The Weekly Bulli-tin
Term 3 Week 4
Principal's Report
The Wonderful Culture at Bulli High School
Last week was a busy week at Bulli High School — although, for our staff and students, that is certainly nothing unusual!
Students were involved in a wide range of experiences beyond the classroom, including the ski trip, Duke of Edinburgh hike, sporting competitions, excursions and other activities. These opportunities provide our students with valuable experiences to learn, challenge themselves, develop independence and create lasting memories.
What makes these opportunities possible is the extraordinary goodwill of our teachers. When staff are away accompanying students, there is no additional provision to cover their classes. Instead, colleagues willingly step up to take additional classes, teaching beyond their own regular load, so these opportunities can continue.
This is a wonderful reflection of the culture at Bulli High School. Our teachers support one another, put students first and consistently go above and beyond to create opportunities for our young people.
A sincere thank you to all of our staff for the generosity, teamwork and commitment you show every day. It is this culture that makes Bulli High School such a special place for our students.
2027 Captaincy Speeches
Congratulations to our 13 outstanding Year 11 nominees who delivered their speeches for the 2027 Captaincy this week.
We were incredibly impressed by the quality of the applicants and the thought, confidence and commitment they demonstrated. It is wonderful to see so many students willing to step forward and put themselves forward for leadership.
To all 13 nominees, congratulations on reaching this stage. It takes courage to stand before your peers and share your vision for the year ahead.
The results will be announced next week. In the meantime, we wish all nominees the very best and thank them for their willingness to contribute to our school community.
Completion of HSC Trial Examinations
Well done to our Year 12 students on completing their HSC Trial examinations.
The Trials are not simply about the marks students receive. The real value is in what they do with those marks and the feedback that comes with them. I encourage students to take the time to review their results, identify areas for improvement and use their teachers’ feedback to strengthen their preparation for the HSC examinations.
For some students, there are also HSC major projects and other important tasks to complete. Good organisation and time management will be particularly important as they balance these commitments with their ongoing preparation.
With only six official weeks of schooling remaining, there is also much to look forward to, with some significant Year 12 events ahead. I encourage our students to attend, participate, learn, celebrate and enjoy every moment. Be present — these are weeks and experiences they will not get back.
Thank you to our parents and carers for your continued support and encouragement during this important time. Together, we can help our students make the most of these final weeks of their school journey.
Learning Snapshots
Over the past few weeks, I have been spending time in our Year 7 and 8 classrooms, observing learning and speaking with students about their experiences.
I have seen many excellent examples of explicit instruction, purposeful questioning, effective modelling, checking for understanding and the use of graphic organisers. Teachers are also making learning relevant and deliberately connecting new learning to previous lessons.
Just as importantly, students have shared how much they value the care, encouragement and commitment their teachers show towards them and their learning. They spoke positively about teachers who know them, support them and want them to succeed.
Students also identified a desire for more brain breaks, group work and collaboration, greater use of their devices for learning, more opportunities to be challenged, and greater choice and voice in their learning.
These observations and conversations provide some valuable areas for us to consider as a school. We can build on the strong practice already evident in our classrooms while continuing to explore ways to increase student engagement, collaboration, challenge and agency.
I look forward to continuing to visit classrooms and listen to our students as we work together to strengthen learning across the school.
Drawn Together – A Celebration of Creativity and Connection
We are delighted to invite families to celebrate an exciting creative collaboration between Stanwell Park Public School and Bulli High School.
Drawn Together brings together the work of Stanwell Park Public School Kindergarten students and Bulli High School Year 10 Visual Design students. Working in pairs, students have created collaborative artworks as part of an exchange exploring how ideas can develop across different ages and experiences.
What makes this project particularly special is that the students have created their work together without ever having met. On Friday 21 August, the Kindergarten and Year 10 students will finally come together at Clifton School of Arts to meet their creative partners and view their completed artworks.
We warmly invite parents and members of our school community to attend the adults-only opening on Friday evening and celebrate the creativity and achievements of our students. The exhibition will then be open to the general public across Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August.
A special thank you to Year 10 Visual Design teacher Amanda Bowen and Shay O’Day, Principal of Stanwell Park Public School, for bringing this wonderful collaboration to life.
We would also like to thank our Hospitality teachers, Loren Pischedda and Amber Haines, who will be preparing a beautiful grazing table for guests at the opening. Their contribution adds another special touch to what promises to be a wonderful evening.
