included in this confidential outreach, please send an email to jtaylor4@conroeisd.net or rjtaylor@conroeisd.net. We will connect with you privately as opportunities arise.

Library Updates from Mrs. Igoe
Book Notifications
Conroe ISD Library Services has enabled checkout notifications, so you know the title of the books your student checked out. These notifications will be sent on days when your student checks out a book from the school library and will only be sent for the initial checkout. Daily notifications will no longer occur for the entire time a book is checked out to a student. State law and board policy do not allow an opt-out option for these notifications. If you have a question or concern about your student’s reading material, please contact your campus librarian.
