November 2024

The FACEForumNovember 2024

November is Finally Here!

There's something special about the change that November brings-- the crisper air, cooler temperatures, rain that brings a fresh cleaning to our surroundings, festivities with families and friends, and a chance to reflect on all that this year has brought and find gratefulness for all that we have. There's no denying that this school year has had its challenges, but the strength, perseverance, and resiliency that everyone has shown has been nothing short of incredible! As we reflect on all that we're grateful for, our team wants to extend a special THANK YOU to every single one of you for all that you've done, and all that you continue to do each day for our San Juan Unified students, families, and colleagues! We appreciate you!

In this month's FACE Forum newsletter, you'll find information on November workshops for families and staff, parent teacher conference resources, upcoming events, Thanksgiving food distribution information, community holiday resources for families, teacher grant opportunities, morale boosters, partnership highlights, and more!

Have a great November ahead... and please know how grateful we are for each of you and all you do to support our students, families and community!

~Your FACE Friends

Thank you all for helping to welcome these new FACEs to FACE!

November is National Native American Heritage Month!

National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It's a time to celebrate all the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities, while helping to ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. This November and every month, we celebrate the heritage and culture of these incredible Americans who deeply enrich the quality and character of our Nation.

You can learn more about this important month by visiting:

https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/American_Indian_Heritage_Month.htm

https://www.nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/

November is also National Family Engagement Month!

Happy National Family Engagement Month!

As we begin National Family Engagement month, THANK YOU to all of you for the invaluable work you do daily to support students, families, and communities. The dedication to cultivating and nurturing family engagement in your schools, classrooms and communities helps shape the future of countless students, allowing them to thrive academically and personally. Supporting and engaging families in their children's educational journey is not just beneficial, it is transformative. It builds bridges of empathy, collaboration, and relational trust that empowers all students to reach their full potential. By working hand in hand with families, we create powerful partnerships that champion the holistic development of every child.

This month, let’s renew our commitment to creating inclusive spaces where families feel welcomed, valued, and engaged. Our FACE team is here to help! Reach out to us at any time if we can help support your family and community engagement efforts. Thank you for all you do!

STAFF, STUDENT & FAMILY MORALE BOOSTER OF THE MONTH: THANK YOU CARDS!

We know that everyone is working harder than ever right now! Taking a moment to thank our colleagues, families and students for all the hard work they’re doing may be the easiest and most effective way to boost morale, show appreciation, and help fuel perseverance and positivity. We encourage you all to take a moment to reflect on ALL that you and your school/department community have amazingly done during these challenging times and hope that you'll pat yourselves on the back and show some love and appreciation to one another! To help make it even easier to do this, our FACE team will be sending a collection of Thank You cards to each school site so you always have some ready and available! THANK YOU for all that you and your teams are doing right now! We appreciate you!
Looking for a Fun November staff activity? Or something that can be modified for a classroom community building booster? We've attached a Pumpkin in My Pocket game to help bring some community cheer to your November!

2024-2025 Every Student Succeeding Award

It's time to celebrate our students! Please share this form with your staff and nominate amazing students that have persevered through adversity toward academic excellence for ACSA's Every Student Succeeding Award!

San Juan ACSA Charter is honored to have the opportunity to recognize students for their perseverance and academic excellence. We recognize the efforts that many students take to overcome obstacles, persevere in the face of adversity, and overall show their dedication to making the most of their education-- sometimes in spite of challenging circumstances. We know there are many, many students deserving of this recognition and we look forward to recognizing these students at a fun ceremony in the spring, but we need your help!

Please take a moment to nominate a student from your school who has persisted to overcome challenges and exceeded your --or even their own-- expectations. ALL NOMINATED STUDENTS WILL BE RECOGNIZED AT OUR ANNUAL SAN JUAN ACSA CHARTER ESS CEREMONY ON FEBRUARY 12, 2025. Should your student be selected to move forward to the regional level ESS competition, we will contact you for more information.

Deadline for nomination is November 22, 2024. We can accept nominations from all staff. We will also accept nominations from students!

Thank you for helping us recognize our amazing San Juan Unified students! If you have any questions or need more information about ESS, please contact Amy Rovai Gregory arovai@sanjuan.edu .