Proudly sponsored by Clifton School of Arts, Drawn Together is a wonderful example of how community partnerships can create meaningful opportunities for young artists and strengthen connections between our schools.
We look forward to celebrating this special collaboration with our school community.
P&C Meeting
Our P&C meeting scheduled for this week was postponed until next Wednesday at 6.00pm.
I hope to see many of you there and look forward to a productive evening together.

Principal

Year 11 VET Work Placement
This term, our Year 11 Preliminary VET Hospitality and Construction students are heading out into the workplace during Weeks 5 and 6 to complete their mandatory work placements.
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to put their developing skills and knowledge into practice, gain valuable industry experience, and experience what it is really like to work in their chosen industry.
We wish all of our students the very best for their placements — work hard, make the most of every opportunity, and most importantly, enjoy the experience!
Health Care Careers Day
The Regional Industry Education Partnerships Program (RIEP), in collaboration with TAFE NSW Shellharbour, held its annual Health Careers Day for our local High School students.
Students participated in four hands-on workshops across Allied Health & Fitness, Nursing, Community Services, and Aged Care & Disabilities. They also had the opportunity to hear from industry professionals about VET pathways, training options, and rewarding careers within the health sector.
This event is growing and offers valuable insights into Australia's fastest-growing industry, inspiring the next generation of health professionals.
ITEC Readiness Day
14 students from Years 9 and 10 participated in a 3-day, Micro-build program at ITEC, Coniston in Term 2 which was one of the many initiatives funded and implemented by the Regional Industry Educational Partnerships (RIEP) program .
This program was a significant improvement from previous years as students were able to construct a mini house frame incorporating kitchen cabinetry, sink fit-out, power point installation, skills used from carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and tiling trades. Students obtained a more genuine experience of constructing a house and what is involved.
Students were fantastic with their collaborative efforts and supporting each other in giving everything a go. There was a wide range of prior skills demonstrated by students, which allowed for leadership opportunities to emerge as two teams were established, primarily Year 9 vs Year 10, and the more inexperienced students were quick to pick up new skills through their observations from both trainer and peers.
Students were introduced to an industry representative from the Australian Cabinet and Furniture Association (ACFA) to learn about pathways in cabinet-making, furniture, joinery and design. Students were invited to reach out to arrange for Work Experience opportunities in these fields to progress to Apprenticeships or even SBATs.
What goes up, must come down – students were quick to pull-down and clean up the project area on the third day so they could then progress to learn about Scaffolding. There are lots of opportunities across the Illawarra for casual, on-going employment in this field with further training.
The three day program served to confirm established career pathway ideas for some and introduced the industry to others, either way – all students benefited and would encourage future students to apply in 2027.
Renewable Energy Careers Program
Fourteen students from across Illawarra schools had the opportunity to explore the growing renewable energy sector through a range of hands-on activities, industry visits and career discussions.
Ben Whithouse and Tom Draper attended from Bulli High School.
A special thank you to TAFE NSW for hosting the first two days, where students learnt about solar, wind, hydro and energy storage technologies, working on an Energy Ready Kit, and heard from Tania at Green Gravity about emerging opportunities in the industry.
Thank you also to Thurgate Electrical, TLE and Wise Energy for providing students with valuable industry insights and hands-on experiences during Day 3.
The students absolutely loved the day and, of course, the goody bags, even wearing the T-shirts on day 4!
Finally, thank you to the University of Wollongong's Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC) for hosting the final day and showcasing the innovative work being undertaken in sustainable energy.
A special mention to Amelie, a second-year Electrical Engineering student, for sharing her educational journey and inspiring students to consider future pathways into the industry.
Programs like this are only possible because of the ongoing support and collaboration between schools, industry, and training providers.
Their willingness to engage with students and share their knowledge helps build awareness of the exciting career opportunities available in the renewable energy sector.
In addition to this, this was one of many initiatives made possible by the Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP) team – Neil Bessant and Jenny Watts.
UOW Discovery Day
On 11/06/2026 our school attended the UOW Year 10 Discovery Day where students did taster sessions of the courses that UOW offers.
They had many different courses on offer such as nursing, exercise/nutrition science, education, visual arts, performing arts, law and criminology as well as many others!
