The last week of school for the 2025-2026 school year has arrived! The years go by quicker and quicker each year. I cannot believe that we only have four days left. Thank you to our families for supporting us each and every day! We absolutely love all of our Linwood kiddos and we work together closely as a staff to ensure they are able to learn and grow into their best self. We could never do what we do without our families partnering with us to do the absolute best for all of our students!

Do not forget we have Field Day for our Kindergarten through 4th grade students on Tuesday. Our Kindergartners through 2nd graders will participate from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and our 3rd through 4th graders will participate from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

**Families are invited to attend Field Day with their child. All field day activities will remain outside so those students in the building can continue with their learning and activities.**

Classroom teachers may be asking families to send a bag in with their child to school. This bag will be used to bring home items from school. It is usually done earlier in the week.

Yearbooks will be handed out this week to students whose families purchased them online from Lifetouch. We have a few yearbooks for sale so if you need to purchase one contact Mrs. K in the office to make sure we have one available. It will cost $20.

PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCE FORM REMINDER (Shared 4/26/26)

As we approach a busy time of year, we wanted to send a reminder to our Linwood families to complete a pre-arranged absence form for any upcoming vacations or dates when your child will be out of town. This will help ensure that absences are recorded as excused. Without prior notice, absences will be marked as unexcused.

Here is the link: Pre-arranged absence form

FLAMS 6TH GRADE READINESS ASSESSMENTS FOR OUR 5TH GRADERS (Updated 5/31/26)

Hello 5th grade Linwood Families!

Your 5th grade students took the Math Readiness Tests and teachers recommended students who met the expectations for Advanced English. Student results from these assessments guide how to schedule students appropriately, we also factor in historical results on standardized tests such as MCA scores and FAST Test scores, as well as grades earned in 5th-grade classes.

*Placement results will be emailed to families during the week of June 29th - July 3rd. If you have questions regarding this process, feel free to contact me.*

Sincerely, Sam Van Hefty, Assistant Principal

Forest Lake Area Middle School

In Mrs. Bauer's Art Class:

Kindergarten: Simple Face. Students traced and cut out shapes to create a collage showing emotion. We are now studying Romero Britto- an artist who created the "Happy Art" movement. You may see some bright and colorful art come home based on this type of art.

First grade: Textured animals. Students traced and painted a picture of their favorite animal. They added salt and plastic wrap to create texture.

Second grade: Something I Love. Students traced and painted a picture of something they love. They used oil pastels to add details.

Third grade: Still life. Students are drawing a picture of a group of fruit and painting it with watercolors, shading and highlighting.

Fourth grade: Clay. Students have been using different types of clay and techniques to sculp animals.

From Mrs. Bauer's Media Center:

1st-4th graders are finishing up typing skills. 2-4th graders are doing research projects and creating google slideshows.

All library books are due Tuesday, May 26. I will be sending home overdue book reminders home each week. Let me know if you have questions! There will be a school-wide contest to see which class(es) can get all of their books returned on time. Those classes will earn a party!

We have a few more books on our Amazon wish list: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2L2QG9KOSXZAR.

Thank you! Stacy Bauer

Our School Forest is beautiful in all seasons. Time in fresh air and a walk under the trees truly does change how our staff and students go back into school. I have spent time looking at the research and benefits of being outside and why is is critical. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Mental health: Students are calmer and more focused when learning outdoors. They also experience a healthy drop in cortisol levels around midday, which can positively affect their mood and behavior.
  • Academic performance: Students who learn outdoors often score higher on standardized tests and have higher grade point averages.
  • Behavioral problems: Students who learn outdoors are less likely to exhibit behavioral problems.
  • Development: Outdoor learning supports emotional, intellectual, and behavioral development. Students develop a sense of self, independence, confidence, creativity, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical health: Running, jumping, and climbing help children stay physically healthy.
  • Serotonin levels: Touching soil can increase serotonin levels in children.
  • Blood pressure: Both adults and children experience a decrease in blood pressure while outside.

The School Forest is truly a blessing for all of us including our community that is able to access it anytime.

Do not forget to add our Linwood School Forest page (Linwood School Forest) on Facebook so that you can stay up to date on what is happening or coming soon.

We appreciate your support of our wonderful Linwood School Forest!

