Superintendent's Update
February 27, 2026
Dear CCPS Families,
As we enter the final months of the school year, I am continually inspired by the dedication and talent our students display in our classrooms, on the athletic fields, and in our technical programs. This week, we have much to celebrate across the district.
First, please join me in congratulating our exceptional students from the Cecil County School of Technology (CCST) who competed in the SkillsUSA Regional Competition in Carroll County on February 21. Their hard work and technical precision were on full display. In Diesel Equipment Technology, we swept the podium with Gabriel Stollings taking home the gold medal, Darrin Huegel earning silver, and Caleb Murdorf securing the bronze. Additionally, in Advertising Design, Kylie Ameen earned the gold medal for her creative excellence. We are incredibly proud of these students for representing Cecil County so well in these high-demand fields.
Our Winter sports season is also drawing to a close, and our student-athletes have reached remarkable heights. We are proud to recognize our new State Champions in Indoor Track: Kenai Black (BMHS) for the 1600m and 3200m (1A), Bryson Foster (PHS) for the 55m Hurdles (1A), and Brooklynn Smith (EHS) for the 55m Dash (2A). In the pool, Gavin Rogers (BMHS) earned two bronze medals at the 3A/2A/1A Swimming State Championships in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke. We also celebrate the North East High School Cheer team for their impressive 3rd-place finish in the 2A division. While we congratulate all our athletes on a fantastic season, the action isn't over yet—Wrestling Regionals take place this weekend, and Basketball playoffs begin tonight. Good luck to all our competitors!
Looking ahead, we are excited to kick off the Spring sports season tomorrow, February 28. In the arts, I encourage everyone to come out and support the talented cast and crew of Frozen at Rising Sun High School. Performances are scheduled for tonight at 7:00 PM, with two shows tomorrow at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Finally, we would like to remind everyone that the third marking period interim period ended this past Thursday, February 26. We encourage all families to use this midpoint to celebrate successes and address any academic needs as we move through the rest of the quarter.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools and our students.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey A. Lawson, Ed.D.

Celebrate America’s 250th with the "Off the Beaten Path" Challenge!
In celebration of the United States’ Semiquincentennial in 2026, the Historical Society of Cecil County invites you to join the "Off the Beaten Path" challenge, a county-wide adventure designed to uncover our local hidden treasures. In collaboration with local preservationists and government officials, the Society has curated a list of 27 historically significant sites—from well-known landmarks to tucked-away gems—to honor our nation's 250th anniversary. To participate, simply pick up a passport at any Cecil County Library branch, the Historical Society, Cecil County Tourism, or the Fair Hill Nature Center. Participants are encouraged to visit these sites and take a selfie at each location or marker as proof of their journey. Before heading out, adventurers are encouraged to check each site’s website for hours and potential entry fees, though all locations have been vetted for safe roadside pull-over areas.
This challenge is a fantastic way for families to engage with local heritage, featuring a special category for younger explorers; children under 14 who complete 14 visits will earn a Junior Historian Certificate and a gift. Completed passports and photo evidence must be submitted to the Historical Society at 135 East Main St., Elkton, by December 1, 2026, to be eligible for a prize. Submissions are accepted on Mondays and Thursdays from 10–4 and the first Saturday of every month from 10–2. Supported by local partners, including Cecil County Tourism and the Public Library, this event promises a year of discovery and community pride.
