Hello Lower School families,

I'm excited to be starting my third year at Brimmer! This month, my primary focus has been on library orientation activities (book care, call number identification, etc.) with all grades. My goal is to help our students navigate not only the Brimmer library, but also the public library.

My other focus has been preparing for the author visit that happened last Thursday! Elyse Seltzer (the Middle/Upper School librarian) and I have been planning to bring local author/illustrator Raúl the Third to our school since last spring. He came just in time to kick off Latinx Heritage Month.

New and returning families, please take a look at our monthly reading challenge information below! All students are welcome to participate. Families can fill out a paper form (available in the Lower School Library) or record their child's reading via this link.

Here's to a great year!

A bit about me

  • I grew up in Indiana, but have also lived in Canada, Germany and Spain.
  • I have been a librarian since 2011.
  • My favorite part of being a librarian is seeing the joy on a student's face when they find a book that they love.
  • Besides reading, I enjoy singing, walking in nature and spending time with my family.
  • My favorite genres are historical fiction and fantasy.

Raúl the Third visit (September 17)

Elyse Seltzer (the Middle/Upper School Librarian) and I were excited to host author/illustrator Raúl the Third last Thursday! He is a New York Times bestselling author and three-time Pura Belpré award winner. In addition to spending time with our middle schoolers, Raúl gave two presentations to the Lower School (PK-Grade 1 and Grades 2-5). From showing his many drawing notebooks to describing what it was like to grow up between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Raúl connected with each age group with humor and enthusiasm.

Currently reading

One of the new books in our library is called Limelight: Curtain Up on Poetry Comics! Renée M. LaTulippe's inventive poems are written from the perspective of the script ("Dear actors, advice: be perfect, precise!"), a seat ("The orchestra is tuning, my excitement is ballooning"), and more. Children will enjoy Chuck Gonzales' vibrant comic book illustrations and the different types of poems (which are explained in the back in the book).