Drop off, Pick up, and PUP (Pick Up Patrol) Information (Updated 9-1-2025) Drop off, Pick up, and PUP (Pick Up Patrol) Information (Updated 9-1-2025)

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

We are excited to announce that we will continue using a system called Pick Up Patrol (PUP) at Linwood to help us track dismissals and attendance. Watch this short video to learn more!

Pick Up Patrol (PUP) saves us a great deal of time here in the office at Linwood and will reduce interruptions in our classrooms—while also providing better communication between home and school and a convenient, flexible way for families to make changes to your children’s dismissal plans through a safe and secure program. Most importantly, it will help us to continue to ensure that our students are safely dismissed to their correct after-school destinations. We will also be using Pick Up Patrol (PUP) for attendance too.

LINWOOD FAMILIES WILL USE THE Pick Up Patrol (PUP) WEB APP FOR:

1) ATTENDANCE: Use the Pick Up Patrol (PUP) web app to share when your child will be absent, arriving late or leaving early. Pick Up Patrol will notify our office staff of this information.

2) DISMISSAL CHANGES: Submit changes to your child’s regular dismissal plans on the Pick Up Patrol (PUP) web app. For example:

  • A student normally rides the bus, but is getting picked up today.
  • A student usually goes to aftercare, but is leaving early for an appointment.

HERE IS HOW Pick Up Patrol (PUP) WORKS:

Your child is assigned a dismissal plan at the start of the year. This is the plan they will regularly follow on normal days. We call this the Default Plan.

Whenever you have a change to your child's Default Plan, you’ll submit a change through the Pick Up Patrol (PUP) app. When the plan is submitted, the school will be notified and your child’s teacher will relay the change to your child.

Linwood Families will continue to use our Afternoon Pick Up Line Procedure to pick up their child at the end of the day. Each car in the pick up line will display the Car Tag with their child's name on it on their rear view mirror. The Car Tags will be sent home with all Linwood students at Open House. Every family will get one so they have a Car Tag whenever they may need it throughout the school year.

HERE IS HOW LINWOOD FAMILIES GET STARTED WITH Pick Up Patrol (PUP):

  1. REGISTER: You received a registration email from Pick Up Patrol (PUP) with a link to set up your account. The Pick Up Patrol (PUP) web app is free to Linwood families and you can use it on your smartphone or computer. Pick Up Patrol (PUP) is not accessed through the app stores. Instead, for easy access, follow the instructions in your registration email from Pick Up Patrol (PUP) for how to add it to your phone’s home screen.
  2. ENTER DEFAULT PLANS: Once you register, log into your Pick Up Patrol (PUP) account by Friday, September 5th to confirm your child’s default dismissal plan. It’s important that you complete this step so that we can accurately dismiss your children.

IMPORTANT TIMELINE DETAILS FOR Pick Up Patrol (PUP):

  1. Set up your Pick Up Patrol (PUP) account as soon as you get the registration email
  2. Log in to your Pick Up Patrol (PUP) account by Friday, September 5th!
  3. All default plans (how your child normally gets home everyday from school) should be entered in your Pick Up Patrol (PUP) account for your child(ren) by Friday, September 5th.
  4. ALL dismissal changes can begin to be entered in Pick Up Patrol (PUP) starting on Tuesday, September 2nd.
  5. ALL dismissal changes MUST be entered into Pick Up Patrol (PUP) no later than 2:30 pm on the day of the change.
  6. Notes, emails and phone calls for dismissal changes will no longer be accepted at Linwood, except in extreme emergencies. These requests MUST be done in Pick Up Patrol (PUP).

Thank you for using Pick Up Patrol (PUP) to make safety a priority and to ensure our dismissal and attendance process is efficient for all our students. We appreciate your patience as we roll this out right from the beginning of the school year.

Linwood Morning Drop Off Procedure

If you are planning to drop off your child at Linwood for school in the morning, students need to stay in the car until 9:00 am. ALL student enter through Door 2 between 9:00-9:15 am. You can drop your child off on the sidewalk on the side of the building by the Kindergarten classrooms, which is BEFORE you get to the front entrance of the building. (picture below) ALL BUSES MUST BE ABLE TO PARK AND DROP OFF STUDENTS IN THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. NO CARS SHOULD BE MIXED IN BETWEEN BUSES OR PULLING IN FRONT OF BUSES. When ALL buses are gone, staff will direct families to drive around to drop off their children in front of Door 2.

