News from Candice
Dear Cougar Family,
We're celebrating a fantastic week of learning and engagement here at CME! This past weekend, I saw an article that reminded me of those classic parenting moments when asking my boys about the school day only resulted in a simple, "Fine," or "Good." Well…that was not useful!
Your child experiences so much growth and learning here, and we want to help you unlock those stories. Below is a quick synopsis of the article to give you some thoughtful conversation starters to use when your kiddos come home!
Sparking Meaningful Conversations with Your Kids
A therapist and author suggests that the key to gaining insight into your child's day is to ask more thoughtful questions that encourage reflection, growth, and mental strength. When kids reflect on their experiences, they practice skills like emotional awareness, problem-solving, and empathy. Link to article
Here are seven conversation starters recommended by the expert to help you move beyond the single-word answers:
1. "What was the best part of your day?" This encourages optimism and helps them focus on positives, which are protective factors for mental health.
2. "What's a mistake you learned from today?" This normalizes errors and helps kids see mistakes as opportunities for growth, reducing feelings of shame.
3. "Who were you proud of today?" This cultivates empathy by turning their attention to others and gives you insight into what they value.
4. "What's one thing that would have made today better?" This helps children identify feelings like frustration and naturally opens the door to problem-solving and planning.
5. "Who did you help today?" This empowers kids to engage in prosocial behavior and makes acts of kindness become second nature.
6. "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?" This emphasizes curiosity over just academic performance, fueling lifelong learning.
7. "What's something new you'd like to try?" This nudges children to look outside their comfort zone and encourages courage, emphasizing that trying is a learning experience.
A Heartfelt Veterans Day Celebration!
One of the most meaningful days of the year at CME is Veterans Day! This past Tuesday, we were honored to welcome our military family members to a special lunch to express our deep gratitude to the men and women who currently serve or have served in the U.S. Military. Our choir shared beautiful patriotic songs, and we were privileged to hear inspiring words from the Veterans who joined us. Thank you to everyone who submitted the forms highlighting the service of your family members. Our Educational Assistants beautifully displayed them throughout the school. I truly love walking the halls and seeing our students and staff taking the time to read their incredible stories.

HALLOWEEN CANDY-
Now that Halloween is over, you may have a bunch of candy left over and you are wondering what to do with it. Well, the staff at Copper Mesa would love it if you donated your extra candy to our school. We always have a bowl of candy in the office for our staff to enjoy throughout the day. And candy has a long shelf life, so it normally takes several months to get through your generosity.
KINDIE REGISTRATION -
Kindergarten registration will be open on November 3rd! If you are currently attending a DCSD preschool and your address shows that Copper Mesa is your home school, your student will automatically roll to CME for kindergarten! If you need to register a new incoming kindie, please do so on November 3rd! Students must be 5 by October 1, 2026 to enroll in kindergarten! https://www.dcsdk12.org/schools-academics/schools/kindergarten
