SCMS Counselor Newsletter

In August, the counselors began meeting with students individually and providing classroom lessons.

We have been meeting with students through their Flex classes to review Bullying Prevention lessons.

We are also planning a field trip to IUS for 8th grade students! The 8th grade will be going on two days: Orange team on September 8th, Blue team on September 12th. The permission slip is due by September 3rd. Proceeds will support the SCMS Dragon Pride Incentives for students.

There are many color options including tie-dye, short sleeve, long sleeve, sweatshirts, and more!

• College GO Week: September 22-26, Spirit Wear Week! See below for the theme days.
• Pop the Culture presenting Life Skills Education classes with 7th grade students. The lessons will help students in making choices to stop (or not start) the use of tobacco and vaping products along with navigating social and social media situations. This will start during quarter two.
• Family Ark will start a small counseling group for students. This will be starting quarter two as well.
• Indiana University Southeast will be presenting Career Exploration lessons with students. They will present lessons throughout the school year to 6th and 8th grade students. This started Monday, August 25th.
• 8th Grade will be participating in JA Inspire Career Fair on October 29th. Permission slips to come.

Students will be taking the ILearn Checkpoints test throughout the school year. The first Checkpoint exam for students on English and Math will be the last week of September before Fall Break. Students began practice exams to explore the format on August 25th.

We're several weeks into the school year now. Students have access to assignments in Schoology. Parents can log in with their student to view the classroom assignments, study guides, keys, etc. for each class. In Infinite Campus parents can download the Infinite Campus app and receive real-time updates on grades as well as view missing assignments.

It's so important to complete assignments on time and to catch up quickly if absent in order to maintain strong grades and athletic eligibility.

Students who qualified for Free or Reduced Lunch and Breakfast, may see their eligibility end at the end of August (first month of school is a roll-over from previous year). Please re-apply for this school year.

SC School Corporation also has a Food Pantry and it is open Thursday afternoons at the High School, Door 29 (across from the SCSC Administration Building), for all families enrolled in a SC school.

SCMS also participates in the weekend food bag program for students. Please contact your counselor if this weekend program is needed.

Be sure to check your email daily for the most up to date news and announcements. Students and parents will receive a daily email from the SCMS Office of announcements Monday-Friday.

Counselors will share a newsletter each month highlighting upcoming events, reminders, and updates.