Linwood Afternoon Pick Up Procedure

Our family pick up procedures for the end of the day will remain the same as last year. Families will use the parking lot at the end of our building by Door 16 to pick up their children in a drive through fashion. (Refer to the Map below in our special Pick Up Patrol (PUP) section) Families will stay in their vehicles and we will bring your children safely to your vehicle when you get to the sidewalk. This will ensure a quick and easy flow for families to get through the pick up lane. When there is a long line, please plan to line up on the shoulder of Typo Creek. Please plan to have an ID on you if you do not regularly pick up your child so we can ensure students are safe.

A few reminders for Parent Drop Off and Pick Up:

  • If you plan to pick up your child before the end of the day, PLEASE enter this in PUP. Starting Monday, September 8th we will only accept changes through PUP (Pick Up Patrol)!
  • If there will be any changes in how your child arrives or leaves school, please enter it into PUP before 2:30 pm and your child's teacher will be notified of this change.
  • If you drop off your students at Linwood in the morning PLEASE do not park in the parking lot. We need families to get in the Parent Drop off line and wait patiently. We have many staff whose hours start at 9:00 am and they need a parking spot.
  • If you pick up your child at Linwood anytime after 3:15 pm, you will need to go through the Parent Pick Up Line.
  • PLEASE do not get out of your car! Our amazing Linwood staff will help your children get in and out of your car so we can keep the line moving.
  • Do not pull up to pass other cars! We are putting cones to prevent this from happening so that we can keep all families and children safe.
  • Continue to be patient and so gracious as we do all we can to keep everyone safe and get you in and out as quickly as possible.

If you have any questions, please first check the Pick Up Patrol (PUP) FAQ page. If you still need help, contact Mrs. K in the office at hkarstens@flaschools.org or email Pick Up Patrol (PUP) at support@pickuppatrol.net.

Thank you for your support!

PICK UP PATROL (PUP) INFORMATION & DEFAULT PLANS (10/26/2025) PICK UP PATROL (PUP) INFORMATION & DEFAULT PLANS (10/26/2025)

We want to remind everyone about the importance of using PickUp Patrol (PUP) as the only way to communicate with the school about your child’s attendance and dismissal changes.

PUP allows us to:

  • Track daily attendance accurately.

  • Know if your child will be dropped off late or picked up early.

  • Ensure your child follows the correct dismissal plan each day.

Pick-Up Procedures Reminder

  • Pick-Up: Refers to the end-of-day dismissal in the parent pick-up line.

  • Early Dismissal: Refers to any pick-up before 3:10 p.m. from the office.

Please check your child’s class schedule or Ms. Mattson’s weekly message to see when forest visits or school events are scheduled. If you plan to pick your student up early during one of these times, you may need to wait until the class returns to the building or the event concludes.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

If you have not yet entered your child’s Default Plan in PUP, please do so as soon as possible. The Default Plan tells us how your child gets to school and goes home on a regular day (for example: rides Bus #12 to and from school).

Having this information is critical to keeping all students safe and accounted for at the end of the day. If we do not have a Default Plan entered for your child, we will defer to the bus route assigned to them by the district’s transportation office (“bus barn”).

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important step. Your cooperation helps us keep dismissal smooth, safe, and stress-free for everyone.

If you need assistance with PickUp Patrol or entering your Default Plan, please contact the school office — we are happy to help.

IMPORTANT WEATHER SCHOOL RELATED INFORMATION (Shared 1/11/26) IMPORTANT WEATHER SCHOOL RELATED INFORMATION (Shared 1/11/26)

SCHOOL DELAYS OR SCHOOL CANCELLATION REMINDERS

With winter weather approaching, be sure that your family is prepared for possible school delays or cancellations. You can find information about our winter weather cancellation procedures on our website. We send direct emails, texts and phone calls to parents of enrolled students. That contact information comes directly from the student’s record, so parents and families should make sure that contact information is up-to-date.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SNOW DAY AND ELEARNING DAY

Our district calendar is arranged to allow two traditional snow days, where no school work is expected from students at home. If two snow days have already been called for the school year, the district will begin using eLearning days, where the student remains at home and completes school work online or with materials provided the day before. Messages sent to parents and posted on our district website will notify parents when it is an eLearning day.

WINTER BUS REMINDERS

As we move into the winter season, we have a couple of reminders to help students and families stay safe in and around the school bus. Please keep the following rules in mind:

  • Families and students should stay at least 10 feet back from the bus until it has made a complete stop. This is for your safety in case of slippery road conditions or if the bus driver needs to pull over further than anticipated.