Here are some standout moments from the sessions that the students participated in at our day on campus:
Ellie Hay- At the UOW l chose the Nutrition/Exercise Science and Nursing group, I didn’t expect to like the nursing taster sessions. But, after the session my perspective had changed about nursing.
l found out that you do not need to excel in maths to do nursing which was quite interesting for me as maths is not my strongest subject.
I really liked the supervisor we had as she made University not sound as daunting even though we only have two more years left of school.
In the Nutrition/Exercise Science and Nursing sessions we were lucky to do lots of practicals.
We learnt about all the new equipment that they are bringing into hospitals to make moving patients easier for the nurses so that they do not get ‘nurses back’.
One of the fun things we did was the glitter bug experiment.
We put special cream on our hands and turned off the lights.
We used a uv light to see if our hands glittered with germs (luckily for me my hands were pretty clean!).
The final practical we got to try was to use a special torch to see if the pupils dilated when the light went over the naked eye, if the pupils dilated it meant that the brain was working well.
Did you know that the stethoscope is the dirtiest item in a hospital?
In the Nutrition/Exercise Science taster session we learnt about carbohydrates, vegetables and athlete diets. In the carbohydrate experiment four of the students in my group had to get their blood pricked to see the level of carbohydrates in the system.
They had an option of dates, sports gel, water and glucose drink.
The best rate of absorption was the glucose drink which Ivy had meaning she had the best carb absorption out of everyone.
Our last tester was a veggie test to see how good your diet is.
The way they do this is to read your blood with a uv light scanner.
The UOW worked with the Manly Sea Eagles and their veggie test was 315.
When l did my veggie test l was very surprised when l got 400 which was on par with many professional athletes.
We found out that the UOW Exercise Science and Nutrition work with Alex Volkanovski (Two time UFC Featherweight champion), Tottenham Hotspur FC and St George Illawarra Dragons to better their performance in their sport.
All this information has really helped me narrow down my career choices and subject selection pathways.
l really enjoyed the UOW as the options for food were great (Zambrero, Subway and many shops and cafes) the outdoor areas are also really nice to sit around and relax during breaks.
After the UOW Discovery day l have a goal to work towards as it is definitely a University l would like to go to.

Enrichment
Inspiring Excellence
We were honoured to be invited to Scarborough Public School careers expo to provide cooking demonstrations and hands on experience to help shape students’ aspirations and help guide their future pathways.
Thank you to Ms Pischedda, Mrs Angus and our Year 10 helpers.
The cake didn’t just look amazing, it tasted just as good.
Year 7 Enrichment Day: Nan Tien Temple
Year 7 enjoyed a wonderful day of enrichment, visiting Nan Tien Temple as part of their HSIE and PDHPE learning! Students took part in a guided tour of Australia's largest Buddhist temple, exploring Buddhist beliefs, culture and practices, followed by hands-on experiences including Tai Chi and Calligraphy, and a delicious vegetarian lunch at the temple.
The day concluded with a mindfulness sand sculpting activity on the beach, where students reflected on and creatively represented what they had learnt at the temple.
A brilliant example of connecting classroom learning to real-world cultural and personal wellbeing experiences!
Seacliff CoS HPGE Art day
What a brilliant start to our second Bulli High School Masterclass with the HPGE Arts Masterclass getting underway yesterday.
Students in Years 4 and 5 from across our amazing Seacliff CoS took part in the first of 3 days of intensive Arts sessions.
A huge thank you needs to go to Ms Bowen who is one of our superstar CAPA teachers.
She engaged and challenged this wonderful group of young artists who ended up producing some fantastic work.
A big thank you also needs to go to our CoS for their enthusiasm and constant support. We look forward to Day 2 next Wednesday.
Keep an eye on our social media for more exciting HPGE opportunities and events throughout the remainder of the year.
Indi, Benji and Alfie from Coledale Public School came to Bulli High School to participate in the HPGE Intensive Arts Masterclass.

BHS Annual Ski Trip
Students from Year 9 PASS and Year 11 SLR and HMS braved the overnight bus trip to spend three fantastic days at the snow.
Whether they chose to ski or snowboard, students headed out for lessons each morning before enjoying some structured free time to explore the runs. The conditions couldn't have been better!
Day 1 treated everyone to fresh snow falling throughout the day, creating perfect conditions and plenty of excitement on the slopes.
