MN Schools of Excellence Oak View Elementary School
Oak View is working towards becoming a MN School of Excellence. This is a prestigious award given to MN schools who take their community through this school improvement process. The schools who are selected are able to claim this status for 7 years. It’s a great way to highlight the amazing work we’re doing at Oak View and to continue to grow and thrive as a community. We’re also using this process to help market our amazing school. Our goal is to have approximately 50-70% of our families complete this survey. Here is a little more about the process and timeline:
Please complete the survey by November 23rd
The team will work to synthesize the information and will submit our application by June 1st, 2026.
We will be awarded the status of MN Schools of Excellence over the summer after we complete the entire process and application.
Families will be informed of our MN Schools of Excellence status over the summer or by September, 2026.
If you have any questions about the MN Schools of Excellence please feel free to reach out to Principal Gibbs at Gibbsr@district279.org or by clicking on this link to learn more about the prestigious award here: https://www.mespa.net/soe

Book Fair
Hello Oak View Families!
The Bookfair will soon be here. It's an exciting and fun time for our students to discover new books and find classmates who enjoy those same books. Books bring us together, create conversation and can be a starting point to a great friendship. We have fun events planned for the weeks of the book fair including a book fair preview, coloring contests, and classroom BINGO. If you would like to volunteer for this wonderful event, please sign up here: Sign-Up Genius

Silent Disco and Glow Party
Grief Group Information
You may already know that the district’s partnership with the Growing Through Grief program concluded at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Counselors from this program supported students through their grieving process and provided valuable care and resources to so many families and we are very grateful for their expertise and meaningful collaboration. We are also aware of an increase in the need for services like the group experiences they provided. To help meet those needs and to support our students who may be experiencing grief, we will be offering our own Oak View Grief Group that will be starting during the month of October. The group(s) will be co-facilitated by our school counselor and our school social worker and will be held bi-monthly for the 2025-2026 school year.
Who is eligible for the group?
· Any student who has experienced the death of a significant person in their life: parent, sibling, grandparent, friend, or anyone else with whom the student was close.
· The death could have occurred at any time – recently or years ago. (As children mature cognitively, they sometimes revisit the loss and show signs of early grief again).
If you have any questions or concerns or are interested in getting your student(s) involved in this group, please contact Ms. Peterson at PetersonK@district279.org
Warm regards,
Ms. Peterson & Ms. Hahn-Merges
