Douglas Gardens Newsletter
Home of the Mustangs. February 2023
From The Principal
Welcome to the fabulous month of February. We have certainly hit the ground running since January. Staff and students are working hard at Douglas Gardens. Staff have spent time reteaching and practicing our school rules of “Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be Safe.” It would be helpful if you could support us in reviewing these expectations with your child and what those rules would look like at school. You are your child’s first and most important teacher and we are so appreciative of your efforts. As always, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
We are bringing back Family Literacy Night and the Scholastic Book Fair this year. Hooray! The Book Fair will run February 27 – March 3. If you are interested in volunteering at the book fair, please call the office by Friday, Feb. 3 at 541-744-6387. Our Family Literacy Night will be March 2 and we will have the Book Fair open during this event. Please watch for more information coming home through Seesaw about these fun events and please consider volunteering!
Our PTO has brought some fun events back to DG this year. They are providing free popcorn to our students monthly and many of you enjoyed our Harvest Party. Thank you, PTO! They are working on a Spring Carnival and we have until April 3rd to gather enough volunteers to pull off this event. The Spring Carnival is tentatively scheduled for May 5th and if you are considering volunteering, please send an email indicating you are interested in supporting this event to: douglasgardenselementarypto@gmail.com
Thank you for all the support you show our staff!
Warmly,
Carla Smith, Principal
Inclement Weather
Springfield Public Schools Weather Procedures
When do we know:
If snow or ice is predicted, designated staff monitor radar and forecasts and then take to the road between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. to assess travel conditions on bus routes. The goal is to determine by 6:30 a.m. whether school will be closed, on delay, or operating as usual.
No news, means no change. If you don't hear any information about Springfield Public Schools, you can assume that schools and busses are operating on their normal schedules. However, the decision of whether to send your child to school is always left to each parent. If you do not feel that it is safe to transport your child to school, contact the school to let them know.
After-school activities:
If schools are closed due to hazardous weather conditions, all after-school activities are cancelled, including athletic games, practices, and building rentals.
Snow routes:
Occasionally, the conditions do not warrant closing school, however some routes may not be safe to navigate a school bus. Families who live at certain higher elevations may need to bring their child(ren) to a lower elevation to catch the bus at an alternative location. The district has developed snow routes that may be used if hazardous road conditions exist. These snow routes may change from year to year and can be accessed online:
Parking Lot Reminder
We have made progress but reminders never hurt. Please remember the following: The pick-up/ drop-off line starts at 7:55am for morning drop off and not before 2:30pm on regular day pick up. For Early Release Fridays, no line will be allowed before 12:10 pm. You are asked to park in a regular parking spot if arriving for pick up/drop before these times.