Day 2 brought beautiful sunshine, with students making the most of the bluebird conditions— fine-tuning their skiing and snowboarding skills, sharing lots of laughs and creating memories they'll never forget.
Day 3 didn't disappoint it was another perfect day on the slopes to end the trip! What an unforgettable few days on the slopes!
It was wonderful to see students challenge themselves, persevere while learning new skills and encourage one another.
A huge thank you to Mr Schafer for the incredible work involved in organising such a successful trip.
Thank you also to Miss Gibbs, Mrs Merola, Miss McIntosh, Mr Wilkinson and Mr Newman for giving up their time to support our students and help make the experience so enjoyable.
HSIE
Year 11 Ancient History: Bog Bodies Mystery Box Activity
Year 11 Ancient History students recently completed a "Mystery Box" investigation into the bog bodies of Northern Europe.
Each student researched an individual bog body, drawing on primary and secondary sources, before building a mystery box containing sources, images, replica artefacts and a full autopsy report, designed to let classmates investigate the life and death of the deceased.
The activity gave students hands-on experience working with historical evidence and interpreting archaeological findings, before the class voted on the best mystery box, with the winning entry now on display in the Wilko Museum.
Pictures of a selection of the boxes are attached.
Sport
15s Boys Basketball
Congratulations to our 15s Boys Basketballers for taking out the Northern Illawarra Zone Championship.
Our A team stormed through pool play with wins against Woonona (70-33), Keira (76-47) & Corrimal (85-21) before edging out a star studded WHSPA unit with a dramatic 1 point win!
Despite opening up an early double digit lead, WHSPA clawed it back with some nuclear hot shooting from Formosa & Woods with WHSPA claiming the lead with only minutes to play. Some outstanding defensive reads & hustle plays led to a clutch steal & breakaway bucket for Matty 'The Chef' Drinks Water to seal the game.
For our A team, Quinn was enormous at both ends all day & Chase Long was strong on the boards & bigs. Mitch 'The Fountain Mountain' was super effective around the bucket & Henry (on BHS debut) was a beast around the ring at both ends.
Felix was silky smooth with his moves & drew constant oohs & aahs from the crowd, but the biggest crowd pleasers were definitely Heff & Stampy who mixed it up with the big dawgs, with Stampy nailing a huge 3 & Heff just dropping bucket after bucket in every game.
2 Way Trey was outstanding defensively & drove at well on his way to plenty of buckets.
Carter S brought super energy off the bench & Matty D lived up to his 'Chef' nickname as he served up dishes on a platter for his team mates.
Our B team battled bravely featuring FIVE of our Year 7 ballers with Jagger, Xavi, Oscar, Kai & Alex commendably contesting with Year 10, 9 & 8 opposition, whilst MJ led the team from the point, Beau brought the blocks & boards & Manu showed some class with his attacks on the rack.
Ibby 'The Glove' led the steal count & was menacing on D & Callum policed the paint & was pin point on passing, as well as cashing one of his tradmark triples.
All in all it was a wonderful day of bball & we couldn't do it without the support crew of scoretable officials, media crew & of course our parents too. So sincerest thank yous to all & we'll do it all again in 2 weeks when we head off to the South Coast Regionals in Bomaderry.
Coach Delay
Bulli Ballers
Three of our Bulli Ballers capped off an incredible weekend by winning the BNSW Under 16 State Cup in Bathurst, finishing undefeated at the championships & defeating the Sydney Comets to be crowned State Champions!
Chase, Trey and Quinn were outstanding all weekend, with Chase coming up with a crucial rebound in the clutch, Quinn showing nerves of steel at the free-throw line to seal it & Trey putting on a masterclass all weekend, splitting the bigs all game with his quick first step and fearless drives to the basket whilst taking out the tournament MVP honours.
The boys will be back on court for BHS at the South Coast Regionals in less than 2 weeks.
Great job boys. We're super proud of your efforts.
Year 9/10 OzTag
Our Year 9/10 OzTag teams participated in the Sutherland Shire Regional tournament, with both teams progressing through to their respective Grand Finals before falling short to strong Endeavour Sports High teams.
The students performed exceptionally well, in arguably the strongest regional division, and both teams have now progressed to the NSW State OzTag championships in a few weeks time. Congratulations on your efforts today and good luck in a few weeks time.