  • Parents and non-students are not allowed to board the bus.

  • Be sure you have the MyStop app. This is the best way for parents to track their bus and receive push alert messages if the bus is running behind schedule. You can find information about the app and download instructions on our website.

We have implemented My Stop, a bus tracking app for families of students who ride our buses. This app will allow families or students to track their bus in real time as it travels along its route.

We are hoping that this app will be especially helpful for families during the upcoming winter season when road conditions can cause bus delays. The app is simply a way for families to track their bus in real time. It does not offer radius notifications, however, those who use the app will be able to receive notifications from our transportation staff if there are any significant delays or updates that families should be aware of.

Click on this link for detailed instructions on downloading and using My Stop.

I wanted to highlight this topic in our FLAS Elementary Family Handbook. As you can see below our Attendance and Absences sections shares information about how absences are defined and expectations for our teachers regarding work students will miss while they are absent. Please see School Board Policy #519 for additional details. A few important reminders:

  • When your child is sick or has an appointment, please enter it into PUP (Pick up Patrol). Nurse Jackie has access to this information and will document your child's absence into our system.
  • If you will be taking a family trip or vacation, please complete this form prior to the trip, enter the information into PUP (Pick Up Patrol), and Nurse Jackie will document it in our system.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION POLICY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION POLICY

Over the past several years, the school district community has had many discussions regarding classroom celebrations, student wellness and safety, and creating a welcoming environment for all students. We have discussed many aspects of our district practices in this light, including how we recognize our students on their birthdays. Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, a practice was implemented of students not bringing birthday treats, including food and non-food items. This decision was made after much thought and discussion at a district level, as a community, and as a staff. There are a variety of reasons why this change has been made, including:

  • The impact upon limited instructional time

  • The impact of the number of ‘treat days’ on the cleanliness level of instructional spaces

  • Financial impact for families, and concern for children and families who may not be able to afford the same expenses other families might

  • The concern for students with allergies or other dietary needs

  • The number of high-calorie, low-nutrient treats distributed to children over the school year

  • The desire to focus attention on the child as opposed to the treat

This practice of refraining from distributing treats also complements our healthy snack practice. Families that wish to remember their child’s birthday by a contribution to classroom resources such as books, decorations, or similar items should contact the building principal in advance to discuss the proposed donation.

For many families this practice is not new as a number of our teachers have already initiated the no birthday treat practice in their classrooms. For others this will be your family’s first encounter with this practice. We realize that this change may not be desired news for everyone at this time. Please be assured that parental support has been more than favorable from the schools and classrooms that have already moved in this direction.

Classroom teachers will continue to realize how important sense of self is to a child and to recognize children on their special day in special ways. Thanks in advance for your support of this practice and for helping promote healthy snacks in the Forest Lake Area Schools.

Dear Linwood Families,

We are excited to share that Ms. Hinze will be continuing this year in her role with Lakes Center for

Youth and Families. Thanks to a special grant that has enriched our school for the past few years,

Ms. Hinze focuses on creating unique enrichment experiences and providing support for students

throughout the school day.

Here’s a glimpse of the incredible opportunities your child can enjoy:

  • Service Learning Projects (5th Grade) & Lunch Clubs (4th &5th): Our 5th graders can join service project teams where they work together to make a positive impact on our community. Additionally, they can dive into Lunch Clubs covering a wide range of topics, such as art, healthy habits, career exploration, internet safety, book club, and more. Students can choose the club that sparks their passion!
  • Lunch Bunch (K-4): During lunch, students from Kindergarten through 4th grade can participate in enriching activities. They’ll enjoy reading stories, engaging in fun projects, and building essential life and social skills, all while forming new friendships. Ms. Hinze works with each grade level throughout the year to ensure every child gets to take part in this exciting program.
  • Influence Rangers (4th & 5th Grade): Our Influence Rangers, led by Ms. Hinze, play a pivotal role in welcoming and hosting Linwood families and students at school events, enhancing the community spirit that makes our school so special.
  • Classroom Support: Ms. Hinze also lends a helping hand in classrooms, providing mentorship, student check-ins, and supporting classroom activities. She helps make sure every student feels seen, supported, and celebrated.
  • STEAM Team (Select Grades): Hands-on learning comes to life through our STEAM Team! Certain grade levels will have the chance to dive into exciting Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) activities, sparking curiosity and creativity.