November Staff Workshop

Engaging Families of Diverse Populations (Sec. # 57050)

Wed, Nov. 6, 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. via Zoom

Participants will learn about effective strategies to create family engagement with diverse populations, such as non-English speaking families and immigrant or refugee families. Staff will learn about different cultural and systemic barriers to engagement and will learn effective tools to help remove those barriers.

Thanks for Helping Make the Fall Families Matter Conference a Huge Success!

Thank you all for your effort communicating with families and staff about our fall Families Matter Conference, "Nurturing Growth, Cultivating Community", which took place on Saturday, October 19 at Arden Middle School! The conference was a huge success with nearly 300 participants throughout the day! Families, students, staff, and community partners had a terrific time participating in a variety of academic and social-emotional workshops, learning about district and community resources available during the Community Resource Fair, and left feeling even more motivated and inspired, thanks to the engaging keynote from the Avery & Brian Experience on empowering families and partnering together to help create positive relationships with our students and families. It was a fantastic day of learning and celebrating and we can't wait to do it again in April for our FACE FamFest! Details about this fun family/educator event will be announced soon!

And the winning school for most participants in the fall Families Matter Conference is Cameron Ranch Elementary! Congratulations, Falcons! We'll be reaching out to you with details for your choice of a Family Night or Field Trip prize!

Let the San Juan Education Foundation support the dreams of your school community!

Apply today to bring a $5,000 Learning Experience Grant to your school site! Learning Experience Grants encourage student development and build community through a shared learning experience, particularly at the entire grade level or entire school site. In support of the grant's purpose to create a community-minded shared learning experience, applicants are highly encouraged to submit an application jointly with their school administrators. Grant applications focusing on equity and inclusion are highly recommended.

Volunteer Updates

  • Now is a great time to start thinking about your volunteer needs for Spring. Please encourage volunteers to sign up early so they are cleared when an opportunity arises. Volunteers can start the process here: www.sanjuan.edu/volunteer

  • Please note, if a volunteer has completed our online application (within the last three years) and has been fingerprinted with us, chances are they DO NOT need to redo the fingerprint process.

  • Volunteers that have an existing level of clearance DO NOT need to repeat the process each year.

  • Volunteer clearance levels are district wide. Although they may select your site as their primary volunteer location, they do not HAVE to list your site and if found on the Volunteer spreadsheet with clearance, they are cleared for any site.

Fingerprinting Clinics are back! Please see the flyer below to share with families.

  • Livescan results can take several weeks and up to months (if delayed). Please encourage families/ community members to complete their applications and fingerprinting as soon as possible so they can participate in Fall activities.

  • If volunteers are cleared on our spreadsheet, they DO NOT need to reprint or apply again each year. This is very important to reiterate as multiple duplicate applications slow down our system.

Remember to do your best to create opportunities for ALL cleared volunteers with various clearance levels. Please reach out to coordinator of partnerships, volunteers and field trips with any questions. Natalia.Aguirre@sanjuan.edu or 916-971-7929.

Parent Teacher Conference Resources

Effective parent-teacher conferences can boost family involvement--inside and outside of your classroom-- while helping promote positive outcomes for you, your students, and your school.

A parent-teacher conference is a great opportunity to:

  • share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, testing data, assessments, portfolios, and assignments
  • learn from parents or guardians so you can be better informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviors, and learning styles
  • discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students' learning
  • discuss issues that may be interfering with students' learning and growth

Still Have Your Site's Hopes & Dreams Banner? Pull it Out for Parent-Teacher Conferences!

Does your site still have your Hopes & Dreams banner you received from FACE last year? Parent-Teacher Conference Week is a great time to have families add to it by writing their hopes and dreams for their students. Put the banner out on a folding table with some sharpies during conference week and let families share! Then hang the banner up at your school so all staff, students and families can have a daily reminder about those hopes and dreams and how they can each make a difference in helping to accomplish those each and every day.

Thank You Card Station During Conference Week

Check out this parent-teacher conference idea! Our school staff members could use some extra thanks for all that they've been doing, so why not put a table out with thank you cards for students and families to complete when they visit the site for parent-teacher conference week? It's a great way to spread some love and gratitude within your school community!

