Roland Hayes School
Dear Roland Hayes School Community: Welcome Back!
August 20, 2025
The start of the school year is always exciting—and this year is no different! Whether you’ve been part of our community for years or are just joining us, we can’t wait to begin. We know the learning, challenges, and opportunities ahead will help your children grow their minds, bodies, and hearts.
Our North Star reminds us that “when children and teachers feel engaged, safe, and supported, we have room to grow and learn through collaboration and risk-taking.” To bring that to life, we commit to knowing each child deeply—their interests, joys, fears, and areas for growth—so we can support and challenge them in the right ways.
As educators, we continually reflect: What impact is my teaching having? What does high-quality learning look like today? How do we ensure fairness in assessment? How can we remove barriers so everyone can fully participate in our community? We take this work seriously, and we value our partnership with you to help your child grow into their best, most authentic self.
Here’s to a joyful and inspiring year ahead!
K-5 Class Placements Are Available Now
K - 5 Families: You can now head to the Parent Portal, log in, and learn which classroom your child has been assigned to for the new school year. Here is a “cheat sheet” on how to see the class section your child has been placed in for this upcoming school year: Parent Cheat Sheet for Portal-v2.pdf
If you need help accessing the Parent Portal, please reach out to psb-data-team@psbma.org
6-8 Schedules: Currently you can see your child’s class sections, but hour-by-hour schedules are not available yet. Those will be ready very soon. You will receive an announcement when the 6-8 schedules are available.
How Do We Create Our Classes?
We take the process of building class lists very seriously and commit to a process that is fair for all children. Our staff puts a great deal of time and attention into ensuring that all students are positioned for a successful year ahead. The process takes time, thought, and considerable energy to ensure that we create well-balanced groups of children who can work together both academically and socially. In order to accomplish this, we solicit input from many staff members who know each student in a variety of settings. Each spring we also ask each family to share with us, as they are willing and able, any factors that help their child be successful.
Please note:
Class placement decisions are final. Any decisions to make changes to class placement will be needs-based, in collaboration with individual families, and at the discretion of the Principal.

Rules Regarding Personal Electronic Devices
The Public Schools of Brookline (PSB) strives to create a positive learning environment where students can focus on their academic and social development. This policy describes guidelines for the management and use of personal electronic devices by students at school.
A personal electronic device (PED) is a wireless and/or portable piece of technology that is capable of storing, processing, or transmitting information. These devices include, but are not limited to, smart phones and watches, laptops, tablets, earbuds, headphones, and audio-visual recording devices, such as cameras.
Grades K-8
PSB will follow an “Off and Away” approach wherein all PEDs are locked and stored for the duration of the school day. The school day is defined as the beginning of the school day until the end of the school day, including all classes, specials, homeroom, lunch, recess, and transitions. The school day also includes school assemblies and field trips.
Exceptions to this approach will be made for (a) students whose IEP or 504 plan requires the use of PEDs; (b) students who have received documented permission from a teacher for use of a PED in the teacher’s classroom for educational purposes; and (c) the use of Chromebooks and Google Apps for Education.
Schools may implement an “Off and Away” approach in the manner of their choosing. This may include the use of locked pouches or other storage devices for PEDs, or the requirement that students store their PEDs in lockers or backpacks. PSB is not responsible for damaged PEDs.
If a child needs to contact their parent/caregiver or other adults during the day, they must report to their school’s main office to do so. Illustrative Consequences
- First offense: The PED will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day. The PED will be held by the classroom teacher (K-5) or turned into the main office (6-8). The PED will be returned to the student at the end of the day or to their parent(s)/caregiver(s) upon request. Teachers (K-5) or the office (6-8) will document the infraction to the student’s parent(s)/caregiver(s).
- Second offense: The PED will be confiscated for the remainder of the school day. The main office will document the infraction to the student’s parent(s)/caregiver(s). The PED will be returned to the parent(s)/caregiver(s) at the designated pick-up time. A meeting may be arranged between the teacher, student, and parent(s)/caregiver(s) to discuss responsible PED use.
- Third offense: The student will drop off the PED at the main office at the beginning of each day and collect it at the end of each day for at least one month OR a parent/caregiver will sign an agreement that the student will keep their PED(s) at home. A meeting will be arranged between the principal, student, and parent(s)/caregiver(s) to discuss further consequences, which may include after-school detention or other disciplinary actions.
The entire policy can be found here:
ICE: Emergency Planning Guide for Parents & Guardians
There may be those of you in our beloved community who are deeply concerned about the ICE detentions across the United States and here in Massachusetts. Here, from the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General, is the guidance and fact sheet to help parents plan ahead for who will care for their children in the event they are detained by ICE or other emergency: Fact Sheet for Parents with Uncertain Immigration Status and Guide for Parents with Uncertain Immigration Status.
There are translations of the following languages: Haitian Creole, Spanish, Portuguese, and Simplified Chinese. The English versions are also attached for convenience. You can find them at this link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Hu2L9OOM-ue9ix9MoJqkihg-Th7Icfjb?usp=sharing
Welcoming you all back to school means welcoming EVERYONE back to school. We know that some of you are worried, scared, and uncertain – we may not have the answers you seek, but can help make sure your children feel safe at school.
In Closing
I do hope that you have had a wonderful summer break!
Starting a new school year can be a mixed bag of emotions – some excitement, some dread, a lot of nervousness ... BIG feelings, for sure! Once the big day arrives, everyone ends to settle down quickly into the routine of school, reorienting to all the good stuff happening here.
As the big day approaches, if your child needs some extra support managing these big feelings do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to make sure very kid has a great start.
Until then, enjoy the last 13 days of summer break!
~ Asa
Our Land Acknowledgement
This parcel of land that our school sits upon is a special and sacred place.
Before this place was a Town, before our school was here, before this neighborhood was called “The Settlement” or “Chestnut Hill,” and before this land was a farm, this land was held by the Massachusett, the people Indigenous to this place. The Massachusett were the caretakers of this site, living full lives, raising families, and burying their dead right here. We recognize and honor this history, and seek to create thoughtful land stewards and citizens for generations to come.
As a public school, our primary objective is to ensure access, membership, and participation of all community members in our care; with this land acknowledgment we state our willingness to work towards that vision where all feel a true and abiding sense of belonging.