Ms. Hinze is excited to continue her journey at Linwood Elementary in this expanded role and is

dedicated to helping our students thrive. We are so proud of the enriching opportunities available to

your children!

If you would prefer your child not to participate in any of these activities, please contact Gretchen

FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH (2025-2026 School Year) FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH (2025-2026 School Year)

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

You may have seen in the news the summer of 2023 that the Minnesota Legislature and Governor Walz have approved a new law providing free breakfast and lunch to Minnesota school students. Here are the details:

  • One free breakfast and one free lunch per day. Students will still use a PIN pad at the school cafeteria.

  • Students who bring a lunch from home and would like a school milk will need to pay for it.

  • A la Carte items and second meals are pre-paid or payment can be dropped off at the office, sent with your child to school or online through the PayPam system.

  • Families who have previously qualified for free or reduced meals should continue to apply for these benefits each year. Although meals are now fully covered by a state program, families who qualify can receive other educational benefits through the district, such as reduced activity fees, musical instrument rentals, and other reduced costs. Please use this link to apply for benefits.

  • If your child brings a cold lunch, they will need to buy a milk if they want one. Milk is only free if your student has a school lunch.

  • Every student at Linwood has a PIN number that they enter to get a school breakfast or lunch. Please help your students practice their PIN numbers at home. It will help the lines go much more quickly.

The handbook includes general information about the district, district policies and practices, along with building-specific policies and practices. All students and Parents/Guardians should read and understand the General Information and School Policies and the Summaries of District Policies contained in the Forest Lake Area Schools Student and Family Handbook. There are changes in our policy for Cell Phones, Personal Technology, and Valuables:

  • We strongly recommend that students do not bring personal cell phones, smartwatches, and other technology to school. If a child has one of these items, it needs to stay in their backpack and be powered off, as they are a distraction to learning. If a child has an updated Emergency Health Care Plan that includes technology, we will support their care plan. If a staff member sees a cell phone or other personal technology device, it will be kept in the principal’s office, families will be contacted, and they will need to pick it up. As a reminder, we are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

SAFETY DRILLS AT LINWOOD (Updated 5/24/2026) SAFETY DRILLS AT LINWOOD (Updated 5/24/2026)

Our district has adopted The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Here is their website if you would like to know and learn more. Students and staff have experience in this protocol after having been trained, participated in the practices and drills. The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on an all hazards approach as opposed to individual scenarios. Like the Incident Command System (ICS), SRP utilizes clear common language while allowing for flexibility in protocol. The premise is simple - there are five specific actions that can be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a “Term of Art” and is then followed by a “Directive.” Execution of the action is performed by active participants, including students, staff, teachers and first responders. The SRP is based on the following actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter (see poster further below in the newsletter).

As Fall approaches, we begin to practice our required drills. Every school year, we are required to have 5 fire drills, 5 lockdown drills, and 1 tornado drill. These drills are teaching moments where we are able to teach our students what we do in specific situations in order to stay safe. Research has shown that we must practice these drills so that our actions and responses are stored in our muscle memory. Our drills also allow for conversations about how to tweak, improve or clarify issues. I will communicate when lockdown drills will occur in our weekly newsletter for families. We have pre-scheduled our drills and will do our best to keep to these dates. If we change any dates, I will inform you in the newsletter of the new date. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Fire Drills: May 28th

Lockdown Drills: May 27th and June 1st

Tornado Drill: Practicing this drill again as a school the week of May 18th (one time only)

ANNUAL SAFETY PRESENTATION INFORMATION ANNUAL SAFETY PRESENTATION INFORMATION

As a school and district we take time to review safety with all of our learners. To keep families informed and engaged in safety updates, here are a few BIG things we covered in the first few weeks of school:

  • PBIS PRIDE: Our Linwood Essential Agreements and Expectations for students in all areas of our school follow our PRIDE PBIS Matrix. Students know and understand the expectations on how to be Positive, Respectful, Integrity, Dependable, and Engaged at Linwood.

  • Bus Safety: Students reviewed how to load, ride and unload the bus safely. Students reviewed how to show PRIDE on our buses for field trips or transportation to and from school.

  • Biking and Walking Safety: Students reviewed and learned about walking and biking in our community safely. Due to the high traffic areas that surround Linwood Elementary, we do not allow students to bike or walk to school.