RESOURCE HUB FOR STAFF SUPPORTING MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS

Check out our English learner and multicultural education team's resources for district staff in supporting multilingual learners. It was specifically designed for teachers, support staff and administrators who support multilingual learners. The space has resources, strategies, articles, professional learning videos and more to help newcomers and all English learners excel across content areas.

FACE Digital Resource Library

We know how challenging and time-consuming it is to search for resources for families, so our team has been building a Digital Resource Library for all sites and departments to have access to. In this library, you'll find flyers and links for district and community resources to assist with housing, clothing, food, health, special education, college and career, community service partners, and more. We'll be adding to this library regularly, so keep checking to see what's new! The link allows anyone in San Juan to view the resources, so please feel free to share the link with your site/ department team members!

Community Partnership Tip of the Month

  • You may have partners you’ve been planning holiday assistance and/or programs with. Now is a good time to start thinking about what families may need support this season. Teachers, Parent Liaisons, School Community Workers and other staff may already have a few families in mind who could use holiday assistance. Start compiling a list of families and what supports your site is offering them. Having a list ensures you are not duplicating efforts for the same family but also serves as a helpful document when partners reach out last minute with the ability to assist families for the holidays.

  • It may seem early, but now is the time to plan Spring partnerships and community events. Community partners appreciate a 60-90 day notice for participation. Booking and planning early usually ensures partners can pencil us in their calendar.

Community Resource of the Month: 2-1-1 Sacramento Community Resource of the Month: 2-1-1 Sacramento

2-1-1 Sacramento, a program of Community Link Capital Region, is a free confidential information and referral service that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 2-1-1 or visiting their website at https://www.211sacramento.org/211/

Assistance is available in multiple languages, and services are accessible to people with disabilities. Their Call Specialists speak: Spanish, Hmong, Thai, Lao, Mien and English. Over 200+ additional languages can be assisted 24 hours a day via tele-interpretation. Utilizing a comprehensive computerized database of more than 1,600 nonprofit and public agency programs, trained information and referral specialists give personalized attention to each caller. Specialists can refer callers to a variety of service that best meet their needs.

Below are links where local organizations will be submitting their Holiday Resources and Programs going on all across the Sacramento region. Many of these will include free food and gift distributions. Organizations are just starting to add information, so be sure to check the links over the next few weeks to see what's being offered this holiday season for families!

Problem Resolution Tip of the Month: Remembering We Are on the Same Team Problem Resolution Tip of the Month: Remembering We Are on the Same Team

When working with an upset and/or escalated parent, it can be difficult to remember that all parties involved are on the same team. Conflicts can create an adversarial feeling when parents become aggressive or use charged language. It is especially important to maintain your composure while listening to parents, despite inaccurate or accusatory claims they may make towards you and your staff. Remind them you both share the same goal of supporting the student’s success and the importance of their student knowing that their school and home team are unified. Many times the conflicts we are dealing with are adult issues and bringing the focus back to the student is an effective way of reminding parents that we are on the same team.

Mutual Assistance Network's Harvest Festival!

Mutual Assistance Network (MAN) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance social and economic opportunities so families can thrive. MAN works to strengthen the existing social and economic infrastructure of Del Paso Heights, Arden Arcade, and the surrounding Northern Sacramento neighborhoods. Their services include pregnancy and parenting supports, economic development, youth programs and mentoring, Black Child Legacy Campaign, workshops, community events, and more.

This past weekend, they hosted a Family Harvest Festival and invited San Juan Unified families in the Arden-Arcade area that they provide supports for. Our FACE team, along with many other community organizations, joined in to help provide additional resources and supports for families. Families had a fun time learning and playing together and really enjoyed the pumpkin patch, as well! Thank you to Mutual Assistance Network for all you do to support our students, families and communities!

Thank You to Colleagues Who Attended the "Elevating Family Engagement to Strengthen School-to-Home Partnerships" Workshop!

Thank you to all the colleagues from various sites and departments across our district who attended our "Elevating Family Engagement to Strengthen School-to-Home Partnerships" workshop! Participants learned all about ways to kickstart effective family engagement initiatives and lead powerful partnerships with families and community. It was an awesome day of learning and we can't wait to see the learning in action across those schools and departments that were represented!
