A Message from Mrs. Galullo & Mrs. Austin

Dear Torringford Families,

As we prepare to take a short break from school for Thanksgiving, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who makes it possible for our students to come to school every day, on time, and ready to learn.

We thank:

  • Our students and families for making daily attendance a priority. The habit of good attendance will help our students do well in the classroom.
  • Our wonderful teachers who pour their energy into making each classroom an exciting place for exploration and knowledge so children do not want to miss out on learning
  • Our support staff and PTO volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need and love.

We appreciate each one of you very much.

Torringford School will be closed on November 24th, 25th, and 26th for the Thanksgiving Recess and reopens on Monday, November 29th.

Please make every effort to avoid taking extra days off during the Thanksgiving recess. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and leave your child behind in school.

Thankfully,

Mrs. Galullo & Mrs. Austin

Coming Soon - PJ Day for the Kids

PJ Day for the Kids

December 10th

PJ Day for the Kids kicks off its 11th year with a mission to not only raise money, but to honor the brave kids fighting cancer at Connecticut Children’s Hospital.

Join us as students and businesses across Connecticut and Massachusetts wear their PJs to school.

Torringford Honors Our Veterans

Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served in our military. It is important for our students to know the meaning of Veterans Day and to recognize that it is a day to remember those men and women who fought to preserve our freedom.

Torringford School will honor our Veterans on Thursday, November 11 and will participate in a flag planting ceremony and a drive through parade. At this time we will give thanks for our country and the special individuals who have enabled us to thrive in our free nation – our Veterans. As you pass by Torringford’s Field of Flags, please join us by honoring our veterans for their dedication and loyal service to our country.

In the patriotic spirit of Veterans Day students and staff are encouraged to wear something red, white, and blue. If your student participates in any scouting program, please encourage your child to wear his or her uniform top.

News from Mrs. Heneghan in the Library Media Center

Reading is Fun...and so are Book Fairs!

A huge THANK YOU to our amazing Torringford families, teachers, and PTO for supporting our fall book fair! I am thrilled to announce that we reached $12,000 in sales (surpassing our goal of $10,000!), translating into nearly $3,000 raised for the purchase of new books and student materials for our library media center.

We are so grateful to our awesome Torringford community for making this one of the MOST successful book fairs in school history; we truly couldn’t have done this without the support of every single one of you!

Memorizing is a great brain exercise. We practiced memorizing the children’s song, Los Pollitos Dicen.

Hear us singing in Spanish. It is about a mother hen feeding her little chicks and keeping them warm.

Readers Workshop

Kindergarten readers learned how to label pictures in their books to name the important parts. They also learned they can label actions and feelings. They used the labels to help reread the books.

Look What's Happening in Grade 1

First graders worked very hard this past month finishing up their “How-To” procedural writing books, teaching us about all different things that they know how to do very well! Some of these included how to play soccer, how to make a pizza, and how to brush your teeth!

In reading, we’re learning how to become “word detectives” by looking for clues and using strategies to help us figure out hard words (using parts of a word, syllables, etc) just like real detectives! We are also continuing to build our reading stamina.

First grade has also been continuing to grow our classroom community by playing collaboratively together and by practicing being safe, respectful and responsible.

Pictured below are Mrs. Lefevre’s class and Mrs. Campbell’s class on our storybook character day!

Mrs. Campbell's class has been writing books teaching others how to do something in steps. Our culminating activity was carving a pumpkin together and writing a how to book to match the steps. When the unit was complete, we shared our favorite writing with the class to celebrate our success!

Look What's Happening in Grade 2

Second Grade has been busy!

It has been a wonderful month where our students have been able to do many things that we have been missing like working together!

zoom_out_map

In our classes we visit math Work Place stations, collaborate while counting Jack’s magic beans into the hundreds, use our Fundations boards to build words, and sort animals into different categories based on their characteristics in science.

Our second graders are knowledgeable, inquisitive, thoughtful, and excited about so many things. We can’t wait to see what the next month brings us!

Look What's Happening in Grade 3

In math, third grade has been working with rounding 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100. For example: 754 would be rounded to 750 (nearest 10) and 800 (nearest 100). We have also been working on solving 2- and 3-digit subtraction problems using a number line.

One of the latest math work places that the students have been introduced to is called, "Round & Add Hundreds." Students, with a partner, spin two spinners & create 3-digit numbers from what they've spun. Once they have created two 3-digit numbers, they add them together. On the other side of their record sheet, they round both of the numbers that they created to find the estimate. For example: 567 + 214 = 781 AND (rounded to the nearest 100) 600 + 200 = 800.

In the pictures that follow, you can see students from Mrs. Hollenbeck's class playing the game.

LOOKING Closer with Mrs. Tedesco

Students in Ms. Tedesco's class read LOOK CLOSER, which encourages everyone to look closer at nature and the things around us.

After reading, students went on a nature scavenger hunt. They collected many different leaves, plants, and sticks. Then the children sorted, observed, compared and discussed the items.

As a final project, the students created nature collages to celebrate the fall season. It was a fun learning project which helped to enrich our reading, writing, math and language skills!

Maybe you and your family can have your own nature scavenger hunt!!
